We havo taken tho libiMty of publishing
extracts froui xuveral letters sunt to us by
friends who will bo mrpriscd to fco them
letters. One of thc-sq letters from tlc assum
ed iianio wo bclicvo was intended for publi
cation. FntK. On Monday night, August lClh
thu distillery of ll. V. Kdgar in Fishing Creek
toiynMiip about two miles from New Colum
bus wa entirely destroyed by lire' together
with the contents- Late that evening luo
young men on their way from Camp meeting
stopped nt thu house and ailed for whiskey,
Mrs. Kdgar in tho alucnco of her hulnnd
told them there was uono tn bo had. Shortly
alter their departure tho buil.ling was dis
covered to bu in flames. Thero wero 3S0
gallons of high wines in tho distillery which
were destroyed. There was no insurance on
tho property. Loss about $800.
State Kvm. It will bo seen upon refer
ence to our columns that tho next exhibition
of tho Pennsylvania State Agricultural Socie
ty is to bo held in IlarrUburg, opening on
Tuesday, thu !!Sth ol September, and con
tinuing until the 1st of October. The prem
ium list is more than usually liberal, amount
ing to about $10,000. As the society is
about to hold consecutive exhibitions at a
fixed locality, its officers havo had leisure to
perfect conveniences which will add much to
the comfort of both exhibitors and visitors.
A now featuro in agricultural exhibitions is
introduced into the regulations of this year,
indeed it is but an experiment which we
hopa will provo a successful one. It is tho
admission of all articles and animals free of
duirje upon compliance with tho lcquire
mcnts of tho society relative to entries. Other
details relative to tho fair can be obtained by
addressing tho Secretary at Harrisburg.
Our neighbor with characteristic virulence
still insinuates that the Commiss'oncrs' Clerk,
or tho County Treasurer has stolen $535,00
from tho County. In a former number wo
explained the entire transaction. When the
llepullican states that no cITort was made to
detect tho thief, ho states what several of tho
stockholders of that paper know to bo un
true, as they wero consulted immediately up
on the discovery of tho theft.
It is not true that the count;) litis sustained
a dollar of loss ; nor will she, unless a jury
of her citizens upon oath declare that she
should.
If wo wero disposed to bo malicious wo
mightctoit by demanding what became of
tlic 1 00 ol stamps which Dr. John claimed
credit for from the Government as having
been lost, und which loss was allowed upon
his own statement. There is no more causo
for suspicion in the one caso than m the
other.
Tho attempt to prejudice public opinion in
a case about to undergo judicial examination
is so contrary to tho laws of right and decency,
that no other journal ever attempted it.
Tin: Keinihh'ain of last week referring to
the bill which passed Congress in 1SGS to re
lieve Dr. John from liability for stolen reve
nue stamps, says, that "Hon. Charles It.
Huckalew, who was nt that titno IJ. S. Sena
tor, we believe, was tho only u.an tn rai-u his
voice in opposition to this relief," The
fal.-ehood of this sta em'nt is fully shown by
the extiact from tho Ctmittss!omil (Ituhc
which wo publish in another column, but ol
course this exposure will not disturb poor
Itradley, who has great capacity for printing
lalselioods but none at all for collecting
them.
The fact is that Dr. John was treated
with great indulgenco in tho matter of the
stamps. He was not "ordered to return all
tho Uevenue stamps he had on hand to
Washington iu a registered letter," as UraJ.
ley asserts, but choe that modo of trans
mission hiuikclf. If he had sent them by
express they would have gone safely. In tho
next place, bo was careless iu not having tho
stamps examined and counted by tho Tost
Master or by soino one cl-e who could verify
bis statement afterwards. Hut ho was dis
charged from liability (wo suppose with jus
tice,) and all his editorial successor has to do
is to keep a civil tongue in his head about tho
whole transaction.
