Manuroa-How nnd Whon to Use
Thora.
Tho best method of usltiK ntuble or
bnrnynrd mixnuro for corn or potatoes,
U to Imul It fresh fro-n tho collar In the
condition In which It reals In tho vaults,
spread It upon tho plowed Held, Mid
harrow It In with 11 decide. burrow.
ThN U wlmt Is called "long manure,"
and U a form which, nccordlnj; to tho
opinions of ninny farmers, Is unsultod
lo linmedliito uso; nlso, it Is objected,
that In spreading frosh manure upon
plowed fields and covering ltonly super
flclally with earth, much of It is lost by
evaporation ; or, nioro correctly speak-
lng,certaln volatlle.gaseoiis constituents
rls-o on tho brcczo nud nro waited awny,
In our vlow, both of these- notions are
Incorrect. Tho excrement of animals
rntiit undergo a kind of fermentation,
or putrefactive change, before it Is as
Blmtlatedby plruils.iiml it is better that
this bo carried forward in tho field, as
Ihero 11 Is In contact wllh tho soil,
which Is greedy to absorb all tho pro
fleets of the chemical change. Creative
power hits bestowed upon dry earth
prodigious absorptive capabilities. If
a lump of fresh manuro as largo as a
peck measure Is placed upon n plowed
field uncovered, and allowed to ferment
or decay la tho open air, tho absorptive
powera of tho earth are such, that it
will actually attract towards it titnmon
local and other gases, and thus rob tho
atmosphere of its natural volutllo prin
ciples. A film of earth no thicker than
tho rind of an orange, placed over a
lump of manuro, will effectually pre
vent loss of manurlal products, under
nil posilblo circumstances. It will bo
agreed then, that a harrow Is equally as
effective as a plow In protecting manuro
in an open field. It is bettor, to h ivo
the manuro near tho surface, as tho
rains can roach It, and dissolve tho boI
uable salts, and by percolation carry
Ticm down to tho hungry roots of plants.
Long manure is )iof tost when deeply
turned under by tho plow, but tho farm
er does not secure the wholo value of hid
dressing under this modo of treatment
iu any case .and on some soils tho loss
Is a-most serious one. In tho process of
soap-making, It becomes necessary to
set up n leach. Now, tho farmer will
not attompt to oxhaust tho tub of ashes
of its potash by forcing water into the
bottom and dipping the liquid off from
tho top. Tho natural percolating or
exhausting process Is downtcards, In ac
cordance with the laws of gravity. The
soluble alkalies and salts are driven
downwards, and iu the case of the leach
wo must have u vossel ready to receive
them at the bottom, and in thocaso of
tho same substances leached from ma
nure, wo must have tho manure so plac
ed that plant roots will bu at hand to
absorb them beforo they pas beyond
their reach.
Manuro is novcr so valuable as when
it Is fresh. It then holds iu association
not only all tho fixed soluble substan
ce natural to tho solid excrement, but
much that of great value, found only
in tho liquid. It Is In a condition to
quickly undergo chemical change, and
tho gaseous, ammonlacal products so
cured nro doublo those resulting from
that which has been iccalhered In aheap
out of doors for several months. Hot

wisest treatment U the removal of the

ple, natural conditions upon which' the
return, no less than the maintenance, of

often bo wllh advantage supplanted by
loosening diet, bleeding, almost invar
iably by audi n diet and by puro nlr.
Warm clothing nud thorough grooming
will usually do tho work of the blister,
ind do it much better. In nil cases of
strains, bruises, and wounds, water Is
in almost sovereign remedy ; and in
nine tenths of tho oases in which It Is
thought neco-snry to send for tho local
cow doctor or hnrso doctor, tho slmplo

not only cheaper, but far bettor In its
application and In Its effects. American

Maki.no Pigs PitoriTAiu.E. .V cor
respondent of the Western Rural de
scribes liis method of making pigs prof
it.ililo as follows:
I saw In your paper of a lato date an
inquiry as to tliu way by which to maUu
pigs profitable. I would say in the first
place.keep no more than arosuflleient to
oat what feed you have. If one pig
will eat it, give it to him; it is belter
than to feed it to two. In the next
place have u good, warm dry place for
them to sleep In, with plenty of clean
straw, changed twice u week. I raUod
nine pigs from a Suffolk sow and Ches
ter boar, last year, fed on milk and corn
mostly in the car, and all the milk they
would drink. They averaged 270 pounds
dressed, when eight months old. Keep
ing hogs poor ono year and fat tho next,
has exploded with mo years ago. I
.recollect having two pigs of a neighbor
ing farmer in 1815. I fed mine well
during winter, on corn and slops of
house. Ho Adhls co astojust keep the
them f.l ve. After about four months I
baw his pigs amliuid to him: "Our pigs
do not look a though they were of the
same litter." He wild they did not, but
that his would inula as much pork in
the full as mine. I told lilin I would
remember I, for if I was a fool It was
time I knew it, I slaughtered mine
when they wero fourteen months old.
Ono weighed 807, tho other -ill pounds.
IIo kept his ono month longer, and ono
weighed 232, and the other 233 pounds.
If I had not much milk, I should prefer
corn, ryo and oats, ground in equal
parts, hcalded and let Stand until it fer

