stated, has broken out In various parts
of tho city and a number of deaths have

agreoablo, and great caro should bo ex

scarlet fever of many of its terrors by
proscribing for tho patient warm
Icmonado with a Uttlo mucilage, its
often as desired, and tho application
of warmth to tho stomach. Ho directs
that a cloth bo wrung out of hot water
and laid on tho stomach, renewing it ns
it cools. With this treatment, ho
guarantees that not o.no out of n hun
dred cases will provo fatal.
We learn from reliable sources that
tho Board of Directors of tho N. &, W.
B. It. Tt. have unanimously approved
of tho location of their road, mado up
on tho ground, by their engineers,
under tho direction of tho Executive
Committee of tho Board. And whllo
there tiro other claims sot up to a por
tion of tho route, tho engineers found
no traco of any survey or pretenso of
location within tho county of Colum
bia, or anywlicro west of Littlo Wap-
wallopen creek. The immediate con
struction ol this road, and its branches,
will advanco tho prosperity of this
wholo region.
We earnestly hope that our sugges
tion, of a fow weeks since, looking to
tho formation of Democratic Clubs
throughout tho county may not bo over
looked. Thero was never a timo when
they wero moro needed than now or
when they would bo moro likely to do
good. It would not bo necessary to
hold frequent meetings at this early
mo in tho year, onco in a month or
fortnight would perhaps bo sufllclent :
but it is very desirablo that tho Clul3
should bo organized nnd ready to work
actively when tho campaign fairly
opens. A few energetic and earnest
men in eacli township could bring about
tho result. Tho fall olcctions aro of so
important a character that every means
should bo taken to ensure an increased
majority in tho county.

It is tt fact not as generally known as
it should bo, that the onion Is rcmarka
bio for its nutritious tjualitie?. Accord
ing to analysis, tho dried onion root
contains from 25 to !10 per cent, of
gluten. In this respect it ranks with
tho nutritious pea, Tho onion Is to tho
Spaniard and Portugueso what cheeso
is to tho English laborer; it helps to sus
tain his strength, and adds largely to
tho nourishment which his simplo meal

doubt that the goncral health of our

We understand that tho Rev. John
Howltt has been elected Principal of tho
Bloomsburg Literary Instltuto and Stato
Normal School.
Mr. Barklcy, lalo Principal, accepted
tho position at tho earnest solicitation
of tho Board of Trustees and of Mr.
Wlckersham ; and with tho understand
ing that ho was to bo relieved as soon
as a permanent arrangement to supply
his placo could bo made. A Justly com

There is as much connection bo
tweon tho words and tho thoughts as
thero Is between tho thoughts and ac
tions. The latter is not only tho ex
pression of tho former, but they havo a
powor to react upon tho 'soul, and leavo
tho stain of corruption there. A young
man who'allo ws himself to ttso ono vul
gar or profano word, has not only
shown that thero Is a foul spot on his
mind, but by tho utterauco of that spot
ho lullames it, till, by Indulgence, it
will pollute, and ruin tho soul. Bo
careful of your words and of your
thoughts. If yo.u can control your
tonguo so that no Improper words aro
pronounced by It, you will soon be able
to coutrol tho mind, mid savo it from
corruption. You extinguish tho flro by
smothering it, or by preventing bad
thoughts from bursting into words.
Never utter a word anywhero which
you would bo ashamed to speak in the
presence of tho mo3t refined lady, or
tho most religious man. Try this prae

have command of yourself.

Very few people are good letter wri
ters. It is remarkable, considering tho
impottancoof tho subject, that so littlo
attention is paid to what should boa
portion of every thorough education.
In business letters, tho wrong usoof
words may convey an Idea utterly at
variance with .tho writer's intention,
nnd causo pecuniary loss to himself or
to others. Tho requirements of a good
business letter aro fow; brevity, and
comprehensiveness aro all that aio ne
cessary. To express tho meaning fully
In tho fewest posslblo words should bo
tho aim, and yot how very many letters
do neither tho ono nor tho other. A
long straggling cpistlo badly worded
and obscuro in senso is invariably pro
ductive of irritation on tho part of tho
recipient and frequently leads to an
answering loiter for moro dellnlto in
formation. Inferior letters aro not con
fined to tho uneducated aud dull ; many
men who talk smoothly and express
themselves clearly enough in words
utterly fall to do so with their pens.
