a wcok ago, but it would seem that
theroaro some pilferers left vet. On
Sunday night last nn attempt was mado
to rob tho smoke houso of itf. C. Sloan
on Market Street, which, fortunately,
was unsuccessful. Suspicious characters
hnvo beon discovered atunsccmly hours
near other buildings in town, although
wo havo heard of no losses sustained.

Disastkk. Last Friday ovcninir our
worthy Sheriff was seen comim? into
town in a most deplorablo plight, lead
ing his horses, instead of driving them.
It happened on this wise; his buggy,
which, probably, receives harder and
moro continuous usage than any other
in the county, finally became disgiiited
at Its treatment and "kinder gin eout,"
ono o: the wheels disconnecting itsell
nnd seceding from tlio vest of the con
cern, 'i no norses fortunately iuu not
offer to run away, doubtless because
they were pleased to get rid of tlio bug
gy altogether. Tho process ol recon
struction has been commenced and tho
vehicle, barring "a gentlu odor of mild
decay" will probably bo in as good or

Hail Stokm. A violent hail storm
occurred on Saturday last, In parts of
tins county, causing mucn uamago 10
trees, glass and growing grain. At-Col.
II. 11. IClino's near Orangeyillo tho
windows wero broken, trees stiipped
of half their leaves and tho grain in
jured. Sheriff Millard lost his cntlro
crop ot wucat lrum ins nirm in ucnire
township, tho storm was especially
sovero in Mifflin wherotho hail fell in
such quantities that heaps wero found,
nrtcr tho storm, of six or seven inches
in depth, ureat damnsro was done to
grain. In Scranton. tho storm was ac
companied by vivid uasnes oi ngiu
nine: two men were struck senseless,
ono of them having ills boot ripped
completely off of his foot, and another.
Georgo Van Loon, was instantly killed
wmiu standing near a winuow in ins
house.
In Iowa, many persons aro reported
killed and immenso damago dono to
trees and crops; cattle, hogs, Ac. wero
killed in largo numbers.
Tho country has not known for many
years such numerous and violent falls
of hail.

urday lust, as a son of Mr. Jacob Uauor,
of I'lalnflold township, this county,
oged about 12 years, was engaged In
rolling a field of clover on his father's
farm, ho accidentally slipped from tho
machine, tho wliolo wolghl of which

was found by nu older brother with tho
wholo weight of tho machltio resting
upon tho uiifortunato victim's head.

met at tho Court House on last Saturday
afternoon. Tho meetlnir was called to
order by Jacob Harris, tho President or

a statement of tlio financial condition
of tho Society. About SHOO are in tlio
nanus oi mo Treasurer, numerous re
pairs and unusual expenditures having
reduced tho amount to that sum. It was
shown that tho receipts and business of
tho Society wcro increasing annually.
Tho nomination for olllccrs having been
declared In order Messrs. W. 11. Koons
and Mathias llartman wero placed lu
nomination. Mr. Koons recolvod HO
votes out of sixty and was therefore de
clared elected. Tlio following nomina
tions wcro then mado for YIco Presi
dents, four of whom wero to bo elected.

to church Inst Sunday. I passed tho lie-
loriued Uliurcn, Third Street, and an
extraordinary crowd being assembled

unusual was going on there. They told

such a ceremony, I entered and was
