About the Hair.
Men become bald ! Why ? Because they
wear yjose hats and caps. Women aro never
bald. Sometime, from long continued head
ache, heat in tho scalp, bad hair-dressing
nnd some other causes women may havo baro
spots hero and there; but with all those
cau-ps combined, you never see a woman
with a bare, shiny, bald head. And you
never see a man lose; a hair below whero the
hat touches his skull. It will take it off
clean as you can shave it down exactly to that
line, but never a hair below, not if ho has
been bald fifty years. Tho common black
stiff hat, as impervious as sheet iron, retains
heat and perspiration. Tho little hair
glands, which bear the samo relation to tho
hair that tho seed wheat does to tho plant
above the ground, become too weak to sus
tain the hair. It falls out and baldness ex
ists. A fur cap wo have known to produce
complete baldness in a single winter.
A man with a good head of hair needs
very littlo protection when tho hair grows.
Women who livo much within doors, and
who aro therefore peculiarly susceptible to
tho cold, oil their hair and plaster it down
hard and flat upon their skulls, so as to de
stroy nine-tenths of its power as a non-conductor,
havo worn for years postage-stamps
of bonnets stuck on tho back of their skulls
and then going out of furnace-heated par
lors, havo ridden for hours in a very low
temperature without taking cold aud without
complaint.
Man, with his great vigor nnd habits of
out-door life, and with his hair not plastered
down, but thrown up looses and light, can no
doubt go to the north pole, so far as that part
of his person is concerned, without any arti
ficial covering. And yet we men can wear
immensely thick fur cans, and what amounts
to sheet iron hats, anil do not daro step out
in a chilly atmosphere a moment lest we
taio cold.. It is silly, weak and really a se
rious error. The Creator knew what ho was
about when he covered a man's skull with
hair. It was a very important function in
protecting tho brain. Baldness is a serious
misfortune. It will never occur to any man
who will wear such n hat as we do-a com
mon black high silk hat. with five hundred
holes through tho top, so that thero will be
more hole than hat. Tins costs nothing;
tho hatter will do that for you when you pur
chase your hat. If thenap bocombedbacktho

ob icrve thd peculiarity. The hat will wear
quite as long, tho hatters say considerably
longer, because it is dry instead ofmoUt ; in
brief, thero is not a single objection to it,

vent much headache.
