FARMER'S COLUMN. When to Cut Timiier. Opinions vary In reij.irtl to tlmo of cutting tim ber to nmko It most ctitlurnblc. It Is Ktmerully conceded, liowuvur, Hint suin-nier- months nru brat, some advocating Juno, while tlio trco Is In full vlgor.nnd other later In tho season. A writer In thu llural H'orW.ulves his views, based upon experiment, thus: "I liuvo worked In timber, mid ex perimented as to tho best Hmo to cut It to make It last well; mul by actual observation have conio to tlir conclu sion that from tho loth of August to tlto 15th of Ki pleiiibcr Is tho best tlmo In tho yenr. Timber cutthcu, worms will not enter. Tho bark will remain on for about twelvo months, and then, whon moved, fall off of Itself, without any troublo. But my brother farmers will tay tho seasoti then Is too hot to la bor In tho tlmbar. Admitted ; bul ono tree cut then is worth thrco cut in tho winter; and if a person can only cut his timber down at thli tlmo, ho Is not necessitated to then work It up, hut an lot It lio till tho winter following, and It will do as well as being worked at tho tlmo when cut and at his lels: arc, If It Is twoycRrs after, he can work It up. "Hickory timber sut at that tlmo makes good rails, that will last nearly as well as oak. But unfortunntely for our farmers, they nro under tho necessi ty or do U) of cutting all or most of their timber in tho winter months ; and timber will dewy cut In thoso months in thisclimato, sooner than In any otli er month In the year. Aiter Potato DiaaiNO. The o rtl crop after potatoes Is weeds, which have ample time to maturo their seeds before frost comes, and to mako trouble for many years afterwards. Fow farm oh cstimato tho amount of damago dono to their lands by this untimely seeding. Wo have scon land so stocked with charlock, Canada thistles, and other weeds, that tho cost of all hoed crops upon It was fully doubled. Their presence depreciates tho value of the oats and barley, and even of grass. No grain or grass seed fit to bo sold can bo raised upon it, and oven tho manure mado from tho feeding of such crops is lc35 valuable by rcaon of tho foul seeds, Yet many farmers press right on, stock lug their lands with weeds, as if they wero a most valuable crop. Tho pola toes nro dug nnd marketed In July, or early August, and tho ground lies wasto for tho rest of tho season. If crops are not wanted, tho opportunity should bo improved to destroy weeds. Plow tho land as soon as tho potatoos nro off. Af ter ten days go over it with a harrow, Th Is wil 1 destroy a second crop of weeds In ton days moro go over it with brush harrow, whicu will destroy third crop. In two weeks follow with a harrow, and so on, until tho frost comes in November. A second crop may bo taken from tho potato grouud If not In good heart, sow good super phosphate, or Peruvian guano, at tho rate of 300 tt3. to tho acre, on tho old rows. Go over tho rows onco with a cultivator. Sow turnip seed sparingly upon tho fresh soil, and put them In with n light ono-lior.so harrow or bush. When tho turnips aro up, cultivato bo tweeu tho rows, and keep these spaces freo from weeds. Tho turnips will soon shade tho ground, and prevent tho growth of weeds in tho rows. Thero nro frequently threo months or moro between tho early potato harvest and tho closing of tho ground, and in this time a fine crop of while turnips may bo grown at a cost of lo3s than six cents a. bushel. They aro excellent for young cuttle, and will assist materially in making beef and mutton. Sometimes tho potatoes como off cprly enough for buckwheat or tho winter grains. If mnnuro Is judiciously used, two crops in a season may be iaken from tho. soil. American Agriculturitt. How much Lime to an Aciib. Somo tlmo ago I saw In tho German town Telegraph tho following paragraph: "I only put on 40 to 50 bushels of un slacked lime to the acre In my early liming. Latterly I have put on as much as SO to 100 bushels, and I believe that pays best. Limo on such soils as mine will improve the crops for 15 or 20 years if tho land Is not cropped with grain continually." Does it pay best? Everywhere only SO bushels Is applied. I do not think this plan pays best. English farmers pursuo n very differ ent courso In applying lime, and their pcrsoverence In tho same courso proves it to bo correct. They apply smaller quantities at shorter Intervals. Their argument is something after this man ner : Suppo30 wo tako two separate pieces, each containing nn aero, out of tho samo field, and givo them both 100 bushels of limo to the acre. Now supposo.as abovo tho limo runs out and requires renew lug in 20 years. Then flvo bushels aro exhausted in ono year or 10 in two. Suppose tho ground will givo 30 bushels of wheat (or Its equivalent In corn, oats or grass), per aero, the first year. At tho end of 20 years it Is fair to suppose that It would bring but 20. Thus 23 bushels will bo tho average crop for years or 500 IimH. Now, Instead of not liming tho other ncro, let 10 bushels of lime bo applied every second year. This would keep the avcrago crop at 30 bushels per acre, or COO In 20 years. That Is 100 bushels In favor of tho latter, which, nt $1.25 per bushel mako J125. Deducting $15 for tho limo, (at 15c. per bushel ;) leaves $110 for troublo for applying samo to land. Somo would say It will bo almost Im possiblo to spread 10 bushels evenly over an acre of land. If you think so (which I don't), then mix it with sand for clayey land orclay for sandy land, or washings from tho road, or dirt from tho wood pilo or woods. Tho benefit accruing from tho appll cation of tho eand, clay or dirt, will amply repay you for tho troublo of mix lng, which should bo dono