igal. Col. says, Ulysses 1 Ulysses ! let
us bo thankful and give praiso that
our beloved Mayberry has returned to
us thoroughly contrite in spirit and en
tirely purged nnd absolved from all
stigma and crime that attached to a
bolter or renegade, and asks that ho
may bo again admitted to our midst and
allowed somcofthc crumbs that fall from
our (able.
It may not bo inappropriate to nar
rate briclly tho circumstances attend
ing tho contest Tor tho position hereto
fore referred to. (for which Information
I am indebted to sovcral Ilepublicans
from Catawissa) At tho tinio tlio eom-
protuho was allcctcd between Col.Ivnorr
and Dr. John, rolativo to thu olllcu of
Assessor, thu Col. was so elated at the
result, that pledges of aid and appoint
ment wero freely given to those who
would in tho least, advocate his ap
pointment, nnd solicit names to his pe
tition. But ho most cmphuticallyidt.
clared that no Johnsonite, nor any ono
In tlicslightesttalntcd thcrcwith.should
receive tho remotest recognition from
him. After tho momentary excitement
and exstacy had somewhat subsided, ho
rellected that he might have Hindu some
very foolish and absurd promises, but
not being entirely clear and satlsiled ou
that point, and feeling a llttlo delicato
as to what actiju should bo taken, ho
very prudentiiilly Informed tho appli
cants for ofllco that thu responsibility
was a weighty oau, and desired tlicin
to get tlio endorsement of tho people to
their appointment by way of petition
that ho might bo justified in his action ;
ho furthermore desired to consult witli
Ulysses and very strongly intimated
tho appointment of his (Ulysses')
choice. Now I assert that ho violated
every pledge in tills respect that ho over
inado to Mr. Fortneror his friends, not
Withstanding his conscientiousness to
tlio contrary. Mr. Portlier, who was an
applicant presented his petition with
over ono hundred and forty names to It,
every ono of them Bcpublicans and
among which wero tho most prominent
(and generally influential) of that viein
ity. Ho also bad a letter from Mercur
recommending his appointment. On
tlio other hand Maybcrry had at least
seven signers from Catawlssa, besides
the names of Charles, Joshua, Jeremi
ah and others from tho Bloom District
And Charlio said in addition unto Sam
uel, notwithstanding Benjamin should
havo tho appointment, that the wishes
of tho people bo gratified, yet as ho did
not consult wltn us neither ask our us
slstanco, (who monopolize tho dlsposl
tlon of officers in tills County) ho must
not bo appointed. Mayberry is near to
us and has dono all theso things, there
foro It is my wish and I mako it in tlio
naturo of a Hat that ho receive tho suf

answered and said, Charles inasmuch
as It Is thy wish It shall bo done, and if
1 havo to violato all tho solemn vows
and promises I hnvo mado to tlio con
trary. I acknowledge tho power nnd
lniluenco thy wealth glvcth theo and
ungrateful would I be, (knowing thut
your good wishes and all'ectlou aro with
mo) should I In tlio least disregard thy
mandate. It matters not to mo nor
tho peoplo of tills County, how unmer
ited and unworthy tho appointment, or
obnoxious tlio Individual, whom you
recommend, yet thatyoursllghtest wlsl
may bo gratilled Is tlio height of my
