upon hla head to feel It, as ho hail In
turn felt thoso of hU brothers.
Tho Ogre, who felt tho golden crowiis
said, "Truly, I was nbout to do a pret

too much last night." Ho then went
to tho bed whoro his daughters' slept,
and having felt tho llttlo nightcaps thnt
belonged to tho boys. "Aha!" cried
ho. "Hero nro our young wags I Let
us to work boldly I" So saying, he
cut without hesitation tho throats of his
s o v o n daughters. Well patlsflcd
with this exploit, ho returned nnd
Btretchcd himself beside his wife. As
soon as Llttlo Thumbllng heard the Og

budo them dress themselves quickly
nnd follow him. They went down soft
ly into tho garden and jumped over tho
wall. They ran nearly nil night long
trembling all tho, whlo land not know

Tho Ogre, awaking In tho morning,

dress tho llttlo roguos you took In last
night." Tlie Ogress was astonished nt
tho kindness of her husband, novcr sus
pcctlng tho sort of dressing ho meant
her to glvo them, nnd fancying ho or
dercd her to go and put on their clothes;
she went up stairs when sho was greatly
surprised to find her daughters mur
dered and swimming In their ownblood.
Tho first thing sho did was to faint (for
it U tho first thing thnt almost nil wo
men do In similar circumstances.) The
Ogre.fearing that his wife would bo too
long about tho job ho had given, her to
do, went upstairs to help her. Ho Was
not less surprised than his wife, when
ho beheld this frightful spectacle.
"Hah I what havo I havo done?'' he
ox claimed. "Tho wretches shall
pay for It, and Instantly 1" Ho then

face, and having brought her to, said,
"Quick! give mo my seven lea'guo boots
that I may go and catch them." Ho
set out, and after running In every di

the noor children', who were nofinoro
than a hundred yards from their fa

over rivers as easily as if they were the
smallest brooks. Llttlo Thumbllng,
who perceived a hollow rock closo by
where thoy were, hid lu.s brothers in it,
and crept In nfter Ihcm, watching nil

Ogre feeling very tired .with his long
Journey to no purpose (for sovcn-lenguo

was inclined to rest, and by chanco sat
down on tho very rock In which tho
llttlo boys had concealed themselves..
As ho was quite worn out, ho had not
rested long beforo ho fell asleep, and
begun to snoro so dreadfully that the
poor children wero not lesj frightened
than they wero when ho took up tho

Llttlo Thumbllng was not so much
alarmed, and told his brothers to run
quickly Into tho house whilo tho Ogro

speedily reached homo. Llttlo Thumb

pulled off his boots, and put them on

fairy bootn, they possessed tho quality of
increasing ordiminlshing in slza accord
ing to that of tho person who wore
them, so thaathey fitted him as perfect
ly as If they had been made for him.
Ho went straight to tho Ogro's house,
where ho found his wifo weeping over
hor murdered daughters. " Your

her, "Is In great danger, for ho has been
seized by a baud of robbers, who hnvo
