That they nro led by a few Ignorant
irresponsible men I deny. Tlio com

and must concedo that theyaro men of
imciugcncc, sonricty, and sound sense.

nicy navo ueon compelled to organ
Izo In self defence Tlio operators were
aciiug in concert ucioro tnem, nnd eon
Htnntly working against their Interests.
They found that whllo their cmnlovors
were nmasslng fortunes, they were going
tho conMnnt round of their dangerous
business, their wages down to tho lowest
point, tncir children compelled to work
in the mines from bovhood without an v
chanco of education, nnd their wives
forced to pick their coal from tho rcfuso
of tlio mines. Their scanty wages were
pam in store orucrs at a Heavy prolit to
tho operator, leases wcro drawn bv which
whole families could bo thrown out of
doors In midwinter, nnd if nny man
dnredf murmur, "tickets of leave,''
" black lists" wero sent through tho
cntlro coal field to provent tho man
lrom getting broad for himself and fami
ly. Ono prominent operator oven claim
ed tho right to employ a doctor for his
men, nnd took his leo out of their wages
wncmer mey nau uecn sick or not.
Again It must bo remembered that
tho miners can not get steady employ
ment oven if willing to work. When
tho price of coal gets solo w In tho market
that it cannot ho sold nt n profit, tlio
operator suspends J his mines nro some
times Hooded, tho mnelilucry breaks, or
the colliery Is stopped for repairs.
As tho ovldonco lias shown, tho com
mon report about tho wages received by
miners nnd their laborers has been
grossly exaggerated. At tho wages now
offered by tho Delaware, Lackawanna &
Western It. It. Co., tho avcrago miner
would not earn over $2.-10 per day.
According to Kendrlck's own testimony
the uverago wages at his colliery under
tho "Qowcn Compromise" wcro In
August 1870 $2.SS; in September $2.C3;
and in November they slid down to
$2.). At tho offer mndo by tho opera
tors for 1871, with coil at $2.50 per ton at
Port Carbon, tho minor would only get
$12.00 por week, tho lnsldo laborer $10.00
und tho outsldo laborer $0.00.
When operators get up hero and swear
that there is no extraordinary danger in
the occupation, they confess an Ignoranco
about tho business that should render
them incompetent ns witnesses, lias
Avondale and Stockton so soon passed
from their memories? Do they read of
tho terrible disasters so constantly hap
pening in Great Britain? Why, sirs,
tho mine statistics of Schuylkill show
that in August, September, and October
of last year in that county alono thoro
wero flfty-soven deaths from mining,
ono hundred nnd thirty-llvo wounded,
leaving without supporters ono hundred
and thirty-four widows and orphans!
If operators nro not making money, if
tho profits of tho miner nro so great,
and tho occupation so safo and pleasant,
why do not tho former go Into tho
mines with their drills, picks nnd
powder, away from tho light of tho sun
und wholesome nir.whcro ilro-damp nnd
noxious vapors nro rife, nnd thus earn a
competonco their capital will not yield.
You will find them doing nothing of tho
sort. You will And them hero prating
about foreign labor, and against tho men
who have dug our canals, built our rail
roads, nnd created tho wenltli of this
country.
These men want protection, then,
again theso combined monopolists, who
nro daily asking for new favors at your
hands, and whoso power in tho legisla
ture wo have seen in tho past, and fear
in tho future. Neither tho starving out
plan of Mr. Gowcn, nor tlio bayonet
process advocated by tlio venerable
wltnets from Philadelphia, will have
half the cood effector cnliphtoned Ipl-Is-
