Tlii'y cultlvnto their corn much moro
Ihnioughly tlirtn formerly. Tho old
plan hero was to cultlvnto It once holh
ways, mul then hoo It, ami then, in thu
coursoof a low weeks, cultlvalo it iu;atn,
throwing tho soil to tho hills, and then
drew It up with tho hues. And this win
considered rather extra culture. ; It was
what farmers aimed at, and they rather
congratulated thcm-clvcd when thoy
could accomplish It. Now, llmnks,
itlnly, as I hellovo, to tho teaching of
tho agricultural press, tho idea of n cor
tain numher, of "cultivating" being
necessary is given and tho moro eiicr-
getlo farmers cultlvnto as often ns thero
nroany weeds to kill, and many intelli
gent and experienced men who have
tried tho plan cultivate onco a week or
ton duys whether thoro are any weeds
or not. This constant stirring of the
land develops the plant-food In the soli,
and also keeps It moist, and, especially
on a rather heavy loam, adds from
twenty-llvii to fifty per cent to tho crop,
while tho land Is Inar better condition
for the subsequent crops nf barley,
wheat and clover. I believe in "clover
and plaster." I hellovo In making rich
manure, and ti good deal of it. I hellovo
in carefully saving nnd implying It,
and also In ushigartlflcinl manures, nnd
salt and ashes ; but before nil, nnd nbovo
all, nnd beyond all, I hellovo In under
draining nnd thorough cultivation
hnvo no heart to talk about sclent lite
ngrlcullur.il questions, although I read
nearly all that is written on nllmiMcclH,
Tho ono thing tliat we most nerd, ns

and making tho laud mellow. Am.

Fences.
The best and cheapest kind of fencing
is tho great desideratum of which the
farmer is in quest from tlmo immemo
rial. Iloyond n doubt, wherever n per
manent lino of division orenclosurocnn
bo drawn, a live hedgo of hawthorn,
buck thorn, or osago is superior to nny
other, when it lias been fairly estab
lished. Nothing can exceed tho beauty
of tho English hawthorn in Spring and
Autumn. In tho months of May and
Juno tho hedges uro covered with tho
whito blossoms, which load tho air with
perfume, and in Autumn they nro red
with the ripo berries which nilbrd abun
dant food to tho little birds, nod aro in
lact, eaten by children, though they aro
rather mealy and insipid. In our coun
try, whero fields aro often divided, nnd
timber lias heretofore been abundant,
less attention has been paid to tho mode
of enclosing grounds, than In tho older
countries of Europe, but wo shall have
to como to It, beforo long. Tho forests
aro disappearing, sadly to the discredit
of our forecast, for wo nro already buf
fering in some of tho old settlements
even in this country, for tho want of
wood, not so much as fuel, for coal will
supply a moro economical heat, butsuf
ferlng, on account of tho chaugo in tho
climate, superinduced by tho destruc
tion of tho forests. Why tho mountains
should bo denuded for tho sako of tho
arablo land, which they afford, we can
not understand, In view of the injurious
cflccts upon tho health of tho surround
Ing country. Tho deprivation of tho
immeno amount of carbolic acid which
Is supplied by tho forest trees, finds a
poor compensation in Ihe additional

Tho Cnro of Ilnrnoss.
Perhaps nothing on a farm lioticr ru

Now If to tho bare consideration ofecoii

In nicely kept harness, something for
tho comfort of animals working in well
fitting, flexible leather, mid what value

not apologizo for asking attention, to
tins subject as important.
Harness ought to bo washed about
onco a month witli a spongo aud Cas-
tllo soap ono strap at u time and tho
soap removed by a clear-water spongo
as boon as tho surface Is cleansed.
Twico a year it should bo oiled, or
ortoner ifinuch used anilfrcquently wet
and dry. Unless you can obtain perfect
ly puro neat's fool oil, (such as Voter
Cooper's,) make it yourself. Tuko tho
root of a beef, crush tho bones well witl
n sledgo or axe, and boll them in n largo
pot of water for 12 houis. Make two
quarts of tallow from fried beef or mut
ton suet, and pour it into a fuur-quart
can (w)ilch should have a lid to kcei

Adda lumpofpuro yellow wax as largo

fill up tho can with neat's foot oil, and
removing it from tho fire, continuo to

uuouuhosnino consistence as hog's, lard.
Keep iu tho can u bit of sponge always
ready for use. It ought to bo when It

main moro Hoxlblu always afterwards

Leather which has become drv am
horny through long neglect, will re
ceive no Ixmeflt from grcaso applied to
it in Its dry nnd hard condition. You
must not only hnvo greaoo of tho rlgl
sort, but must know how to uso it
First, then, lake tho harness apart wher
ever It can bo unbuckled. If hnn
soak it in clear water (not warmer than
milk freshly drawn) for several hours,
Then wash tho piecos as directed with
Castllo soap, and work them in the
Hands until thoy nro soft mid ijlant
nnd If In very bad condition, this will
require c.iro nnd pntlenco. Hang In n
room where thoy wll not dry too rapid
ly. When about hnlf dry, apply tho
grcaso liberally on both sidles, nnd again
hang up, for at least ono day If possible,
A whito crust llko steal ino will bo
left on tho surface when tho leather Is
dry, which can bo removed with n dry
coarse cloth, .For common work har
ness nothing moro will bo needed, but
carrlngo Harness may bo again washed
with a spongo, and wiped with n dry
chamois skin.
Hoots nnd shoo, of cow hido, kip or
cair-eKin, ought to bo treated In tho
snnio way sovorul times a year. If the
surfaco is washed with Castllo soup,
they will tnkoa superior polish after
the fctcond brushing. Try tho comfort
of such boots, nnd I shall then bo nbo

