IlL'T littlo has been said on this sub'
Ject of lato years, nnd wo trust there is
moro appreciation felt of tho rights of
ownership among tho community than
formerly. This result, so far as it has
extended, Is probably owing to tlio fact
which Is becoming moro generally
known and admitted, that fruit, like
other crops, requires care, labor andox-
penso for its production. Tno timo
wns when In rough nnd uneducated
neighborhoods, all tho nccessiblo fruit
was regarded as n sort of common plun
der, and It wns considered hardly nec
essary oven to ask tho owner for tho
privilege of tilling pocket or basket,
whether In day timo or In tho darkness
of night. This nge, wo are glad to say
passed away, and gavo placo to tho sec
ond era, known strictly as that of steal
ing, when tliofruit wns taken only in
tho dark, or when tho owner had gone
from home. AVo aro sorry to say that
this era seems to bo wonderfully pro
longed, and wo linvo by, no menus en
tirely got rid of It. Hut public opinion
Is Improving oven In this respect, and
tho moro Intelligent do notsoo wherein
it Is better to strip ntlno young tr co of
n crop of delicious pears than to break
into a granary and carry off a bushel of
loin adozon pullets. Indeed, it usually
happens that tho fruit has cost moro'
timo nnd care, nnd perhnps moro money
than tho grain nnd poultry.
Wo havo already stated that littlo Is
now said on this subject, but wo know
tho evil still to bo a formida

planting tho best fruit trees for fear of
those animals, which aro to them moro
formhlablo than unruly street cattle,
known by tho nnmo of vngrnnt boys,
Wo havo been apprehensive that tlio
general sllonco on this subject has not
been favorable to tho Improvement of
public opinion and wo cannot havo n
thorough euro until public opinions be
comes enlightened. It was only n few
months ago that wo had the best pear
troo In our garden entirely stripped of
Us crop in a single night. Suspecting,
from soveral circumstances, Including
Ids tracks In tho soft soil, tho man who
did it wo sent n servent immediately
lo inquire of him If ho had nny pears to
soli, aware that ho cultivated none of
his own. Wo knew that If ho wcro
innocent, ho would merely say no, nnd
think nothlugfurther ofthoinnttcr, but
if guilty, ho weuld know by tho In
quiry being mado nt thnt timo that ho
had certainly been detected. Tim res
ult was, that although a near neighbor
ho avoided us for tho next six weeks.
I'ossibly this hint may bo of use to
others who aro similarly nnuoyc-d. Hut
tho beat euro, in connection with nn

ness on tlio part of tho thief, that tho
wholo community will bo against him
