The Value of Pumpkins. Last
year I raised twenty ox-loads of pump
kins with corn from nu acre. The cart
would hold forty bushels of potatoes.
I consider them a valuablo feed for
stock, taking Into consideration how
cheaply thoy can bo raised. I under
took to dry lamyapplodry-housosomo

per pound. I found that a green pump
kin, welghlug from fifteen to twenty
pounds, would mako about ono pound
of well-drcssod dry pumpkin, and that
It would pay bolter to dry thom for
hogs (as it could bo dono very cheap)
than It would to sell.
I soaked tho dry pumpkin in milk

tho barn, says tho Agriculturist, wo
should bo In no hurry to thresh. It Is
not probable that wheat will rulo per
manently low during tho noxt .twelve
months than at tho present time. We
do not say that it will be higher. Wo
are tot urging farmers to hold on to
their grain, but simply not to bo In a
hurry to thresh, unless there is somo
oljret to bo gained. Wheat keeps far
butter in tho straw than In tho granary,
and it is far better not to thresh until
tho fctraw or grain is needed. But
whero grain has to bo stacked, and
whero tlintchlng Is not practiced, It is
better to thresh as early as possible.

"If a cow In chewing her cud throws

I do not see whoro tho advantage Is in

The testimony of all tho agricultural

Is to afford to tho growing plant more

is to provide dralnago whon tho soil is

Christine' Dreams,
1IY OtjYDK.
Poor little Christine, shu was so tired.
All ilnj long, sho and her brother Franz
had wandered up and down tho hot and
dusty streets of tho great city ; nnd no
ono had heeded their wistful faces ; no
nnohnd listened to their childish voices.
Now nnd then souv kind hearted moth
er had stroked Chrlsllno'd sunny curls,
nnd pnld, "Tho child has n pretty
face," but not ono penny gladdoncd
their llltlo hearts.
That evening,, as thoy walked sor
rowfully along tho country road that
lo d to their c ittngo homo, Franz said :
How sweetly tho blrdj aro singing,
Christine!"
"O, Franz, well may tho happy birds
bo singing, for thoy havo all been fed,
while wo poor birds havo sung tho
wholo day long nnd havo no bread,"
and tho loug pent-up tears flowed down
Chrlstlno's cheeks Ukornln.
"Do not bo sorrowful," llltloonc, said
her mother, ns sho bent over her low,
whlto bed for n good-night kiss.
"Do not bo sorrowful, llttlo ono," tho
winds seemed to repeat, as thoy rustled
softly through tho troos that sheltered
tho cottngo roof.
All tho voices of tho night seemed to
tako It up, ns thoy floated in nt tho at
tic window, with n low, sweet melody.
And tho melody moro than tho words,
comforted Christlno ; for no matter how
sad her iieart might bo, tho slightest
breath of music could always touch It
to gladness, so passionately did tho
child lovo tho beautiful spirit that was
to crown tier llfo with richest bless
lugs.
It was a loVcly summer night, and
tno evening star, rising over tho pur
plo hills, shono down through tho attic
window llko n calm, sweet face. As
Christlno gazed with wonder nt tho star,
sho remembered her mother had onco
said that nil tho stars wero worlds ; and
sho thought that tills star must bo n
very beautiful world, It looked so largo
nnd bright. "If that whito cloud wero
only a boat," sho said to herself, "that
would carry mo over tho bluo sky to
tho star I"
Strango to say, Jti3t as tho curly head
began to rest very wearily on tho dim
pled hand, and tho eyelids to droop
very heavily over tho bluo eyes, Chris
tlno saw tho snowy cloud floating to
wards her window.
As it drow nearer, and nearer, sho
saw It was shaped llko a boat, and that
It was guided by a beautiful being, so
beautiful that Christine felt suro It
must be a Dream.
As tho cloud boat touchod tho win
dow, tho Dream floated in nnd stood by
tholittlobed.
"Poor child, you nro tired," murmur
ed the Dream, wrapping a soft, whito
mantle of sleep around Christino j nnd
thou n feelingof rest and poacofell over
tho child, llko a charm.
Tenderly tho Dream lifted her into
tho waiting boat and thoy floated away
from tho dark, shadowed earth.
"Oh, this Is splendid I" crioj Chris
tine, as a breezo sprang up nnd boro
them swiftly nlong, whllo tho earth
below vanished into a speck and thon
disappeared.
"Whero shall wo go ? nsked tho
Dream.
"I would llko to go to tho Evoninc
Star," replied Christlno. "Is it very
far nwny ?"
"Oh, no, wo will soon reach tho
Evening Star."
As tho Dream spoke, Christlno saw
that thoy woro approaching a beautiful
land, which shono llko a silver island
In tho bluo sea of tho sky.
"Thi3 is tho star whero Music holds
her court," continued tho Dream, "at
tended by all Sweot Molodios, who
loam of hor their beautiful mission on
earth, for Melodies, llko miuistcrlnp;
angels, nro over singing with tho joy
ous, sighing with tho sad-hearted, and
telling earth's children of n higher hap
pier llfo."
"Does Music over lovo poor llttlo chil
dren?'' nsked Christine with a sigh.
"Music loves all who lovo her." repli
ed tho Dream. "Even tho poor may
havo their lives mado groat and beauti
ful It thoy lovo Music."
"I am so glad I" exclaimed Christine,
"for I lovo Music dearly."
"Ghrlstluo, havo you over notlcod a
strango stillness falling over tho world
nt tho twilight hour?" asked tho
Dream.
"I havo noticed it often," said Chris,
tlno. "Tell me, dear Dream, why is
H?"
"I havo heard," s.ld tho Dream,
speaking softly lost tho breezo should
hear, "that this Is tho hour when tho
winds lovo to steal uway to this stnr,
and practico togother their grand har
monics j nnd hero, too, tho breezes chnt
over tholr morning nnd evening hymns.
It has boon whlspored among tho trees
that tho lark loams, in this star, his
most charming carols, for ho is often
seen to drop down from tho sky in tho
morning. Somo babbling brook has
said that oven rain drops tuno their
crystal bolls in Music's court."
"O, Inm so glad wo aro going therol"
and Christino could say no moro for
wonder, as thoy neared tho shore.
It was not strango that this star had
always shono with such a silvery light,
for it was a silver world. Silver moun
tains, silver valleys, sllvor rocks,
streams nnd trees gave tho land n
strango unearthly beauty; for tho star
was different from tho glory of tho
earth.
Christino wondered still more, ns sho
wandorod with tho beautiful Dream
over tho fair Holds, and by tho clear
streams, whoso waters rlpplod musically
over sllvor sands, and under trees
whoso silver leaves wero stirred with
twinkling murmurs. Tho flowers of
this land wero very lovely, but all puro
whito, ns though thoy had gtown nnd
bloomed In moonlight.
Most wonderful of nil ,tho flowors, tho
streams, tho trees, had volcos which
mingled togother In low, sweot carols
as thoy passed by. Even tho birds In
tho trees above, warbled out their Joy.
ous thoughts In word.
Now all theso things filled llttlo Chrls
tlno's heart with gladness as she longed
to return In tho rloud-hoat, nnd bring
her father and mother and llttlo Franz
to tills lovely land whoro thoy could all
bo happy together.
Hut boforo Christlno could utter this
wish sho heard n f-ir-off murmur as of
mnuy volcos, and tho Dream cried Joy
fully, "lt- l Music comes, nttonded by
all sweot Melodies."
