Good. Tho gross receipts obtained
by tho ladles of St. Paul's Episcopal
Church at the lato Fair, amounted to
$300. So largo a sum mint certainly be
gratifying to the ladie-i, testifying as it
do s to tho appreciation in which their
efforts wero held. Thedinnrs furnish

bestcnaracter.
OvsTEits. Thesa delicious bivalves
are now fairly In reason mill our saloons
in town aro doing a good business. The
demand seems to Increa-e from year to
year, and bids lair to grow into a large
trade. Bloomsburg Is generally verv
well supplied botli as to quantity anil
quality, und nover more .o than at this
time.
Mortality. There would seem to
boquite an increase In tho number of
deaths amongst dogs und horses. Wo
have heard during tho past week of sev

alaj, by tho fell hand of tho destroyer.

The Lock Up. This public boarding

and numerous visitors havo enjoyed its
accommodations. Tho town, however,
has hi en quiet for tho most part, and
wo doubt much whether there-Is a placo
of its size in tho State which is ns well
behaved as Bloomsburg. Peaco and or
der rtign nnd everything is lovely.
Frosts. The first hard frost of tho
wason occurred on Wednesday morning
last and had a most chilling effect upon
vegetation. Up to that time nothing
more than hoar frosts had been observ

occasions. In view of tho fact that tho
Rummer had been unusually warm
fro-its had been looked for early in
tho season.

The Weather. Tho most Investor

peoplo took udvautagu of tho fact as

Tin: Hermit of Sullivan County:
A correspondent of tho Montrose lie
publican, who made u pilgrimage into
i iiu wilds il Sullivan county on a trout
ing expedition, thus speaks of an mi
clent outlier in tho wilderness :
About thirteen years ago a lunatic (I
say lunatic, because I do not think ho
could have had very good sense) of tho
name of David Cooper, aged about fifty
years, u bachelor, from the city of Phil
adelphia, camo In here with a party of
"sports," ou a deer hunt nnd trouting
excursion, nnd became so infatuated
with tho utter wilduess of tho tilm-p.
that on returning homo with his friends
ho parted from them without a wonl
as to bis Intentions, sold out his busi
ness, unu with about live thousand dol
lars In irold. returned hero and our-
chased about 700 acres of wood land ly
ing back of "Celestial City," part on
tho top ridgo of tho mountain known
as tho "Hon's Back." and rcachlm?
down tho mountain slopo to tho "Loyal
Sock," bounded on tho left by tho
ataneucrg ureok," nnd on tho right by
"Tho Polo Bridgo Creek," which de
rives its namo from the fact that It was
firnt spanned by a polo bridgo by Peter
rmsirong unu ins uisciptes.
Tho old sport paid cash, twentv-ono
hundred dollars, for seven hundred
acres of land, and with help that ho
uireii, twins way turccami ahainniles
in from "Celestial City," to n point of
land bounded by the threo creeks last
named, where ho built him u loir hou-o.
disniUsed his help and became a her
mit. He lived hero alone lor soveral
years, hunting and flahing, und borne-
times wormng very ham at clearing
Ills land, of which ho cleared nearly 50
acres. He made weekly trip on foot
iivo nines, to Liuporte, to lay in what
few provisions ho required. In these
trips ho had to nass through ono eori.er
of "Celestial City," and by the door of
u widow named Taylor, where bo used
to stop for a cool drink of water in hot
weather, and to toast bis shins in cold.
Ho became tired of hermit's life, pro
posed to tho widow, and was ncecnted.
and straiglitwuy ho went to work, got
out lumber, aud built him a largo two
and a half story frame house, u lowfeut
from the old log houe, came out to tho
Holy City, married tho widow and took
her to his hermitage. Tho bridal couch '
is still there, tho work of his own hands
hewn out of solid timber, with an ax.
It Is a curiosity, well worth u placo In
any museum, and far moro useful tliero
than it would over boas a bedstead.
Hero they lived some mouths togoth
er, how happily tho walls do not state,
though they do statoalmost everything
else. This lovely homo lie called "Coop
er's Itetreat," and seemed very proud
of it, though the people in tho country
around called it "Cooper's Folly," nnd
it is by litis name it is known to day.
Some months after his marriage, ho
weiu ouiauer urtuKiusi, as was nis cus
tom, to fell timber, and not returnliie;
at night, his spouse, after what must
havo been a teriibly lonely nlght to her
went next morning In bcurdi-bfliim,
and found blur crushed to death by a
ireo which nau ituien on mm. iiisoouy
was brought out to "Cilestlal City,"
whero it was coffined, and interred at
Lanorto. and afterwards removed to
Philadelphia by Ids friends.
Tho estate fell Into tho hands of his
widow, who left It soon alter histUath.
and the houso bus remained untenanted
ever since, except by trouting and deer-
Hunting parties, who use It lor a camp.
The doors, walls, window panes, wains
cotlug. and every available tpot are
literally covered with the names, deles
and addresses of persons nnd parties
wuo nave ucen in mere, with tnu num
ber of trout und deer killed. Wo found
room for tho names of our party, and
put them down, together with the num
ber of trout cauKht, At tho door Is a
largo spring-house, covering a spring or
water, so cold that It numbed ourhauih
as wo washed our trout In Its water.
