PnoiiATiiiY no class of our citizens work harder nnd nro poorer paid than boatmen. Ten years ngo fortunes wero mndo at tho business, but now thero Is so much competition, nnd tho corpora tions tako such enormous tolls, that but llttlo rcmnlns for tho boatman. Ma ny consider It an Indolent vocation. Nothing Is farther from tho truth. It Is not comfortablo to stand hour after hour nt tho holm 'on tho burning deck' under n hot July sun, nor Is It pleasant to bo drenched by April showers or chilled by November blasts as pilot, bowsman, or, driver. And then comes tho "Jam," where boats full to pass on account of low water or becnuse they nro overladen; when mules tug, and men pry, and boys curso until from ono or tho other of theso causes, or nil com bined, tho boats nro loosened. Then conies tho raeo for tho next lock, cspo dally when In tho "Tido Water Divis ion," whero they occur every mllo or so; and as tho goal Is nppronched, tho whip Is unmercifully applied to tho poor brutes, and yells from tho Captain becomo louder nnd more frequent. At tho crisls,ns n matter of courso, tho tow lino breaks, tho boat takes n "sheer," and fresh complications ensue, ending frequently In n genernl fight. Anon comes tho "break," which com pels tho boatmen to lay by for weeks, frequently, and spend tho profits of ma ny months labor In supporting nn Idlo team and crow. Confined to tho narrow cabin, without employment, nowondor gambling nnd carousing became tho rulo Instead of tho exception. Boats destined for Baltimore, or Philadelphia, generally drivo night nnd day when nearlng Havro do Grace, ns they nro towed from thero by steamboats, nnd tho teams havo scvoral days rest. Thero is also much competition to bo first In tho "tow," as it gives a choice of posi tion. In tho summer of 1851, whllo n lad of fourteen years, I held tho responsible position of guardian nnd driver of thrco mules, attached to tho boat "Kaleido scope, of Dauphin," commanded by Captain S., of Beach Haven. It was about seven o'clock in tho evening when tho steamer which was to tow us to Baltlmoro had collected tho boats, amounting In all to twenty-one. Tho sun was just sinking behind the waters of tho Chesapeake as wo left tho harbor of Havro do Grace. Tho sceno was a novel ono to mo, and as I had worked day andnlgbton t lie trip down, I hailed tho resplto with Joy, nnd anticipated with pleasuro tho good tlmo I would havo after selling the old ropes and Iron-a driver's prerogative-gathered on tho way. After watching from tho deck tho bluo wuters of tho Bay, tho fish ns they leaped from tho water to gaze at thostrango intruders into their nativo clement, tho noblo steamer which walked llko a thing of life through tho water, dragging In its wake tho cap tlvo train of boats, I wont to my cot to sleep, expecting to bo In Baltimore by morning. About midnight tho rolling and pitch ing of the boat, and tho shouts of tho watchmen awakened me, and I learned that a.fearful storm was raglug. Dress ing myself hastily, I groped my way to tho deck, and was almost carried from my feet by tho vlolenco of tho storm. I learned that wo woro just off Turkey Point, and a few miles north of Pool'slsland. Our boats wero llly-flt-ted for such a storm, nnd lay almost completely at tho mercy of tho waves. Sometimes wo wero on tho crest of a huge billow, nnd from thence could sur vey tho stormy scone, and again, we would sink Into tho trough of tho sea between tho wall-like waves, which threatened momentarily .to close over us. Too steamer was compelled to an chor, thoughln immlnentdaugerofdrlv- ing ou tho rocks. Tho wind Increased in fury. Wo hud two hawsers from tho steamer at our bow, and for further se curity put down four anchors nnd tho stove, beeauso if wo broko looso tho wholo tow would bo adrift. At last a cry from tho Captain an nounced that the cable had parted and tho boats became uninanageublo, brenk ing loose from tho fastenings and doing nli kinds of damago by knocking against each other. Tho hatches of ma ny of them blow off, and they soon sank with their mows nnd cargo. Our boat was old, and to add to ourmlsery, com menced leaking, so that wo almost de spaired of saving it. Every cheek was blanched with fear: tho stoutest hearts quailed; nnd thoso who but n few hours beforo wero breathing curses, now hum bly knelt and begged tho Ruler or tho storm for mercy. While wo wero scudding beforo the wind and completely nt Its mercy, wo saw another boat a short distance from us, nnd wo at onco prepared for tho Im pending collision. As wo reached It, however, tho wavos raised us to their highest point and tho other boat lay in the trough of tho sea. All shuddered and braced themselves; but tho waves boro us onward, and as n tier jumps upon its prey, so did our cr.ift leap up on the ono in tho gulf below, nnd sank it nnd all on board, never to rlso again. Soon daylight appeared, and it on ly served to mnku tho destruction and our misery tho more apparent. As half tho boats hud been loaded with lumber, boards and plank strewed tho Bay far and wide. Tho crafts thomsolves wero much scattered; some wero drifting out to sea, soiuo were ou tho shoro of tho mainland or Island, and nil wero more or less shattered. Wo also began to suf fer tho pangs of hunger. Expecting to breakfast tho following morning In Baltlmoro, wo had negloeted laying In stock of provisions, and now wco on tho Bayduriugu fearful storm In u leaky boat, without food or fresh water. Towards evening the wind abated, and tho steamer proceedod to gather up tho remnants of the scattered fleet. By sun-set wo got under way, but wero soon subjected to a new misfortune. Tho steamer run iidou mud-bank,whero sho stuck fast. All hands wero then bet to work to lighten her by loading tho cargo into tho boats and after a few hours labor silo was afloat again, and headed Inwards pur destination. As wo steamed along, It became, evident that wo wero not tho solo sufferers by tho tempest, ns many vessels scudded by us under baro poles, and many of thorn bearing biennis of distress. Bv tho next morning wo readied North Point, whero tho Patapsco river outers Chesapeake Bay, and whero Lords' North anil Buto wero defeated in 181 1 by tho American nrmy. For sev eral hours tho steamer tugged nwny, trying to round tho Point, the wnlers about which, on account of tho strong current, ebbed nnd flowed with tho force or n mielstrom. It was not until night that wo succeeded in getting lntd tho river. A few hours later wo reached Baltimore, and tho dismantled vessels, many of which had broken from their moorings, showed how much tho ship ping thero had been damnged. Ex hausted, nnd nearly famished ns I was, novcrdld I feel moro grateful to tho Giver of all good, than when wo made our crnfUccuro to tho Baltlmoro doctc. Quir.N Sake? E. W.
