O.Nt: day, while Iloseken was dress

gold hanging round her neck by a silk

as she hud seen in the hands of the f.ilry
dwarfs. Klllu seemed sorry at its be

ill the garden. Hut Hoseken watched
her, nnd soon found Ihntshu went every
afternoon to sit by hersulf In a shady

she hid herself to seo what tho child
did there, nnd to her great wonder

slie plucked one of tlm roses thut grew
around them, anil lucathcd gently up
on it, and mid, "Take this for my-nkel
It will now keep fresh for whole

Then Hoseken loved hor llttlo Kllle
more than ever; and when sho found
she spent some hours of almost everj
day with tlm elf, she ucd to hide her
self and wntch them without being
-een ; till one day, when (los'itmcr was
bearing her little friend through the
air from tree to tree, her mother was so
frightened less her child should fall,
that she could not help screaming out ;
and Gossamer set her gently on the
ground, nnd seemed angry, nnd flew
away. Hut still she used sometimes to
come nnd iluy with her llttlo friend;
and would soon, perhaps, have done -o
the same is before, had not Iloseken
one day told her husband tho whole
story: for she could not benr to hear
him always wondering nnd laughing nt
their llttlu child's odd ways, and say
ing be was sure there was something In
the grove that brought them no good.
So, to show lilm that all .-hu said was
true, she took him to see Kllle and the
lulry ; but no i-ooner did OosMimer
know Hint lie was there (which she did

into a raven, and flew off into tbegrovi .
Ho-cken burst Into tears, mid so did
Kllle, for she know-she should see'licr!

restless and bent upon following up his
search after the fairies, so when night
came he stole away towards the grove.
U hen he came to it nothing was to be

grove, nnd the hovels; and the thunder
rolled, nnd the wind whittled.. It
seeme 1 that nil nbout him wn angry,
so l.o turned houiewnrds, frightened nt
what he had done.
In tho morning all the neighlsirs
flocked nround, asking ono anither

night could mean; and when tlm looked
about them, their trees seemed blighted i
nnd tho meadows parched, tliu streams I

Hut yet they nil thought that, some-
how or other, thogrovo hud not near so

Strange storieji wero told : how one had

seen thogrovo as It were nllvo with
