Kditok CoiiUMWAN : This is a per
ilous and tremendous time. It Is no
time for education. It in now necessary
to Instruct tho peoplo in tho languago
of truth. Everv patriot and lover of
justice1 should remember that it is his
duty to dispel tho darkness nnd dolu
pion that onvplopoour nation and dis
play in its full and genuine color tlio
deploiable situation in which we, as a
people aro placed.
The timo lias been when our nation
could havo stood against tho world,
when tho fumo of our prosperity was
wafted to tho remotest parts of tho
earth nnd earned even our motherland
to assume a penitential attitttdo nnd
Inip'nro us lo stay our majestic powor.
Now nono so poor to do us reverence.
Spain hrs Jnulted us, by suing our
vessels upon tho high sea. Mexicu lias
caught tho signal of our Indisposition
anil assumes tlio power to make our
border hazardous to life and property,
and even Cuba, sought to buillo us by
anchoring her war vessel on" our coast.
Is it possiblo for a nntiou (o withstand
n moro bumilinting disgrace '.' And yet
daro we resent their transgressions, or
assuming that wo havo tho power to
sustain our national honor, havo wo
men al tho helm who cherish tho lovo
of our country and whoso hearts yearn
for tho preservation of our national in
tegrity and glorious liberty, achieved
by tho blood or our Illustrious fore-fathers.
Plainly can wo discern tyranny in
their unscrupulous deeds, and yet wo
are called upon lo acknowledge their
ovil workings as being in conformity
with our Ideas of purely honest and
patriotic men. Oh, cruel times when
