required, within sixty days after tho

ships, under a penalty of fifty dollars.
Tho clerks should, therefore, bear this
fact in mind.
On Monday last, whllo a Mr. Lawalt
was moving, ono of tho horses got
frightened at a passing train nt tho Ber
wick It. It. crossing, and backed tho
wagon into it. Tho result was a com
pleto wreck of both wngon aud furni
turo, and a narrow escape of tho horse
and driver.
Mrs. Twitciieli., tho relict of tho
miserable man who committed murder
nnd suicide, has given a lengthy state-
meet to tho Philadelphia Press. Sho
declares that sho knows not how or by
whom the murder of her mother was
committed ; hut that when bho visited
her husband in tho prison, ho implored
her to avow herself guilty, in erder
that his life might bo eavcd.
Assessor. Col. Samuel Knorr, of
Bloomsburg, has been appointed Asses
sor of this district. This will no doubt
bo generally satisfactory to tho Itepub
licans, as tho Colonel Is a staunch ndvo-
cafo of tho party, and was ono of tho
electors on tho Presidential ticket last
Fall. Tho retiring Assessor, Bobert F.
Clark, Esq., lias conducted tho ofilco
well, Justly dealing between tho tax
payers and tho Interests of tho govern
ment. Wo havo had tho fortuno to
servo as Assistant under tlio administra
tion of soveral Assessors, and all must
suy that tho affairs or tho ofllco havo
