Hon on tho advantago of good stock
which prevails among well to do fann

Inrorined and wideawake. I have bred
cattlo nnd srazed' them, though, In
breeding, I never i;ot 89 far along as lo
make n spcclalJiUMiicss of raising thor
oughbreds to others Tor breeding pur
poses. But when it comes to a matter
or cattle for beef, I think I know my
business, and what I nm talking about.
When I was gracing T would glvo

I e uld lit them fur market earlier, bo-
cai-o I could put moro pounds of beof
to an aero or p.iV.urnge, tnnd beeauso
I could always mil It fir nnro per

iow, as u cattlo buyer, I will glvo
in ro for tho same class of stock, than I
will lor couimo:: stock, beeauso I can
cHvaya find n ready market for It, and
nulla -i tho be3t prlces,and because thero
Is less risk in It. When tho market Is
overstocked; when buyers from tho
East aro few, and holding o(f, prices
drooping and drovcra blue, I notlco It
is always tho inferior and common stock
which feels tho depression most, and to
tho greatest extent, I havo often notic
ed, that when I had several lol3 of good
common beoves in tho market, I had
to accept a very marked concession in
tho prices, In order lo sccuro a custo
raer, while around a lot of high grades
in an adjoining pen, tho buyers would
swarm in troops, each ouo oagor nnd
anxious to buy at full rates. And when
prices havo drejiped, I havo noticed
that a cent on common stock was not
fallowed by moro than half a cent on
high grades, and when prices advance,
tho best slock always feels tho advauco
tho earllost. For this reason, I prefer to
liandlo this kind of stock to common
slock, and always expect to pay moro
per pound for it, and can mako money
by doing it. It is with this, as with
every thing else, thero is always a strong
healthy demand, moro buyers Ihan sel
lers, for a choico articlo than for cora
uion one, nnd tho farmer will mako tho
most monoy who endeavors to supply
tho beat.
Auother thing I havo noticed, and I
havo handled n great m'nny cattlo, and
that is, that high grades becomo good
raalurb beeves, nndcan command full
prices in market at an earlier ago, than
common bullocks, and when I was run
ning a farm, I considered this a great
advantage. Thero Is no question about"
their maturing earlier, about their fat
tening moro readily, and about their
selling for n higher price.
Feeding Tuujceys. Tho Poultry
nrorld, in an article on turkeys, has
this in relation to feeding :
"Tho practice of most farmers who
ralso turkeys is not to feed them at al1
aftar tho young birds aro six or eight
weeks old. They aro driven ofT to tho
pasture or woods early In tho morning,
and get their living whero they can
find it. Their chief food is grasshop
pers and other Insects, and thoy do the
I azures and meadows a great servico
in k cpiug under theso destructivo

whero Inscct3 and mast aro plenty, but
ur"n many farms tho rango of wood
I ml is exceedingly limited, and tho
U j-fth of the birds will not bo satis

T.ify should come to tho roost every

of four or tlvo pounds in tho weight of
tho birds at Thanksgiving. Turkeys

Tlio Song-thrushes had company,
their Undo nnd Aunt Ollvcbnck from
tho north, had called expressly to In

Join their party.
"Of course, wo will," said Mrs. Song
thrush decidedly, and Hint peltlcd tho
matter.

In a great twitter of prcprratlon, l'apa
Songlhrush nnd tho young sons, Tom
nnd Dick wero each arrayed in their
fine, ted coats, Immaculato whlto shirt
bosniin, and black ties waving Mf nat
tily to tho right and left. Mrs. Song.
IhriHli'ssult of dark, rich, brown, was
quietly elegant, and giving tho whole
or her mind to It, sho milled It daintily
horc, and shook it out there. Hut her
husband, hopptng quietly nvny
perched hhn-cir mournfully on tho
edge of their doscttod neat.
"Wo havo boon so happy hero," ho
murmured, bru3hlng'away a tear with
his claw.
"That wo have, dear," chirped his
wlfo cheerily ; sho had Just arranged
tho last feather to her satisfaction nnd
that of Aunt Ollvoback, who pronoun
ced her costumo perfect. "That wo
have, dear ; but thoro'd another sum
uicr coming, you know, and wo shall
return.''
"Hut why go away at all?" piped in
young Tom, tho early bird of tho faml
ly, who, with his mouth full of
some delicious lll-blt, was enjoying
himself,
"For two reasong, tuyson," answorod
mamma Song-thrinh, mnjcstlcally
"First, beeauso everybody that Is any
body, goes north In tho summer and
south in the winter. Second, beeauso
life here, niter a Uttlo while, would bo
really il road fill. It all looks very pleas-
now, with tho bright sunlight and tho
gay leaves, but tho cold, last night
gavo mo a chUl. and that's nothing to

