completed soon, when tho old veterans
and surviving widows will recelvp their
long walled for pittance.

Commissioner of Internal Revenue has
decided that farmers havo no right to
havo their grain manufactured into

license to tho Government, and If they
do, they nro liable to tho penalties pro
vided by law. We mention tho fact
for tho benefit of tl.oo who may bo in
terested in knowing it. Day by day
tho people nro becoming more and more
acquainted with tho face of tho tax col
lector, and wo aro growing moro famil
iar with tho ramifications of tho Inter
nal Itevenuo law.

how imposslblo it is to persuade wash
erwomen so to wash flannel clothing as
to prevent it from shrinking. Washer
women are but human, and if one tries
to persuado them into unaccustomed
grooves, thojob will bo found much
like that of driving pigs to market.
Now, by putting n llttlo borax into cold
water, it will not only como out better
cleansed, but that there will absolutely
bo no shrinkage. Wo throw out tho
hint and can vouch for tho efllcacy of
tho recipe. But then, of course, it would
bo very dlfllcult to And a washerwoman

and uso borax.

nicthods of getting rid of stumps are
recommended, which aro at least worth
trying, Thero are plenty of old slumps
now standing In the fields, which ought
to bo removed, they tiro always in tho
way of tlto plow, and tlio wagon nnd
cart frequently upset over them.

crudo petroleum. In tho first ease, tho
acid becomes tho destructive agent

when the stump becomes saturated, as

White Wash.-As tho season is near
at hand for whitewashing buildings
fences, &c, wo tuko this opportunity to

very superior whitewash paint, by
taking two qunrts of skimmed milk,
eight ounces of freshly fclaked limo, six
ounces of linseed oil, two ounces of
wlilto burgundy pitch, and threo pounds
f Spanish white. Tho limo must bo
slaked in' water expotod to tho nlr mixed
in about ono-fourth tho milk. Tho oil (in
which tho pitch has provlously dissolv
ed) must bo added a llttlo nt a time.
Then add tho rest of tlio mill:, nna af
terwards tho Spanish whlto. Color It
to suit, (if you do not prcrer a white
paint) with Spanish brown to mako a
red pink; with Spanish brown and fine
ly pulverized clay, to mako u stono col
or j with yellow ochro or chrome, to
mako a yellow color, and so on.

Orphan Schools has been received. It
embraces a period of tlx months, from
December 1, 1807 to Juno 1, 1803. Tho
total expense being $230,070,20. Aver
ago cost of each child $09,00 or at tho
rate of $138,13 per year. Tho Superin
tendent lias not been nblo to keep tho
expenditures for tho year ending .luno
1, 1800, below $150,000,00 nnd he osks an
appropriation of $00,000,00 In addition
to the $100,000,00 given by tho Legisla
turolastwlntcr.Tho estimated cost of tho
system for tho year ending Juno 1, 1870
Is $101,700,00.
It Is stated that tho number in tho
schools now (3131) Is larger than over
before, and, most probably, ns largo as

Nothing Is said about tho removal of

partisan issues; its true solution will
