Tho boy's naiiiQ was Xtccolo Pagantnil rOK THK COtUJIllIAN, The Peach Tree. Ui'ON n recent Journey to a point 17 miles distant from Ulooimburg, (tho direction, wo suppose, need not bo iccntioncd,) wo observed tho appear anco of fruit trees In tho act of putting on their summer follagonnd preparing for tho duties of tho year In tho produc Hon of their fruits. Among them all tho Teach treo looked most wo-begono nnd unpromising. Although In full bloom It was uniformly unsightly nnd gave llttlo promtso of full crops or pro longed cxlstenco. Wo did not observe ono tree in decent condition. And thereupon wo conceived tho idea of toll ing our readers something about this interesting and valuablo treo, for In formation concerning Its character und treatment appears to bo greatly needed. Tho Teach is an exotic and requires Judicious handling and caro In order that good results may bo secured from its cultivation. In tho early settlement of tho country nnd for somo tlmo nftcr- Wards.when lho sou was uncxhaiisted--full of rich mineral elements nnd veg etable matter lho Teach was much moro healthy and fruitful than it Is now. It grow with llttlo care, produced abundant crops, and was long-lived, in recent years, however, It is compara tively feeble, short-lived nnd unfruitful. It very commonly lias tho curl in tho spring, is scourged by the borer, and Is subject to a destructho and Incurablo disease, widely oxtended, known as the yellows. It cannot, ordinarily, bo grown with success on low grounds and Is onen killed or checked in growth nnd vigor by severe winters. This constitutes tho chapter of ovlls which wo nro to con front and study in tho treatment of the Teach. Now for remedial measures and im proved management, by which this princely fruit may bo produced in abundanco and secured for common use. Wo will fctato our recommendations, (based on good authorities and observa tion,) in duo order ami as briefly as possible. I. In planting thoPeacIi sccuro sound, young trees. If thoy havo tho yellows in their constitution tho experiment of planting them will bo hopolcss. If pos- slblo thoy should be, In age, only ono year from tho bud. Then uninjured roots with futuro unchecked and vigor' ous growth may bo expected. It is a trutli npplicablo generally to tho culti vation of all trees, that tho younger they aro transplanted tho better. 2. If possible, plant in situations com parattvely clovated, If for no other tea- son to avoid tho cxtrcmest cold of win ter. For It Is by a natural law that tho coldest air falls to tho lowest levels. 3. Bo not plant in sod-bound fenco corners, nor in holes surrounded by un broken earth, but in open and mellow ground to bo cultivated afterwards but not with tall or cxhaustivo crops. Plant tho trees 10 to 20 feet apart. 4. Manure- reasonably, and by all means supply wood-ashes to tho soil if thoy can possibly bo obtained. Tho Teach demands potash as u condition of vigorous life and will richly recompenso him who supplies It. Leached ashes may bo supplied freely; unleachcd in modcrato quantity, to bo sown broadcast on tho surface and allowed to filter into tho soil gradually with rains. S. Kcop tho hirer out of tho root, Don't rely upon digging him out, or killing him by any external application. IIo may bo kept out effectually, at least for many years, by the simple nnd coa venicnt device of a paper collar nt tho root. Tako a strip of hardware, mntch, or other tolerably rigid but still pllablo rapcr, and enclose tho trunk with It, nt the ground, and tlo It on with woolen string, Tho collar should bo Ovo or six Inches in width, half below and half a novo mo surface, this will provent tho Insect which produces tho borer from laying her eggs In tho bark. Tho woolen string will not rot soon, nnd it will stretch with thoirrowth of tlio tree. Other remedies for tho borer nro num erous, but few of them can bo rolled upon. Ono of them, snnctloncd by tho highest nuthorJty, Is that of heaping about half a peck of air-slaked llmo or leacnen wood-asnes arounu tlio trunli of tho tree, to remain from Hay to Oc tober, during which tlmo tlio borer In sect docs Its mischief. As to tho vol. lows, tho only scnslblo mo'do of deaiitifr Willi a treo affected by that disease is to cxtermlnato it by 11 ro root and branch, otherwise it may contaminate other trees. Tho 'curl' is not fatal nor very injurious. It is produced by nn insect stinging tho leaf and may bo remedied oy syringing tno leaves with a wcuic solution oi soap ami touacco. 0. Wo come, lastly, to n most Impor taut point In tho treatment of tho Teach; a point which Is universally neglected amongst us, but by attention to which tho very best results will bo produced. It is tn Mm down from (he top, or, to uso tho lancuaco of frult-crowers. to practise tho iorleniiig-in system of urumnir. .Never cut unwaros. or. witn- out special reason, remove tho lower branches, lioforo tho leaves havo push ed In the spring pass over tho head of llio treo nnu cm on irom ono-imru to one-half tho wood growth of tho previ ous year from tho extremities of all tho nrancnes, tauing caro as iar as conven ient to cut Immediately above leaf-buds (not nower-uuus) extending outward, in order to spread tlio head of tho treo to givo it a proper lorra nnu numic tho sunlight nnd air freely. Trees prun oil In this manner will not overbear and exhaust themselves when young; will bo kept ut a convenient height; tho central and lower parts of tho tree will retain bearing branches; all tho buds will bo kept vigorous; tho treo will bo healthy, will bear winters well and bo long-lived, nnd lastly, tho fruit will bo very greatly improved in slro and quality. To sum up; Having obtained and located in good open grounds, healthy young trees, let them bo supplied with wood-ashes In counectton with moder ate tillage, keep the borer from tho root and trim in regularly every year from tho top, and we can rely upon having, under all ordinary circumstances, rella blo nnd valuablo orchards of tho Teach.
