A 1'alry Story,
Llttlo Clam Sholdon lived with her
father nnd mother In n protty cottago
on tno bauks of tho Hudson. They
had a beautiful Howcr-garden In front
of tho house, flllod with nil kinds of
flowers, such ns violets, tulips, rosos,
etc ; and every morning Clnrn would
got up with tho sun nnd gather a llttlo
bouquet, fresh with sparkling dow, to
glvo to her father to carry to town
with him, for ho had to goto Now York
to attend to his business.
Ono beautiful morning whllo gath
ering tho bouquot, sho ospled a largo
wblto rose, all covered with llttlo
diamond llko drops of dow. With
an exclamation of delight sho haslon
cd toward It to pluck It, but Just ns
her hand touched tho stem, a tiny
voice, which seemed to ooino from tho
roso, said :
"I'loaso don't!"
Clara looked down, and s.iw stand
ing on tho roso tho smallest being Im
aginable, who continued :
"Pleaso don't pluck this roso It Is
my bod I"
"Your bod 1" said Clara surpris
ed. "Who aro you, beautiful llttlo
thing ?
"I am a fairy,'' ropIioJ tho llttlo
thing, "and my namo Is Fragranco
and my grandmother, Mab,quconof tho
fairies, Is angry with mo, and has ban
ished mo from tho fairy land : but I
cannot llvo hero. I must tako ono look
at my dear homo, although my grand
mother said If I over carao back sho
would kill mo."
"Why, what a wicked fairy sho must
be!" said Clara.
Tho llttlo fairy only sighed, and,
shaking out her pair of wings,
sailed away, and was soon out of
sight.
Clara went on gathorlng her flowers,
when, thinking tho dew-drops would
mako beautiful jowols, sho took from
her pocket a vial to sccuro thorn In ;
just then sho happened to glanco up
ward, and saw tho llttlo fairy hurrying
toward her, ciiascd by a largo bluo fly.
As soon as tho tiny thing was near it
cried :
"Tho fly is my wicked grandmothor
going to kill mo."
Willi those words sho leu on a rose,
lmntinir for breath.
Clara hold up tho vial to ward olf tho
fly, but it was coming so swiftly that it
never heeded it, and so llow right into
it. Clara clapped in tho cork, and held
it fast.
"What shall I do with this wicked
old fly I" sho asked tho fairy, as soon as
tho llttlo thing had somewhat recover
ed from its frieht.
"Keep It fast in tho vial," was tho
answor, "and do not let it out till It
promises to be good."
So sho placed it in her room, nnd went
to her breakfast.
Tho next morning buo saw In golden
letters on tho vial theso words :
"I will bo good, always good, if you
will let mo out?"
So sho ran again to tho little fairy
and asked hor what to do, and tho an
swer was:
"hot her out. A fairy never broke
her word." So sho went and opened
tho vial, and out flew tho fly, alight
ing on tho window still. It rubbed it
wings witli its hind foot, and immedia
tely becsmo a beautiful fairy, and
then, In a sweet volco thus addressed
her:
"llccauso you havo kept mo from
ovil doing In my anger; and havo been
kind to my daughter, I givo you virtue,
happiness and long life. May you be
tho moans of reforming mortals, as you
havo mo ; and may your happiness ex
ceed that of tho fairies 1"
Sho then flew to her granddaughter
and after Fragranco had thanked Clara,
they flew off to fairyland. And Clara
was happy, for who aro not when they
havo mado others so ?.
One Worm Did It. One day I was
walking with somo friends through
Sudbrook Park in Surrey, when Dr
Ellis drew our nttention to a largo syea
moro treo, decayed to tho core.
"That flno tree." said ho. "was killed
by a single worm."
In answer to our Inquiries, wo found
that about two years previously tho
treo was as healthy as any in tho park,
when a wood worm, about threo Inches
long, was observed to bo forcing its way
under the bark of tho trunk. It then
caught tho eyo of a naturalist who was
staying hero, and ho remarked, "Let
tho worm alone, and it will kill tho
treo." This seemed improbable ; but It
was agreed that tho black-headed worm
ahoulinot bo disturbed.
Aftor a tlmo it was discovered that
tho worm-had tunnelled its way a con
siderable distanco under tho bark,
Tho next summer tho leaves of tho
treo dropped off very early, and in tho
succeeding year it was a dead, rotten
thing, and tho nolo mado by tho worm
might ho seen In tho very heart of tho
oncu noblo trunk.
"Abl" said ono who was present, "let
us leqrn a lesson from that single treo.

A Beautiful Incident. A poor
Arab traveling In tho desert mot with
a Bprlng of cloar, tweet, sparkling wa

wells, such water as this appeared to
his slraplo mind worthy of a monarch
and filling his leathern bottlo from tho
spring, ho determined to go and present
It to,tho caliph hlmsolf!
Tho poor man traveled a long way
boforo ho readied tho preseneo of his
sovereign and laid his liumblo offering
at his feet. The caliph did not desplso
tho llttlo gift, brought to him with so
much troublo. Ho ordored somo of tho
water to bo poured Into a cup, drank it,
and thanking tho Arab with a smllo,
ordered blm to bo prosonied with u To
ward. Tho courtiers around pressed
forward, eager to tasto of tho wonder
ful water; but to tho surprlso of all, tho
caliph forbado them to touch a slnglo
drop.
After tho poor Arab had quitted tho
royal prosonco with a light and Joyful
heart, tho caliph turned to his courtiers,
aud thus explained his conduct : "Dur
ing the travels of tho Arab," said ho,
"tho water In his leathern bottlo be
camo Impure and distasteful. But It
was an offering of love, tmd aa such I
havo received It with pleasuro. But I
well know that had I sufTorod anothe
topartako of it, ho would not have
concealed his disgust ; and therefore I
forbado you to touch tho draught, lest j
I
tno neart or tno poor man should havo
noen wounded."