Meadow-lark says, and sho ought to
know, for sho foolishly wintered over
hero ono season, that with tho baro
trees, and snow nnd Ico, and only
crumb now and thon, Its terriblo I"
Just as Mrs. Song-thrush concluded
theso remarks in a serious tone, thero
was a sound as of mufilod thnndcr, an d
in nu instant the sky abovo their holds
was darkened suddenly, as a crowd of
pigeons, numbering thousands, flow
swiftly by. Tho donso mass presented
a mo3t beautiful appearance now
glistening azuro field, when their back
woro in vlow, and by n sudden simul
taneous change, a canopy of rich, dark
purple.
"What au army!" cried Dick Song
thrush.
"True," nnswered his mother, "but
wo shall bo much moro select. "
All at onco tho pigooni roso high i
tho air, nnd wheeling and twisting,
darted forward with Increased velocity-
"A hawk! a. hawk is after them !"
cried Tom Song-tbrush,but tho immed
iate arrival of over sixty or tho lookcd-
rbr cousins, put overythlng clso out of
mind.
"How do you do 1 and how do you
do 1 twit, twit, twee," sounded tlio
thrushes, big and little, as thoy pressed
forward eagerly.
'Good byo ! good byo I good byo 1"
called out tho Waxwings, bobolinks
and Chip-birds, who had como from
swamp and thickets to bid their old
friends adieu.
"Wo shall soon join you in tho sunny
south-land, hut till then, onco moro,
good byo."
"Au revoir," chlrpod Mrs. Song-
thrush airily, as wltk a graceful
motion sho rose to join tho travelers.
Ileluctantly followed her, masters
Tom and Dick, each with -a grapo
plucked from a neighboring wild vine,
and thon uftor Aunt and Unclo Olive-
back bringing up tlio rear, caino tho
papa Thrush, but in mid air ho poised
himself, and turning, gazed onco again
at tho desolate homo nc3t, when sud
denly ids swelling heart rouud vent in
a wondrou3, sweet and fluto-llko song.
Out rang tho strains llko a martial fife,
then gently, tenderly melted into a
low cadence, which lingered a brier
moment, In tho autumn sunshlno, then
wa3 gono. This was tho father bird's
farowcll to his own dear home.
"Takomy place," urged tho patri
arch Thrush who led tho van ; but tho
modest Song-thrush retired to tho rear
where ho could keep nn eyo ou tho an
tics of Tom and Dick. And so on they
went, every blrd'ln eagermotion.
Now and then, through tho day,
thero wero fresh uecotslons to tho
company, whllo tho?o in tho rear wero
constantly flying over tho heads of
those in front, moving In this manner
to glvo all an equal chnnco for their
luncheon of insects and grain. Toward
ovenlng, dcsccnd(ng nearer and nearer
lo earth, they sought tho wclcomo
shelter or tho woods and gro -o, whero
with head tucked coshy under wing
thoy rchtcd secure.
Thus, moving southward by short
flights and dolayed Journeys, lingering
now and then pcrhRps wholo days in n
eocludcd gralnfleld, erosslnir broad
rivers, which far bolow seemed a inero
ribbon of silver, flying high above
mountains and carcrnlly avoiding tho
haunts or man, tho travelers approach
ed tho smiling land or flowers, whoso
rich odors already floated them n greet
ing on the south wind. Hut though
even now tho air was scented with the
perfumo or magnolia blooms nnd orango
blossoms, noyer should papa Song
thrush sco theso flowers ugaln.or rovUlt
his northern homo; for ono morning
when flying low, n cruel bullet sped in
among tho flock nnd wounded him.
Painfully ho toiled on for n moment,
then Ids wings fluttered, drooped ; ho
could not seo Tom and Dick ; n lllm
was over his eyes, and with ono heart
broken trill ho roll, poor llttlo follow,
dead. Tho birds all grlovcd for him,
but their only safety was In flight, and
with tho rost woro swept onward thoso
who loved him best, tho mamma Song
thrush, Tom and Dick. At last.
"Tho rlco flolda roachtug wide wero seen.
Aloug tho borders of tho tea,"
and tarrying momentarily among birds
of splendid plumago and graceful flight
they told, in ono united burst of inolo
dy, tho story of their aerial passage
Thon, though fruits and berries tempt-H
cu them to remain, tho Thrush all
hastened to tho loved seclusion or tho
cypress swamps or murmuring stream
let, overshadowed by lofty vino-gar
land trees.
