have been caused by the sinking of a
portion of tho track of tho Jefferson
railroad, where It crosses a swamp in
Ararat township, In tliU county. It
has been found that under the swamp
Is a subterranean pond, of Boveral acres
In extent and of considerable- dopth.
This pond Is covered by about six feet
In depth ol black earth, which supports
a heavy growth of woods. Tho trees
aro mostly soft maple, pine, hemlock
and birch, many of tlu?m ranging from
six Inches to thrco feet In diameter.
Last fall It was discovered that this
subterranean pond, contains many fish,
of tho kinds usually found in ponds In
this part of tho country pickerel and
"shiners" among others but all with
out eyes I In tho darkness of theirsub
tcrrancan abodo, they havo no uso for
tho organ of vision.
The Hall Pond, about a tnllo and a
half distant, la now "growing over."
A considerable part of It has becomo
subterranean within tlio last twenty
years, and probably before many years

shore It Is filled with a dense growth of
