We don't entirely agrco with our
friend, Thomas Median, respecting the
Cataw'issa raspberry, who admits that
if properly managed it is productive
and valuable as a lato sort. Ho says.or
is represented to say, "all that is neces
sary, is to cut It down In tho spring to
about two foot and pllo plcnty.of man
ure about tho roots on tho surfaco of tho
ground." Why cut it down in the
spring, and why to two feet? Wo were
among tho first to cultlvato this rasp
berry in this neighborhood. Wo com
menced Bomo twelve years ago by
purchasing six plants. Subsequently
ono plant was sent to us by Col. Paxton
of Catawissa, who originally discover
ed tho raspberry, growing In tho old
Friends' burvinc eround at that place,
and wo found it to bo identical with tho
others. Our own rulo has been to cut
tho canes down oven with tlio ground
tlio last of Novembcr.tcover with ma
nure and let alone. Tho manuro an
swers as an excellent mulching tho
followingyear. By this means tho whole
strength or tho stool or roots is llirown
into tho neto wood, and a far moro pro
ductive crop is obtained. It begins to
ripen about tho 20th of August nnd con
tinues to furnish a supply far Into Octo
ber, if tho season is favorablo. Wo havo
had them upon our tablo on tho 11th of
November. Tho poor crop which tho
foot of tho previous year's wood will
afford is not needed when there aro
plenty of other berries for early sum
mer use, and It detracts just about in tho
samo proportion from tho fall crop. Wo
think highly of this fruit and havo a
profuso supply from about twenty-five
stools every year without any flgns of

Tlte Pen a n Field Crop.
Tim pea has recently attracted a good
deal of attention, and deserves it. It is
notprobablo that It will over compete
with Indian corn in localities and soli
favorable to tho fatter, but on somo soils
and in somo localities tho pea will yield
much tho heaviest and most valuablo
crop. And this is tho case, with soils
which aro Incapable of bearing a full
crop of corn. Thero is, however, ono
drawback of tho culturo of tho pea
which gives corn great advantago over
it. Wo cannot stimulate peas to tho
samo extent as corn. If wo manuro too
heavily they nro apt to run to straw,
and tho proportion of grain is diminish
ed ; while, on tlio other hand, so long
as wo glvo proper attention to corn, we
cannot manure too highly, as overy ex
tra pound of mauuro will tell in an In
creased crop. Rut if wo happen to havo
a plcco of land for which we have not a
sufficient supply of manure, it will pay
much better to put in a crop of peas
man a crop or corn.

n crop of peas ; but unless the corn or
roots nro well cared for tho contrary

and coach-grass for example) upon

effect. It often happens that when the
farmer is not able to enrich his laud
sufficiently, the corn crop hardly pays
the expense of cultivation. In such
cases, by ndoptingpeas wo can dispenso
with much labor and yet secure a pay
lug crop.
Wo do not intend by this to recom
mend a slovenly habit In tho culture of
peas. Wo only say that whero tho
farmer Is unable to command a full sup'
ply of manure and labor, peas will pay
better than corn.
Tho real value of the pea as an article
of food Is difficult to determine, nnd ita
rationing power has been variously
tlmated. Two bushels of peas aro count
ed by bouio equal to three of earn, whllo
others do not hcsltato to assign to them
a much highor proportional value.
