ad. COIi. BTEWAUT'S AFFIDAVIT.
Gen. Couch novor gavo Stownrt nny
such orders ns ho alleges and ho can
neither produco a copy, nor will Couch
corroborate him. There never was a
piece of artillery on the Fishingcrcek ditr
ing the tear, the sign of an cnbankmcnl,
nor an organized body of armed mon,
nor was thero a scintilla of ovldcnco be-
furo tho Court Martial to provo It. Tho
mon arrested wore not drafted mon nor
had thoy resisted tho draft.
Tho editor of tho Shenandoah Herald

politically) siys :
So it is with tho charge of fathering
tho "Fishing Creole Confederacy" which
is cast upon thostatcsman likoHliouldors
of
nut'KAr.uw.
Yet wo know this chargo is false, for
wo weru on tho spot nnd took part In
tho celebrated campaign to crush it.
Well do wo rcmoinber tho heroic chargo
wo made on tho supposed battlements
cf tho confederates after a fortnight's
preparation, reconnoltorlng, scouting
and picketing nnd qulto vivid Is tho
picture still in our minds of tho disgust
ed countenances of tlio ono thousand
braves as thov reached tho summit of
tho mount whoro wo wero tuught to bo
liovo tho Fishing Creek army was
massed and which lor ono long month
wo had regarded with awo and expect
ancy, and found not n man, nor tho
meanest ovidenco that a man had over
boon thoro. Such was our oxtromo dis-
nnnoiutment that oursolourn in Colum
bia county was shortened uono too soon
and but a fow days elapsed before not a
soldier was to bo seon wnoro for six
weeks all had been bustlo, and activity.
Tho Government was beautifully fooled
by a fow pooplo who wanted to seo tho
soldiers. In a word, Impartial reader, let
us inform you, that such a thing as a
confederacy to resist tho U. S. Govern
ment nover oxistca in uoiumma coun
ty, that tho trouble that oxlsted thoro
during that interesting porlod of tlmo
wnen tno uraic was so sovoro, amount
ed to nothing moro than what existed
In this and other counties of tho Stato,
and that was tho desertion of a fow mon
that had been drafted and their refusal
to anncar when summoned in defenco
of tiiefr country. No opon resistance,
no organization is opposition to tho fed
eral authorities, nothing but tho net of
a fow men who lied to oscapo being for
ced into tho army and this is tho his
tory of tho "Fishing Creek Confeder
acy." r
Aud yet no portion of Stownrt's am-
davit implicates Mr. Uuckalow! Ho
heard through scouts that Mr. U. had
addressed tho Kantz meeting, and on
thatrumor"senl a detachment to arrest
him. "As Mr .Uuckalow never concealed
hlmsolf nnd no arrest was over made,
It is fair to presume that Stewart dis
covered his information to bo falso. If
,truo it could easily havo boon proven.
And now a word a3 to Col. Stowart.
Wo will not go into his disgraceful
army record but glvo a fow facts In our
knowledge. At a tlmo when every
bravo soldier able to fight was at tho
front aud when thoy wero badly need
