Wr. nrosont 3 o'clock on tho morning
of August 31st, and anticipating tho
cold nnd cheerless rldo heforo us, I put
on two coats, two pairs of stockings,
pantaloons, and shirts. Leaving Guar
alula, on the outskirts wo crossed a
mountain stream hy n frail bridge, and
then began tho nscent. Hour after hour
wo tolled on, yet seemed to get no near
er tho summit. At times tho path was
not moro than eighteen Inches wide j
while on the one sldo a wall of perpen
dicular rocks roscnpparenlly to tho sky
and on thoothcr yawned unfulhomablo
abysses, tho sight of which mado tho
blood run cold to tho stoutest heart. In
places steps hail been cut Into tho solid
rock to enable tho animals to gain a
foot-hold, nnd It was wonderful to seo
how carefully and surely they picked
their way, when olio faNo step would
huvchurlcd them and tlielrrldors thous
ands of feet Into the ravines below. Wo
soon left tlio green valley of Chlnibo,
and late hi the day tho Increasing cold
ness of tlio nlr, and the absence of all
vegetation assured ns wo were Hearing
the aranul, or summit where tho path
cicsps the mountain.
At tills tlmo Alicia became too 111 to
be carried on tho Indian's back, nnd I
was compelled to placo her In front of
my saddle. To add to our difficulties,
tho hall and sleet from tho mountain
sldo blew In our faces with Indescri
bable fury, and despite tho vigorous uso
of whip and spur, It was with tho great
est dllllculty tlio poor beasts could bo
prevented from turning round In the
narrow path nnd retracing their steps.
We also dreaded to encounter tlio pow
erful blast that sometimes sweeps
through the uramil from tho valley be
yond, and which frequently attains
sufllcient force and fury to carry both
horso and rider Into tho ravine below.
Tired and exhausted, yet bearing my
precious burden, tho summit was gain
ed. Xovcr shall I forget the feeling of
nwo that crept ovor mo as I gazed on
tho panorama that presented itself. Tlio
pass Is about 14,800 feet above tho level
of the sea, and though nearly under tho
-qualor, Is only n few feet from tho
lino of eternal snow. Behind us lay
spread out tho lovely valley of Chlmbo,
its bright verdure relioving tlio eye as It
turned from tho sandy waste around
No human habitations exist for
miles on cither sldo, and vegetation

waste a bleak desert among tho clouds
unenlivened by the chirp ofn bird, tho
hum of an Insect, or n blado of grass;
whllo far and wldo aro scattered tho
bones of men, women and children,
who have either perished in tho paago
or eiso were slain for lust or revenge.
Turning from this sceno tho cyo seeks
Chimborazo king of mountains and
monarch of this wilderness whose
mighty form reaching tho skies Is fur
ever clad in glittering robes of snow,
which sparkle in tho situ like n huge

Xo wonder the poor Indian shivers
with fear, and muttering a prayer, tells
ills beads as lie passes tills spot,
nzes on tho grinning skulls that lino
his way sees tho devolution caused by
those mighty convulsions lo which
Chimborazo was onco subject, beholds
tho dazzling masses of snow, and Just

IMrissns KutTOitsi-Agood many names
aro being discussed by tho newspapers,
as candidntts for tho Democratic nomi
nation. Somo of them I should hnrdl v
havo thought of as being considered by
our nartv such names for Instance as
Judgo Chase, and Mr. Stmibcry I when
wo nave many eminent ucinocrms who
would tako tlio nomination and bu pop
ular and uvallablo candidates.
Pleaso let us havo vour opinion on
tho presidential qucstoln.
m iwiiiiu.ii.
Tun Convcuttuii'lMf is so near at
hand that speculation Is hardly useful.
Wo presume eight or ten names will bu
submitted to the Convention, hut wo
greatly doubt if Judgo Chase's namo
will bo ono of them. Wo know of no
delegation that Is for him, nnd of no
slnglo member of any one that Is for
him. His nomination Is hardly among
thu possibilities.
Whllo wu havo many able men In our
ranks, there aro nono who stands out so
prominent, ns to make tholr selection
by tho Convention certain or even pro
bable. The opinion of tho writer Is
that wo should put on for President n
first class statesman and for Vice Pre-l-dent
nu nbla nnd brilliant soldier. Our
pet ticket is
For Presldunt
IIOHAT10 HF.YMOl'll, XeW York.
For Vice Picsldcnt
(MIX. FRANK P. BLAIIt, .Missouri.
lf,however,thu Convention should se
lect Gen. Dlx, of Xuw York, who Is
both a soldier and statesman, then u
civilian might goon for Vlco President.
Or If Mr. Pendleton is selected, then n
soltlier should bo Joined with him. Gen.
Hancock, Senator Hendricks and Gov.
Knglish are also spoken of. They aro
;ill able men, Infinitely superior to
Grant, In nil such qualifications as tire
required In a Pre-ldcnt of tho t'nlted
Slates.
Hut while wo havo our preferences,
whoever Is nominated by the Conven
tion will havo tho earnest and constant
support of Tin: Columiiian. Whether
tlio nomination is mado by a Xntlonnl,
State or County Convention, wo hold
that It Is binding upon thu party which
It roproscnts.colleetlvely and Individual
ly ; and no man can bolt a nomination
so regularly made and claim to retain
his placo In tho party. Support ol tho
organization and of regular nominations
Is vitally essential to nieces', and to
that, as members of the party, our pri
