(iitA.Mi ciiAiKii: or the second coups
DuniNti tlio night and day It rained
considerably, hut this proved to our
advantage, as under tho cover of tho
storm nnd darkness Hnncock united
his scattered Divisions, and prepared to
mako that magnificent assault which
not only mado his namo famous to all
time, but which resulted in tho llrst
real, substantial victory gained by our
arms miring the campaign. Wo moved
silently to tho left, nnd cro morning
dawned tho Second Corps was massed
In tho locnllty occupied by Moll's Di
vision two days before, our guns taking
their original position at what was
called tho "Brown" house. Hancock
had his head quarters In our Battery,
and in our front formed his cntlrcTCorps
for n charge. To tho left was tho Ny
ittver, tho Mnt, Tn, To, nnd Ny form
Ing tho Mnttapony orthogrnphlcally
and physically. For about 300 yards
from our battery tho ground Inclined
heavily downwards. At tho bottom of
tho slopo was n deep ditch from which
tho ground ascended to tho enemy's
works, nbout 300 yards further on, but
which wero hid from our position by a
comer of woods. Tho troops wero
formed nearly as follows : Gibbon's Di
vision on tho left, Barlow's In tho cen
ter, and Blmey's on tho right. Barlow
with tho first Division, had tho hardest
work to perform, not only bccaiuo tho
works In his front wero tho strongest,
but becauso ho had so much open space
to cross, in appcaranco ho Is a beard
less youth, but in action has tho dasli
and courage of a Murat. At tho begin
ning of tho war ho abandoned tho pro
fession of law In Now York City and
entered tlio army as a private, and by
sheer merit attained ids position as a
division commander.
Tho Held works In his front wero tho
strongest I ever saw. They wero at
least six feet high, regularly traversed,
and wldo enough for two men to rldo
over them abreast. They held forty
pieces of artillery, and wero guarded in
front by an abattis fifty feet wide, tho
jagged points of which in themselves
formed a serious obstacle. His Divis
ion was formed by throwing out n
heavy skirmish line, then three lines
of battle, tho balance of his command
belug formed In clo-o column, and so
arranged as to protect and support tho
flanks. Mott's Division, now reduced
to to a Brigado, and Carroll's Brlgado
formed tho reserve. I havo been thus
minute becauso tho chargo was tho
grandest over known, both In regard lo
numbers ami results. Besides, It was
mado by tho llowcrof our army against
Leo's finest Corps Stonewall Jack
son's. It was Just getting light, though a
heavy fog rested over tho earth, when
tho low command "Forward!" was
given. Tho men passed quietly over
three-fourths of tho dlstanco cro tho re
bel pickets fired and fell back. Our fel
lows then charged at tho run. nnd
gained tho works beforo their men wero I
renlly nwnko. Thoy l.ml only tlmu to
flro iv few rounds of canister. Unfortu
nately, nt tho sight of tho prisoners nnd
captured guns, tlio supporting columns
could not restrain themselves, and gavo
vent to their Joy by tho most noisy yells
imaginable, thus alarming tho enemy's
reserve, and warning them of our ad
vance. Had It been othcrwiso nothing
of any nccount would have been left of
Leo's nrmy, as their ccntro was pierced
and In a few moments moro wo would
havo been in their rear. But they wero
now nrouscd, and hastily drawing
troops from other points, endeavored to
retake their works. Tho Mississippi
Brlgado regained a portion of tho lino
In front of Blmey's Division, and nt
this point occurred tho hardest fighting
of tho day. Our men only retreated
about !10 yards,and though unprotected,
fought unflinchingly throughout tho
entlro day. So steady was our flro they
could not show their heads to tako
steady aim, nor could they retreat, as
our guns covered tho open space behind
them. Whero our lino joined theirs at
tho breast-works, tho men could touch
each other, and would flro over tho par
apet, muzzlo to muzzle. This continu
al and terrific roar of musketry was
kept up through the night in order lo
prevent tlio enemy from carrying off
some artillery which lay between tlio
two lines. Tosliow Its intensity I may
stato that oak trees eighteen Inches in
thickness, wero cut down by It.nnd that
tho bodies of men and horses lying bo
tween tho two lines wero so riddled as
to present sharpless nassos cut finer
than hash I
Onr men wero almost wild with Joy
over their successes, so unexpected and
so signal. Tho enemy's guns wero
quickly turned upon them, and aided
much In ropclling their assaults. Tho
zealous infantry becamo Impromptu ar
tillerists, ami desplto tho Manu
al, rammed into tho guns canister, solid
shot, shell, and in fact anything that
would enter tho muzzles. Sometimes
two or three loads would be tired at
once, and If u couple of men got knocked
over by the recoil, it was fun for I lie
remainder. Unii-oil to Miction primers,
elevating screws, ami other devlcns of
artillerist", they discharged the caution
by means of hot coals, or by poming
powder Into tlio vent, nnd then dis
charging their muskets into It ; and as
for range ami elovatlon--what did they
euro? 'twas noise-im they wanted.
