I think tho benefit which appeared nt

and farmers were tempted to keep too

said to himself, "That will not bo very

th floor. Ho tried fur eight days to
Mop on this fatal tall, but It uppeared to
bo full of quicksilver, so continually
was It In motion. At length tho King
had tho good fortune to surprise Jlluon
whilst lie was sleeping, and stamped
upon ills tail with all his force. Miuon
awoke, squalling horribly, then sud
donly ho tool: tho form of u great man
and regarding tho prlnco with eyes full
of anger, ho sa,d to him, "Thou shnlt

i.troyed tho enchantment which pro
vented thee from doing so, but I will
be avenged. Thou shalt have n son
who shall always bo unhappy until the
moment when lie shall discovor that
ho has too long n nose, and If thou dnr

hou shalt die Immediately." Althougl
tho King was very frightened nt tho
ilght of this great man, who wns an
enchanter, he could net help laughing
at this threat. "If my son has too long
a nose,', wild ho to himself, "unless ho
oo either blind or without arms, he can
uwnys seo It or feel It."
The enchanter having disappeared
tho King sought the princess, who coil'
-ented to marry him : but his hnpiil
ness was of brief duration, for ho died
at tliu end of eight months. A month
afterwaiils tho Queen brought Into tho
worm a mtlo prince whom they named
Uesir. IIo had largo bluo eyes, the
most ucnutirul ln tho world, and a pret
ty little mouth, but his nose was so big
that it covered half liisface. Tho Queen
was Ineoiuolablo when alio saw tills
great nofoj but tho ladles who were
with her told her th 1. tho nose wns not
so largo as It nppeared to her: that it
was a Ilomau nose, and that sho might
learn from history that all heroes had
largo noses, ho Quoon, who passion
aieiy loveu tier son, was charmed nt
this discourse, and from constantly
looking nt Deslr his nose did not appear
so large to her as.nt first. The I'rlnco
was brought up with care, nnd iu soon
as ho could speak thoy told all sorts of
shocking stories before him about peo
pie with short noses. They allowed no
one to conio near him but thoso whoso
noses in toinertegrce resembled his own.
ami tno courtiers, to pay their court to
tho Queen and her son, nulled the noses
of their little children several times In
the day to mako them longer ; but it
was no uso pulling, for they anneared
snuo-noseu oj thosiUo of I'rlnco Deslr.
As soon as ho could understand It
they tuught him history, nnd when
they spoko of any great prlnco or beau-
tlful prlneess they always snld they
had long noses. All his npartmcnts
wero full of portraits with lariro noses.
nnd Uesir became so accustomed to re
gard tho lehgth of the noso nsn beauty,
wiai no wouiu not Tor a crown have had
his In tho least diminished.
When ho was twenty years of ase.
and they thought of marrying him,
they presented him with tho portraits
of several princesses. IIo was enchant
ed with that of Mlgnone. Sho was tho
daughter of a great King, and heiress
to several kingdoms ; but Desir thought
nothing of that, so much was ho en
grossed by her beauty. This Princess,
whom ho found bo charming, had, how
ever, a little turned-tip nose, which had
mo prettiest ellect in tho world on her
face, but which threw tho courtiers ln.
to tho utmost embarrassment. They
had acquired the habit of ridiculing
little uoscs, and they could not restrain
a smflo nt that of tho Princess, but De-
tir wouiu allow no raillery on this sub
ject, and ho banished from his court
two courtiers who had dared to diimr.
ago tho noso of .Mignone- The othersn
prolltlng by this example, corrected
themselves, nnd there wa one who said
to the Prince, that in truth a man could
no1 bohandsomo without a largo nose,
but that femalo beauty was altnsmili..,-
different, and that a bcholnr who spoko
Urtck had told him that ho had read.
in uu uiu ureeK manuscript, that tho
beautiful Cleopatra had the tip of tho
noso turned up.
Tho Prlnco nmilo a m agnlflcent pres

good news, and he sent nmbassadors to
demand MignonoV hand In niarrlaire.
They granted his request, and he went
more than three league to meet her. ho
anxious was ho to behold her; but
when he advanced to. kiss hor hand, the
hnchanter descended, carried off the
Princes before hU fur-i. .nri tr.t. .i...

turn to his kingdom till ho had recov
ered MlgnpiiP. He would not allow any
of his courtiers to follow him, nnd being
mounted on his good home he put the
bridle on his neck nnd let him take his
own road.
Tim hor?e entered n lnrgo plain, over
which he triiTciled all day without see
ing a ulnglo house. Tho master and tho
horso were botli dying of hunger, whon
at length In tho evening the Prlnco saw
a cavern, In which wad n light. Ho en

who appeared to bo moro than an hun
