ner nioiiier in imt iircatno very angry
with her because of lirr laziness, and
losing nil p itloiice, gavo her stteli a good
boxing ns routed her toery aloud, .lust
at this moment the queen was passing,
and hearing tho girl's screams, slopped
her carriage and went into tho liouso to
eco what was tho eauso of tho disturb
ance. Tho queen asked tho mother
why sho punished tho girl so sovcrely
as to mako her cries reach tho street.
Tho woman being ash'ainedlosay what
a lazy child sho had, repllod, "I wish
totakoaway her distaff; bIio would
spin forever, and in my poverty I
am unablo to furnish her with
ilnx."
Tho queen replied : "Tho dWtoff 1) a

daughter go to my palaeo ; I h avo a
quantity ofilax, sho may thine spin at
her pleas.iro." Tlio mother gladly con
'sentcd, and tho queen curled tho young
gift off lnxhor carriage'. When they ar
rived at tho placo tho girl was shown
ilnlo llirco chambnrs, which wero lllled
from tlio floor to tho coiling with tho
Wst beautiful il.tx. "3pltt mo all this
Iflnx," said tho queen, "and when it Is
finished I shall givo you in marriago to
;ny eldest son. Do not worry yourself
about your poverty ; your zeal
for work will bo dowry sufll
clent." j Tho girl said nothing, but was tilled
vlth consternation, for if sho worked
ifor threo hundred yean without rest
ing, from morning until night, sho
Iwould not bo nblo to reach tho bottom
of this enormous pllo of ihx. When
nlono sho began to weep, and contin
tied to do so for threo days and threo
nights without touching iter work. The
third day tho queen coining to sco hor
was astonished to find that no work had
been dono. Tho young girl excused
herself on account of grief at leaving
hor mothor, and tho queen was bbliged
to bo contented with this answer ; but
on leaving, said to her: "Seo to It
that you begin to-morrow to
work."
When tlio young girl was onco moro
alone, sho did not know what to do.
In her trouble sho walked to tho win
ilow and saw coming towards her llirco
women. Tho first ono had an immenso
Hat foot ; tho second, such u tremend
ously largo lower lip that it hung over
and quito covered her chin ; and tho
third, a thumb largo and flat. They
stopped before tho window, and look
Ing into tho window asked tho young
girl what sho would llko to havo. Sho
told them her trouble, and they offered
lo aid heron "condition that sho would
invito them to tho nuptials, call them
her comlns without being ashamed of
them, and givo them scats nt tho table
promiso tills and wo will go to work on
tho flax and it will soon bo spun."
''With all my heart," replied sho ; como
Jn and begin quick. ".Sho brought In tho
threo singular looking women, and
cleared a placo for them in tho flrst room
to work in. Tho flrst woman spun tho
flax and turned tho wheel, tho second
wet tho flax, and tho third twisted it
holding it on tho tablo with her thumb.
At each stroke of tho thumb sho drop
ped on.tho floor a skein of tho finest
thread.
Every timo tho queen eamo in tho
girl hid tho women, and showed tho
work that wa3 dono, tho queen was al
ways filled with admiration. When
tho flrst chamber was finished they
passed to tho second, and then tho third,
which wa3 well finished also. The
threo sisters then prepared to leave,
saying to her. "Do not forget
your promiso, you shall nover bo sorry
for it."
When tho young girl had shown to
tho queen tho empty chambers and tho
spun thread.sho fixed a day for tho wed
ding. Tho prlnco was delighted to
have a wlfo so eompotent and Indus
trious, and ho was filled with lovo to
ward her. ' "I havo threo cousins,"
said she, "who liavo been very good to
mo, and whom I would not neglect in
my good fortune ; allow mo to invito
them to ray wedding and to scat them
at our tablo." Tho, queen and prince
mado no objections. Tho day or tho
feast tho threo woman arrived in mag
nificent equipages. Tho brldo said
to them ; "Dear cousins, I am glad to
welcome you." Thoprinco whispered
her;, "You havo very ugly relations !"
Then addressing himself to tho ono
witii tho largo foot ho asked, "How
eamo your foot so largo?" "It was
mado so by turning tho spinning
Wheel," replied sho. To tho second ho
said, "whero did you got such a hang
ing lip?" "By wetting tho flax," sho
answered. To tlio third ho saW, "Ilow
eamo your thumb so largo ?' "Twist
lug flux," sho replied. Tlio prince,
frightened at this prospect declared that
his bride should never again touch spin
dlo orstail'. Thus was tho young girl
relioved from tho occupation which sho
most disliked.