THE
THE YOUNG FOLKS.
Ashputtol.
Tin: wife of a rich man fell slckj ami
when sho felt that her end drew nigh,
sho called her only daughter to her bed
side, and said, "Always ho a good girl,
mid 1 will look down from heaven and
wnleh over you." Soon nflerwards sho
shut her eyes and died, nnd was hurled
u tho garden; anil tho little girl wenl
every day to her gravounil wept, mid
was always good nnd kind to nil about
her. And Ihosuow fell nml spread a
beautiful white covcrlngover the grave;
but by tho tlmo tho spring came, nnd
thu sun had melted It nwny again, her
father had married another wife. This
now wife had two daughters of her own,
that sho brought homo with hor ; they
were fair In face hut foul at heart, nnd
It was now n sorry tlmo for tho poor lit-
tlo girl. "What does tho good-for-noth
ing thing want In tho parlor?" said
they; "thoy who would cat bread should
first earn it: away with tho kitchen
maldl" Then they took away her flno
clothes , nnd gave her an old grey frock
to put on, and laughed at her, and turn
ed hor into tho kitchen.
Thero sho was forced to do hard work;
to riso early before daylight, to bring
tho water, to mako tho fire, to cook.nnd
to wnsh. Upsides that, the sisters plngu
ed hor In all sorts of ways, and laughed
at her. In tho evening when she was
tired, sho had no bed to Ilo down on,
but was mado to lio by tho hearth
among tho nshes ; and ns this, of course
mado her always dusty and dirty, they
cillcd her Ashputlcl.
11 happened onco that tho father wns
going (o tho fair, nnd asked ids wife's
dauglilers what ho should bring. "Flno
clothes," said the llrst ; "l'earls nnd
diamonds," cried tho second. "Now,
child," said ho to his own daughter,
"what will you hnvo?" " t'he first twig
dear father, that brushes against your
lint when you turn your faco to como
homewards," bald she. Then ho bought
for the first two the flno clothes nnd
pearls and diamonds they had asked for:
and on his way hoinc,a3 ho rode through
a green copse, n hazol twig brushed
against htm, and almost pushed off Ids
hat; so ho broke It off and brought it
away ; and when ho got homo ho gavo
It to Ids daughter. Then sho took it
and went to her mother's grave and
planted it there; and cried so much
that it was watered with her tears.
and thero it grow and beenmo n lino-
tree. Thrco times every day sho went
to It and cried ; aud soon a llttlo bird
camo aud built Its nest upon the tree,
nnd talked with her, and watched over
her, and brought her whatever sho
wished fur.
Now It happened that tho king of
that laud hold a feast, which was to hist
threo days ; and out of those who camo
to it Ids son was to choose a brldo for
himself. Ashputtel'H two sisters wero
asked to como; so they called her up
and said, "Now, comb our hair, brush
our shoes, and tie our sashes for us, for
wo aro going to dance at tho king's
feast." Then she did as sho was told
but when all was done sho could not
help crying, for sho thought to herself,
she should so hnvo liked to liavo gono
with them to tho ball ; and at last sho
begged her mother very hard to let her
go. "You, Ashputtol I" said she; "you
who bavo nothing to wear, no clothes
at all, and cannot even dance you want
to go to tho ball V" And when she kept
oh begging, sho slid at Inst, to get rid
of her, "I will throw this ilMi-full of
pens into the ash-heap, and if in two
hours' time you have picked them all
out, you shall go to the ft-a-t too,"
Then she threw the peas down among
tho ashes; but tho ditto maiden ran out
at tho back door into tho garden, and
cried out
''Hither, hither, through the .sky,
Turtle-doves and linnets, fly !
lllarkbiril, thrush, nnd cliftuWli gay,
Hither, hither, lta-to awny 1
One and all como help mo, quick 1

Then first camo two white doves, Hy
ing in at tho kitchen window ; next
camo two turtlo-doves ; nnd nftcr them
camo all'tho little birds under heaven,
chirping and fluttering in; and they
flew down Into tho ashes. And tho lit
tle doves stooped their heads down and
set to work, pick, pick, pick; and then
tho othors began to pick, pick, pick :
nnd among them nil thoy soon picked
out nil tho good grnlti, nnd put It into n

thu end of tho hour U o work was quito

Then Ashputtol brought tho dish to
hor mother, overjoyed at tho thought
that now she should go to the ball, hut
tho mother Bald, "No, no! you slut,
you bavo no clothes, and cannot dnnco;
you shnll not go." And when Ashput
tol begged very hard to go, sho said,
"If you can in ono hour's tlmo pick
two of thoso dishes of peas out of tho
ashes, you shall go too." And thus
sho thought sho should at last get rid of
her. So sho shook two dishes of peas
Into tho nshes.
