Some demonstrations of dissatisfac
tion induced Penroso to leavothu Chair,
nnd Mr. Pearson wns then elected Spea
ker, tho majority of the Senate being
nntl-Democratlc. As soon as possible,
tho opposition Senators from Phlladel
phla, Hnnnnand Wngner, wero sworn
lu, nnd being tho minority candidates,
the gross outrage stirred the hearts of
the people. On motion, Hon. Charles
Drown was permitted to speak, nnd
suspecting the gathering storm, Speak
er Pearson called Gen. Rogers to tho
Chair, mid left thu Chamber. There
were, howover, no threats of personal
violence, nor were there nny armed
men In or about the Legislative Halls,
except, perhaps, tho "Halifax Bullies"
of tho Radicals. Rut tho wicked lleo
when no man pursucth, and "Penrose,
Ilurrowes, Stevens nnd Fenn, left tho
Senate Chamber through tho back
window."
Thus both Houses were, oi the first
day of meeting, permanently and regu
larly organized. Tho House, by tho
election of William Hopkins, Demo

the election of Mr. Pearson, n Whig.
In that result, which Indicated thu
state of majorities In each IIou,u, all
thu citizens and spectators ncipulesccd ;
and nil difficulty and danger seemed to
bo over, even although thu Rump llolt
ers still met In out-of-the-way houses
and places. Hut tho conspirators were
not satisfied, and were proparing anoth
er scene lu thu drama, and bringing
other actors upon tho stage, to strut

overawe tho Hopkins or majority