Tho Treatment of Sick Animals.,,
Tho crying evil of tho agriculture of
this country Is, that wo have no good
ej-Btem of veterinary Instruction. Ex
cept in tho largo cities, and indeed, in
most of those, it Is linpossiblo to find n
well-educated veterinary surgeon.
Throughout tho whole length and
breadth of tho land, our poor dumb
brutes, condemned to suffer from dis
eases generally brought about by our
own carelessness or neclect. nro ob Hired
to bear tho still greater suffering of the
barbarous treatment of common farriers
and quacks, who know almost nothing
of thcorganlzatlon of their Lollies. As
a natural consequence, violent purging,
frightful blood-lettings, blisters and 11
rings, aro applied without thought and
without reason, entailing untold agony
to tho animal, and generally much loss
to Its owner. Of course, when an mil
mal Is tick, any farmer who Is Ignorant
of what should bo done ought to ecure
tho best ndvico within his reach. Hut
bo should always retain so much control
over tho treatment ns to avoid resort to
barbaious remedies, unless tho uusklll
cd practitioner can convince him thai
there is good reason for It for, as gen
cral rule, an animal left to tho unguld
tnl curutlvo processes of nnturo would
eonio belter out of Its troubles than if
eubjectod to tho operation of brutal
means for tho restoration of Its health.
With animals, as with men, there Is far
too much mcdlclno-giviug, hlltcrlng
and bhedlngj and probably nioro urn
killed or permanently injured ry tneso
nraclicos than aro cured by them. Of
course, iu some desperate caw, they
ore nctessury, but they should always
bo resorted to with caution, and with
much hesitation. In all minor diseases,

His first step was to look for tho door
way through whloh ho had followed
his goat; but lo his astonishment not
tho least traco of an opening of any tort
wastoboseen. There stood tho wall,
without chink or crack big enough for
n rat to pass through. Again he paused
and scratched his heal. His hat was
full of holes: "Why, it was new last
Shrovo tldo 1" said ho. By clsonco his
eye fell next on his shoes, which wero
almost new when ho last left home;
but now they looked so old, that they
wero likely to fall to pieces beforo ho
could get home. All his clothes seem
eu tn the same sad plight. The more
ho looked, tho more ho pondered, tho
raoro ho was at a loss to know what
could have happened to him.
iX length ho turned round, nud left
tho old walls to look for his flock. Slow
and out of heart ho wouud his way
among tho mountain steeps, through
paths where his Hocks wore wont towuu
der: still not a goat was to bu soeu
Again ho whistled and called his dog
but noglog came. Below him in tho
plain lay tho vlllago whero his homo
Was; so at length ho took tho downward
path, and set out with a heavy heart
and a faltering step in search of his
flock.
"Surely," said he, "I shall soon meet
somo neighbor, who can tell mo where
my goats nroT" But tho people who
met him, as ho drew near to tho village
wero all unknown to him. They wero
not ovo'i dressed as his neighbours wero
and they seemed as If they hardly spoko
tho samo tonguo. When ho eagerly
uiked eaoh as ho came up, after his
goats, they only stared at hlin and
stroked their chins. At last ho did tho
samo too; and what was his wonder to
find that Ills beard was grown at least a
foot longl "Tho world,"snld he to him
self, "issurely turned upsldo down, or
if not, I must bo bewitched:" and yet
ho knew the mountain, as ho turned
round again, and looked back on Its
woody heights; and ho knew tho houses
nnd cottages also, with their littlo gar
dens, as ho entered tho village. All
wero In the places lie had always known
them In; aud ho heard somo children
too (as n traveler that passed by was
asking his way,) call the vlllago by tho
very samo namo ho had always known
it to bear.
Again ho shook his head, nnd went
straight through tho villago to his own
eoitage. Alas I It looked sadly out of
repair; tho windows wero broken, the
door off Its hlugcs',und in tho court-yard
lay an unknown child, in a ragged dre.'s
playing with n rough, toothless old dog
whom he thought he ought to know,
but who snarled and barked i.i his face
when he called to him. Ho went Iu at
the open doorway; but he found nil so
dreary and empty, that ho staggered
out again like a drunken man, and
called his wifo and children loudly by
their names but no ono heard, at lent
no one answered him.
A crowd of woiikii and children soon
flocked around the strange-looking man
with the long grey beard; and all broke
upon him ut once with tho questions,
"Who nro you?" "Who is it that you
want?" It seemed to him to odd tousk
other people, nthls own door, after his
wifo and children, thnt, In order to get
rid of tho crowd, ho named tho first
man that camo into his head. "Hans
thu blacksmith?" i-ald he. Most held
their tongues nnd stared; but at last nil
old woman tald, "Ho went these seven
years ago to a placo that you will nut
reach to day." "Frits the tallor.thenV"
"Heaven rest his soul I" said an old
beldamupon crutches; "ho lias lulu
these ten years in a houso that he'll
never leave."
ivarl lvutz looked at tho old woman
again, nud shuddertd, as ho know her
to be one of his old gossips; but iaw sho
had a strangely altered face. All wish
to nsk further questions was gone; but
at last u young woman made her way
through tho gaping throiig, with a baby

Poor Karl could hold nolonger;"l am

ho took the thlld from his daughter's

Then several others ulso cried i.ut, "Yes

said or thought all, "can an honest

And now tho whole vlllago had flock

dogs barked, and all wero glad to see

that was a part of tho utory at which
Karl shrugged up his shoulders; for ho
