ArTKii tho mcinorablo Mlno Run
campaign tho army of tho Potomac
went Into winter quarters In tho vicini
ty of Hrandy Station, on tho Orango and
Alexandria R. R. Tho Rapldan, a
small but Impetuous stream, divided
tho two armies. The Winter and Spring
were spent In recruiting, reorganizing
and consolidating commands, and mak
ing the necessary preparations for a vig
orous Spring campaign. Since Gettys
burg, ten months before, no general en
gagement had been fought, n fact In It
self sufficient to sllcnco thoso who slan
dered Gen. M'Clellnn on iiccoun of his
"slowness."
Tho old First Corps, once command
ed by tho gallant Reynolds, and which
was nearly exterminated in tlio first
engagement at Gettysburg, was consol
idated with tho Fifth Corps, though re
taining Its badge. The men complained
bitterly of this arrangement, but were
too good soldiers to resist what was
manifestly for tho good of the service.
The Third Corp, Sickles', was joined to
the Second, commanded by Hancock.
French's Division, which Joined tho
Third Corps after the battle of Gettys
burg, was given to Sedgwick who com
manded tho Sixth. The breaking up
of tho Third Corps caused Inten.-o dis
satisfaction. Since Gettysburg there
had been a bad feeling between Meade
and Sickles, and the men under tho lat
ter believed their organization was sac
rificed through ill-will to their General.
This Corps, nlso, by means of an "Art
Union," and other associations among
tho Generals and Inferior officers, pre
sented n more formidable organization,
perhaps, than It was proper to have In
an army In the field.
At tlio opening of tho campaign,
therefore, tho Army consisted of three
Corps; the Second containing tho old
Third, and commanded by Hancock;
tho Fifth, containing tho First, ami
commanded by Warren ; the Sixth con
taining French's Division, commanded
by Sedgwick. In addition, lliinisldo's
old Corps tho Ninth which had long
rendezvou-ed at;Annapolis,aud to which
many new regiments and a Division of
negroes had been added, was ready to
Join us nt a moment's notice. Sykes,
French, Newton, and pome other Gen
erals of less nolo were relieved. Tho
Cavalry was consolidated under Sheri
dan, and a large Artillery Reserve
formed under Col. liurton. The Corps
averaged nbout 3(1,000 men, exclu-ive
of Artillery and Cavalry. Lee's Army
numbered oSflia men, foot, horse, anil
artillery, or less than one-third of our
force. Tho equipments and wprlt ilu
cor) of our army were splendid, the
ten months of comparative inaction
having disposed officers and men to
wards an active campaign.
Monde commanded the Army under
tho supervision of Grant. Tho presence
of tho latter excited no ciithusla-m. Tho
Army of tlio Potomac having been led
successively by M'Dowell, M'CIellan,
Pope, llurnstde, Hooker, mid Meade,
would not go Into exstacles over tho
Lieutenant General until ho had proved
his title (o their love In their presence.
While giving him full credit for his
achievements!!! the West.tliey believed
he would find a more stubborn foe in
the rebel Armyof Virginia Mian he had
fouu d We-t, and a nioro skillful Gen
eral in I than ho found In Ilntgg or
Peiiiberfiin.
The forward movement commenced
on the third or May, ISIil j a few days
later than Hooker commenced likClinn
cellorsville movement In In;:), and nix
icicAn later than M'CIellan commenced
his campaign of '(!:!, the lateness of
which was -o much censured by news
paper tactician-. The utmost caution
was observed to prevent thu enemy
from dl-coverlng our movements, and
no huts or other material wero allowed
to bo burned, as that would attract the
enemy's attention. .lust belbrostartlng
an appropriate order from Gen. Meade
was read to the troop-. It was temper
ate in tone, and avoided the bombast
generally used on micIi occasions. Du
ring the night the Army was massed at
Intercut fords on theltapldau, ready to
pusli os'er tlio river on the appearance
of daylight.
On Wednesday the Itb, our Corps,
Hancock's crossed tho the Itnpidun on
pontoons at Ely's Ford, without oppo
sition. Wo wero all hiirprl-cd at this,
because the river formed u splendid lin
of defence. Leo was evidently saving
his small tinny for hard work else
where. Our road look us over the
Chancellorsvillo battle-ground, and by
a wonderful coincidence wo parked our
Mattery on tho same ground where ex
actly one year before wo were In line of
battle engaging the enemy. The "-pot
was full ol Interest. At this point bat
tery after battery had been ma-id,
the horses sent to tho rear, and en
trenchments made of logs,lliiiber-che-ts
knap-sacks, dead horses, and whatever
else would stop a bullet or shell
Hero the gallant Whipple fell, nnd her
the enemy mndo so many desperate at
tempts to break our lines. A few hun
dred, yards to tho front wero the ruins of I
the Chancellor hoiisoand over thu wholo
country was scattered the usual diln-U
of a battle-field. Tho enemy had lev
elled tho entrenchments after Hooker's
retreat.
Thu troops wero in motion at day
light of Thursday, tlio ."illi. Tho day
was lino though intensely hot. Our
Corps, leaving tho main road marched
In u southerly direction, passing by
some ore-mines nnd u dilapidated fur
nace. Wo soon halted and formed n
lino of battle, but shortly afterwards
countermarched. Our orders had been
to push on to Shady Clrovo Church,
whero wo expected to connect our lines
with the rcstof tho Army. Grant hav
ing successfully crossed tho river, do
