In Shcolitiu'H family weroroducod to tho
verge of destitution, and Mrs. Sheohan
became uncommonly bitter.
Just at this crisis, Mr. S. D. Cohvoll,
uonorai rrelgnt Agent of tho Erlo rail,
road, at Dunkirk, chnnno.il
Hliccilian In tho streets of that town nnd
nccosU'd him, with
"Will, Thomas, how aro tho grap

"Yes," was tho nimu-nr. "Ihn unn

"Tlinnv 'om away," advised Mr. Col

"I havo ouo almost done," said

Back to his hiimblo homo wont tho
invoutor, with new hopo, In his breast,
and set himself to finish tho grapplo
with all duo speed. But, upon what
slender threads do tho fortunes of men
dopend I A tap, tho only ono our In
ventor had of tho b!zo required sudden
ly ennppo 1 nsunder, nnd, as It was cs
sontlal to tho progress of tho work, ho
must havo n now ono or ho could not
go on.
In his straight, ho applied to his wifo
to lend him twenty-ftvo cents to buy
tho necessary steel to forgo tho tap. But
sho having no faith In tho grapple, re
fused, for two verv trood reasons first.
that sho beliovcd tho money would bo
thrown away if sho gavo It to her hus
band; andsecond, that sho had not tho
money 10 givo nim.ovon If so disposed.
Tho rofusal was seasoned with soma
very hot splco that made It very unpal
ntnblo to Thomas. But ho bothought
him of a merchant who, In brighter
days had seen tho color of his money,
and who, perhaps, would now give him
credit for tho small modicum of steel
ho required for tho tap.
To this merchant to prefer his request,
ho began beating about tho bush ; and
finally straying into politics, hot words
pasjed botween them, and our friend,
feeling his manliness would suffer too
keenly by asking credit for tho steel,
camo away without It.
With no dcfinlto purposo ho went
aomo, pondering upon how ho should
surmount tins, now no trifling obstacle
and camo away without it.
He found his wlfo making lyo for soft
Buaji, om nor aciuuy m no way neutral
Ized by tho alkaline reaction. Dosnnml
ent and discouraged, ho sat down, in no
very enviablo mood, when ho chanced
to spy a piece of iron laying near tho
mos at wnicn his spouso was working.
Meditating upon how ho could mako
that plecoof iron hard enough Tor a tap,
led him to a rather rudo experiment,
tho results of which havo In tho end
mado him a richer man than hoover
dreamed of being.
It so happened that from a distant rcl
atlvo, a Roman Catholic nrlrst In Trr
land, our friend had inherited qulto a
library of works on chemistry somo of
mem raro anu vaiuaoio. llo had read
somo of these books to a verv eood imr.
poso. "Thero Is surely carbon in that
ye,- uiougnt no. "If I only couldget
that into this iron in tho proper propor
tion, I should havostcei, and from that
"y inp, and so llnisn my grapplo."
With littlo hopo or faith that ho
should succeed, ho took somo of tho lye,
and adding, without any particular rea
son for so doing, somo saltpetre nnd
common salt.mado a pasto with this
solution nnd a hard grudged 6aucerful
of tlio llttlo remaining flour there was In
tho house. Ho then Ibrgctl tho tap, nnd
enveloped It In tho paste, put tho wholo
Into n luted Iron-box nnd oxposed it to
heat for two hours in blacksmith's fire.
To his Joy nnd surprise when ho took it
out, It was hard enough to cut cast steel.
Tho grapplo was finished, nnd forty dol
lars flowed into tho family treasury of
Thomas Shechan. Ho went back tolila
old work disgusted with patents, nnd
resolved novcr to havo anything to do
with ono again. But tho remembrance
of the tap, hardened in so unlquo a
manner, still haunted him. Having a
great deal of caso hardening to do, ho
thought ono day ho would repeat tho
experiment, upon n largo scale, which
ho did with perfect success.
For twelve months ho wont on to ex.
perlmentipurchasing tho materials with
his own monoy, and worked In secret
by night and at odd hours. At tho end
of twelve months ho reconsidered his
sentenco of condemnation on patonts,
and applied for ono on hlsprocoss which
was granted September 1, 1SG0, tho
claim being for a combination of dam
aged flour, potash lyo, or lyelroin hard
wood-ashes, nltro.common salt, and sul
phate of zinc, for case-hardening Iron.
In 1807 ho patented an Improvoraonton
tbo above-named process. In 1SGS ho
took out another patent on nn entirely
now process, which consists in tho uso
of raw limestone, charcoal, black- nvliln
of manganese, sal soda, common salt
ana pulverized rosin combined, for con
verting Iron Into stool, which Is now
wldoly used, nnd from which ho has
reapod qulto a fortune.
No less than twenty-thrcoof tho lead
ing railways in America now uso this
process,uuderllccnsofrom tho patentee,
jornaruoning too units, guides, pins,
and nuts of locomotives, effecting, wo
aro told, no less a saving than from five
to six hundred dollars annually on each
locomotivo,ln obviating tho lost motion
consequent upon tho wear of links,
guides and pins.
Tho Inventor has already recolved for
licenses under his palont of 1608 $29,
050, nnd has Just sold tho remainder of
his patent in America for $45,000
Patent Modicinos.