well. EXrERIMBNT. It was nqulotSabbath cvenlngamong tho grnnlto hills, nnd ns twilight guvo laco to darkness, nnd tho stars ono by onoshowed their sparkling faces, I re tired to my chamber with my littlo prattler,of somo four nnd half years, to talk with him, nnd seek to direct the littlo mind In its first unfoldlngs. I was endeavoring, this evening, to givo him somo Idea of tho commandments, which ho wns learning to repent, nnd In order to explain tho meaning of tho words, .Thou shalt not steal," used littlo slor les ns familiar Illustrations. Many a question ho niked which I could hardly answer, such us "Mother, would I bo u thief Ifl took something that I know folks wanted out of tho way?" At last after hearing his prayors, I left him to think over tho subject, nnd for u half hour Ids littlo prattle nbout tho "thiol" could bo heard, ns ho communed with himself, nnd then ho wns hushed hi tho land of childhood's sweet dreams. Tho next day ho wont to school, nnd nt noon came bounding in, with tho ejaculation. "Mother, pa must got mo n now hoop nnd n stick to roll It with, Just like Georgy llolbrook'H." I assured him ho should have n hoop, but It wns not convenient to get it that day. When ho camo from tho evening session ho ran to mo with n forced laugh not his usual one, nnd n hoop In his hand, with "See, mother, I havo a hoop. So pa won't have to buy mo one, will ho?" I saw from his manner thero wns something wrong, but thought I would not notice it, but let It como out, ns I feltsuro It would; so I answered him Well, darling, you havo a hoop, and such n nlco ono go and play with It In tho yard, nnd hnvo n good time." Ho started, nnd then camo back will "You didn't kiss me, mother, when'l camo homo." Giving him tho desired kiss, ho took his hoop into tho yard. I stood nt tho window, nnd watched his movements, Ho would roll it n littlo way, then tako it up nnd look at it, ns though it went wrong; lio evidently seemed to be think ing of something, besides tho enjoy mcnt of his play. Soon tho hoop nnd stick wero carefully put away in the shed, and ho came in nnd seated him self by my side, with "Pleasoread to me, or tell moastory mother. I think I'm too tired to play any moro to-night." I told him a long story nbout u lit tle boy that did wrong, ntid did not tell his dear mother; how unhappy ho was nnd how wretched it mado her when sho knew it. Ho seemed very uneasy nnd then snld : "Now, please, mother, toll mo one fuuny story; not a truo ono llko that you know, but Just ono to mako mo laugh, liko thoso Cousin Mary told me,' (alluding to somo of tho "Mother Gooso Melodies" that a friend had amucd him with.) I told him I could not tell him any of that sort, for I did not think thoy would mako him feci happy. Well, tea-llmo came, and then his hour for rest. I went to his chamber as usual, to hear his pray crs, nnd I thought the littlo heart that had dono wrong would fell mo tho troublo that I could seo filled it. But conscience had not whispered quito enough, nnd Iforeboro toquestiou him When I gave hi m tho goodnight kiss, ho snld: "You dolovo iiic-.dim't you, mother'."1 "Certainly, I ahvnys love my ilarllns littlo boy." 'Well, God loves mo, too; don't ho mother?" "Yes, darling; Ho nl ways loves good children; butif thoy do wrongit grioves Him very much. I hopomy littlo Gran. villo won't do wrong, becauso ho has had a dear mother to toll him tho right way, nnd denr teachers;" and thou I told him of poor littlo orphnn children that had no ono to enro for them nnd lead them right, nnd that they would belcsstobiamoifthey wero naughty. I bado him good night nnd left him, knowing from tho moist bluo oyes, that tho littlo conscience was urging him to tell mother ho had dono wrong. The next morning his littlo pattering foot were early heard comlug to my room bringing his clothes for tho servant to dress him ho usunlly wnitcd till she went nfter him for breakfast; ho camo up to my side, nnd looked mo In tho faco so earnestly "Mother, I ain't n thief, am I?" "A thief, my darling! I hopo not Sly littlo boy n thief 1 Why do you ask that?" "Well, mother, you seo, that hoop brought homo was Qeorgy Holbrook's hooplkuowit washis.butit waslylngln thu road In tho water.mother, nnd I wns nfrald it would rot, so I brought it homo nnd put it in our dry sked, and am go ing to carry it back tills morning; nnd that won't bo n theft, will It, mother?" My heart was full ; I could seo thnt ho was trying to cover the act of steal ing by falsehood. I looked steadily at him and said: "Granville, did you mean to tako it back again?' Now remember, nnd tell mother tho truth ; you know 'tis Just ns wicked to tell n Ho as to steal." His big eyes filled with tears, nnd ho said: "No, mother; I didn't mean to enrry It back. I saw it lying In tho road, and I didn't think I wns being n thief till I brought it homo. Won't God forget nil about it If I carry it back, and never touch any moro things that don't belong to rao?" I assured lilm, if ho was very sorry, nnd ready to tako it back to tho littlo boy's mother, nnd tell iter that ho had been very wicked In taking It ; nnd that If ho never did tho same thing again, I thought God would forglvo him, If ho did not "forget" ids sin. Ho did not wait to cat his breakfast heforo tho hoop was roturncd, and my littlo boy, nssur ed of my forgiveness, was onco moro happy. But it was n lesson ho never will forget. And not long slnco,ho said to me: "Mother, I (hall never tako tiny- body'u things again, for something keeps telling mo to tell n wrong story about it." No, littlo ones, you cannot commit tho sin of stealing, without resorting to a wicked story to hide it. So, nover, never bo u thief.
