The Hadlcals having failed to make
the laboring men believe that they do
not pay nny taxes, nnd that greenbacks
are good enough for them, while the
bond-holder gets gold, Imvo now turned
their itttantion to farmers, and com

that by HiU raeani their farms will be

O.v Wednesday night last tho Dem
ooraoy of Ilerwlck nnd surrounding
townships assembled In lnrgo numbors
to hear the Issues of tho campaign dis
cussed by Messrs. llobert F. Clark and
John G. Frcczo of lllooinsburg,
Tho meeting was organized by tho se
lection of M. E. Jackson, Esq., ns Pres
ident! Hudson Owen, .1. W. Dletrick,
Lewis Enkennd Isaiah llower, as Vlco
Presidents, mid J. S. Sanders nnd J. M.
Snyder us Sect claries,
On motion a committee consisting of
M. M. Traugh, Esq., and S. E. Smith
were appointed to wait upon tho speak
ers and Inform them that tliu meeting
was organized and prepared to hear
them.
Tlio President of the meeting then
stepped forward mid Introduced as tho
first speaker, Hubert F. Clark, Esq.
Mr. ( lark, who was a Whig, and when
tho parly dissolved, became a ltepubll
can, stated that he was now acting In
good faith with tho Democratic party
of the country lu order to savo tho Un
ion, nud that he was hero to-night to In
duce his fellow-citizens to aid In accom
plishing tlmt work, by tlio election of
Seymour and Ululr. His speech elided
hearty applause, and wo nro only sorry
that our limited spaco will not permit
us to allude to It lu detail. At Its con
sluslon, ho was complimented by botli
his Democratic nnd Republican follow
citizens. The speech will doubtless
have a good elfecl In this community.
Col. Freeze followed him with much
sound and practicable advice, and If
acted upon, will greatly increnso our
majority In tills county. Ho alluded to
the cxtriwagant and profllgato waste of
tho public moneys by tho Legislature of
this btato, by quoting largely from tho
Auditor General's rebort of 1807, and
which sot not only Democrats but He
publicans to thinking. Ho ulso read a
letter from tho Hud leal State authorities
at Harrisburg, wherein they state tlmt
they Intend to withhold tho usual np
proprlatlon for common school purpos
es, for tills county, becauso as they
claim, Columbia county is in debt to tlio
State. This is an outrags that should
bo resented by every friend of education
from one end of tlio county to tho oth
er. If Columbia county owes tho Stato
anything she Is able to pay It, and It Is
tho duty of the Stuto authorities to
mako her do it by law, and not adopt
tlio contemptible and miserable subter
fuge of robbing tho children of tho
county of tho money which has been
appropriated by tho Stato for their edu
cation. Tlio speeches were well received and
tho meeting adjourned with cheers for
the speakers, Seymour, lllalr and tho
Union. Jiencick Gazette.
