Topping Corn,
We Hurt well Imnllty aiUicrliiK to tlio

from tlmo Itumi'iiinrlul. In tlio i-iviturn
lirt of this Stntu, fur Imtnnco tlio prim
tliuof cuttlni; tho top Ktulks of corn
liiidKitlncd sostroiicii fooMiolil that It
limy bo siud to ho well nlch universal
whllo If wo vNU thu western part of thu
Btuto, wo find In ninny localities nt
least, tho pmetlco utmost equally prov
nlent, of cutting up from tho root nntl
(mocking.
Wo wcro brought up to top tho corn,
mid wo nlwnys stippomi;it to ho.on tho
whole, tho host method. Hut after
Icuiulng tho statements ot tlioso who
had always been accustomed to n (Hirer
ent method, nnd tho reason therefor,
wo wcro Inclined to think wo wcro
wioiigyuiil that tho practlcoof shocking
had many advantages over that of top'
ping. It has been tried by many farm'
its as im experiment, In this part of
the Htate, but cither from not being itc
customed to It, and ho of making moro
of It than thcro was any need of, It has
gcnerallly been abandoned for tho old
method of topping. Wo aro still In
olincd to think, however, that cutting
up from tho root and stocking has the
greater advantages, nnd that, If our far
iners who hnvo been accustomed to top
corn ull their lives, would try It long
enougli to get accustomed to It, they
would bo slow to go back to tlio old
method.
Allen, In his "American Farm Hook"
says: "Tho stalks of com ought never
to bu cut ubovctho ear, but nlwnys near
the ground, and for this ob vlotn reason
the sup which nourishes thu gruln Is
drawn from tho earth, and passing
through tho stem enters tho leaf, whero
a change Is effected, analogous to what
takes place In tho blood, when brought
to the surface of tho lungs In the ani
mal .system ; but with this peculiar dif
ference, however, that wlillu tho blood
gives out carbon aud supplies oxygen,
plants, under thu Influence of liirlit and
heat, glvo out oxygen nnd absorb car
bon. This change prepares tho mi for
iMiiclenatlon and conversion Into thu
grain. Hut tho leaves which thus ill
gfit the food for tho grain are nhovn it,
and It is whllo passing downward that
that thnchaiigoof sup Into grain iirln
tlpillly.takes place. If tho stalks bu
t ut nbovo tho car nourishment is at nn
end. It mayitheu bccoinoftrm and dry
but It will not Incrcaso In quantity,
whllo, If cut near tho root, it not only
appropriate tho snp already in tho plant
but It also absorbs additional matter
from tho atmosphere, which contributes
to Its weight and protection."
As already stated, many experiments
havo been made to test tho company
live advantages of the two methods,
but so far as wo know they all tend to
tho same results, that is, u gain from
flvo to ten bushels to tho ncre, gained
from cutting at tho root nnd stooklng,
over topping. Mr. Clark, of Northamp
ton, In this State, who tried tho thing
with great care, found that un aero of
tupped corn lost from six to eight bush
els of grain by tho process, while tho
loi of stover was also very considera
ble. Tho most experienced farmers nro
ciiroful to frecuru to whole of tho stover
and they would regard this topping
process as u great and unnecessary wuste
of u valuablo feeding substance.us much
so us If they should attempt to secure
their crop of timothy hay by "top
ping." There is, perhaps, a llttlo greater la
bor In husking corn cut aud utouked in
this way. Hut that is, after all, a small
objection compared with tho advanta
ges arising from this method,
We think It pays ,to cut corn-fodder
with tho hay-cutter before feuding out.
It is moro completely eaten up, while
the convenience resulting from It In
handling tho inanuro Is very considera
ble. Corn-fodder seasonably harvested
and properly stored is of great valuo
for lending through tho winter. Mum.

Ijauuu farm seems to bo attracting
thu attention of Agriculturists. Two
wealthy enterprising gentlemen of
Harrison County, Ohio, havo purchased
a township nix miles square in Nebraska
of government laud, and propose to con
vert tho whole Into ono grand farm of
S),01() acres. They Intend to inclose It
with a hedgoof tho osago orange, twenty-four
miles In extent, and will put up
cross hedges 12 miles In length. They
will litre all their labor and tho most
improved agricultural machinery, In
tending to put tho wholo farm Into
wheat, us fast as possible. It will re
quire about S),u(XJ bushels for thu seed
of such a farm. A colony is also being
formed in Chicago under Mr. Amos
Dullielil, fur tho purchase of another
township, in Nebraska for the same
purposes. Kiistern Florida Is also being
laid out In largo farms, for thu purposu
of cultivating fruits and early vegeta
bles for tho Northern markets. Jack
sonvillo, tlio chief shipping port of tho
State, Is but four duys from Now York
by steamer, and 'ess by railroad. It Is
estimated that fifty thousand young or
nngu and lemon trees havo been set
sinco tho war, nnd that ten thousands
uro now in bearing, In tho northern part
of tho State, tho fruit selling at il&to
J2u per thousand, as It hangs on the
tree, The settlers at the extreme south
ern part of tho Stato nro chiefly engag
ed In thu manufacture of tapioca, which
root, us well us alt other tropical plants,
grow thcro freely.
ClmiiRnl Seed WJicM
Tin-: Minnesota, Agricultural Society
has asked the aid of tho Agricultural
Department at Washington In proeur
lug now varlotlos of uprlog wheat.- It
appears that tho yield rapidly illrulu
lilies under their system of continuous
cropping from twenty-flve or thirty
bushels on new land to tweuty, fifteen,
and even ten bushels per acre. Tho re
suit i attributed to a "degeneracy In
tho vitality ot thebetd," rather than to
an exhaustion of fertility In the soil,
and it is thought thut If uw, good seed
of suitable, varieties could bu introduc
ed, tho Stato would bo benefitted to tho
extent of severul mllllUBS of dollars
yearly. Tho variety now relied upon
for tho main crop Is the Fife, and has
been used for many years. Tho Ciinadu
Club was formerly cultivated, but has
now entirely dUappcard. Tho Com
iiiUsIouer In his reply recognizes tho
Importance of tlio subject, and promises
to mako special cllorts to procure now
varieties of spring and winter wheat.