I alterwards learned thoy produced
much consternation In tho enemy's
wagon train, parked a mile and a half
to the rear !
s Hancocks Head Quarters wero In
our Battery, wo saw nnd heard ail that
was going on, A moment after tho
charge, wo beheld a crowd of men com
ing confusedly to tho rear. 1 could
scarcely bollovo tho Corps had broken
espccally as thero had been hut littlo
lighting i hut the gray uniforms soon
dispelled tlio fear. They eamo by us In
thousands, and wo bacanio alarmed lest
they should escapo tho weak guard sent
with them. Among tho prisoners was
(Jen. Stuart and Ids stall', tho Gunend
In his haughty boring apperlng more
liken captor than n prisoner. Han
cock, who had known hlin In tho regu
lar nrmy, stepped up to him nnd ex
tending his hand, said good-naturedly
"Hownro you, Stuart?" "Genorl, Sir."
was tlio caustic auswcr, aud,ut tho samo
tlmo tlio oxtended hand was reftisod
".March this fellow on," thundered
Hancock, and 011 ho went with his
motcly associates.
A fow moments after Major General
Johnson was brought In. Ho turned to
his guard n ml courteously thanked them
for their kindness. "You nro damned
welcome," was tho blunt reply of tho
bergenia. Hancock greeted him cor
dlally, saying "lam glad to sco you,
Ned." "Under other circumstances,"
replied Johnson, "I would bo pleased
to meet you." Hnncock then said to
1111 aid In his dcclslvo manner. "Teh
graph to Wnrrcn nnd Burnsldoto at
tack at once, that I havo routed John
son, nnd nm going to roll upcnrly,-havo
taken their main lino 8000 prisoners
30 guns und 21 colors. Bequest Gen.
Wright to sond inorcIufurccsmchts,nnd
in tho meantime send In every nvnlla
bio mall, and give orders to hold tho
work at nil hazzards." During tho re
petition of theso orders, Johnson put
ins had upon ills heart ns though it
pained him ; nnd ns ho gazed upon his
fellow-prisoners, nnd tho earth-works
which but nn hour beforo wero under
his commnnd,heavy tenrs coursed down
his bronzed cheeks, nnd his whole
framo heaved with emotion. After ho
had Imbibed with hancock, thn latter
sent him on horse-back to Grant's head
quarters, accompanied by an nld.
Our men nnd horses wero sent lo tho
front to bring off captured guns, and In
many cases wo had to fight while hitch
ing to them. Tho Irish and Miles' Bri
gado each secured n gun after dark, by
slowly crawling up hi tho face of tho
enemy's lire, hitched ropes to them,
nnd then dragging llicni to tho rear.
Gen. W right promptly brought his
corps to support, and nfter nn excited
discussion between him and Hancock,
tho latter urging hnsto, his men wero
placed on tho right of our now line.
Wnrrcn gallantly, though vainly, as
saulted tho enemy's position. Ho and
his bravo men knew 'twas Impossible
to take tho works in their front, vet
charge after chargo was mado for tlio
sole purpose of keeping tho enemy em
ployed. As the Pennsylvania Hoscrves
held tho front line tho loss fell princi
pally upon them. Burnslde, ns usual
was too slow, and failed to co-onerato
at tho proper time. The batteries wero
moved up lo tho now position as soon as
gained, nnd during tho balance of the
day kept up a continual flro at short
range, some of them losing heavily.
Our chests werer filled with rebel am
munition, which, by tlio way, proved
belter than our own, und wo gained nt
least a week's supply. Thu prisoners.
about 8,000, wero massed in a field, und
as Grant nnd Mead passed, they gavo
them three tremendous cheers, caii-ing
