The grand results of the late flections which liuve revived tho drooping for tunes of the. Democratic party, and have added to their Invincible stead fastness tho ardor and tho confidence) of victory In the contest approachlng, havo been due, in no inconsiderablo degree, to reinforcements from tho ranks of our opponents, but these- very reinforce ments,'ns well as tho putting forth of our own "trength, to which they are chiefly due, liavo been the direct conse quence of tho systematic mid well di rected energies of workers throughout the country, who havo labored while other slept j who see to-day tho first frulta of their labor, and whoaro ready and eager to pass forward to grander triumphs and the final victories which will crown their noble toll, The samo energy put forth now will bears fuller harvest next Fall. The tide Is with us to-day, against which wo havo been struggling for long and weary years. Taken at tho Hood, It icilt lend us on to victory. Thl9 is more necessary now than ever, for our opponents, rendered desperate by their recent defeats, have resolved to rule or ruin," and in order to retain power are violating tho fundamental principles of our Government. Not oulyaro legally olectcd Senators and members of tho House of Representa tives arbitrarily deprived of their seats, but ten sovereign States are disfranchis ed, tho President is in effect deposed, and arbitrary despotic power ,placcd in tho hands of ono man from whom there Is no appeal. Kvcn the Supremo Court is not safe from these lovellor3,and they now aim to make its decisions subservi ent partisan purposes. Afterseven years' trial, our oppncnU havo not only failed tt restore the Union, but are dully add ing to our debts and tuxes, and surely sowing thu tecds of another civil war. Thcro Is but one way. Organize, organize, organlzo, anil organize now. Experience, has taught that in tho long intervals between political campaigns), there is no Instrumentality so potent as a sound Democratic newspaper, which weekly comes to tho home fireside, and there, with truth and cogency, scts forth the facts of tho country's condition, and applies to them Democratic principle-". No power Is t bo compared to this for making Democratic votes. Ono dollar spent for such a weekly visitor does more than ten dollars spent In any other way. Such Is tho opinion of leading statesmen of our partj j such has been the successful practice of our opponent'. Can they not bo outdone with their own weapons, by getting together tho active Democrats of each District, by dividing up tho territory to bo canvassed, by sco- ing to it that every Democrat whotakes no paper now, subscribes to ono j by in duclng every doubtful voter to sub wrlbe, and those who are unwilling or too poor to subscribe, supylplng by gratuitous distribution, raising a fund among zealous and well-to-do friends for the purpose. HltoHT time since wo published an article on the subject of mall service In Mt. Our article was not written in tho Interest of any pers m or locality, but was Intended to represent tho whole subject fairly from an inde pendent point of view. And wo would very willingly Imve published nny pro per communication sent to us ou thu sumo subject, whether In nccordanco u Ith our views or not. Hut wo havo been taken to task by tlui Post Muster tit Mortlansvlllo (Hear Hun) through tho columns of tho Jl- publican, and our article denounced by li t tn as unfair nml untitle. Wo bellcvo this worthy gentleman will conclude, before wo are dono with him, that ho has madoa tlotiblo .ulstnko a mistake in denouncing us without cause, and a mistake also in selecting tho columns of P. John's newspaper for his commit iilcutie.il. We havo taken time to obtain exact Information as to changes in tho Mor- dniisvlllo Post Olllce and now present it below to our readers. Every fact stated. can bo verified by official papers lu tho Post Olllco Department. Hy act of Congress of Aug. 3 lS3l,con sollilating former pot-routo laws, a mall route was established from Ulooms burg by way of Mordaiisvllle, Mlllvlllc, Chestnut Grovound Morcland, to Mun ey. Mordamvllle P. O. was discontinued Dec. 6. ISol upon communication to Dc parttiicnt by P. M. at Chestnut Grove that the Income of P. M. from the olllce was but fl per year, and that tho olllco was badly kept, in a shed etc., 13th July 18M, Post Olllco' named "Hear Hun" established at Hear ltun and Joseph E. Sands appointed Post Master. Tho Petition on which this ac tion was had, asked for tho new olllco to bo called "Mount Pleasant -Mills, on the route from Illoonisburgto Muncy." It was signed by citizens in tho vicinity of Hoar ltun mid not by persons at Uloomsburg, and was endorsed by Henry M. Fuller, Memberof Congress. 3 May 18-jO, tho office was changed in location from Hear Hun to Mordnns villo and tho old namo "Mordansvillo" restored. Wni, Hutchl-on was appoint ed P. M. This was done upon Petition of the inhabitants of Mount Pleasant Interested In tho olllco. 12th April 1SG0 upon Petition John F. DIettcrich appointed I. M" nt Mordans villo in placo of Mr. llulchlton, deceas ed. 31st. July 1601. DIettcrich was re moved find Sands appointed as P.M; since which time thu olllce has been kept at Dear Hun under tho name of "Mordansvillo." Thlschnngo was miulo upon tho following papers and endorse ments: 1. Petition for Sands ; tho offico to bo called "Mount Pleasant Mills." This petition was endorsed and the change recommended by "P. John, Editor lie- publican, William Roblson" and others at Bloonisburg. It was also endorsed as follows: "I concur; F. Stewart, Delemite to Chicuuo Convention :" "I concur; II. U. Wright." 2. Letter of P. John to Hon. W. W, Kctcham, dated "Olllce of tho Ilepubll can, March 29th, 1801," in which ho says: "I am requested to write n line ttecempnnyingthIsPetltion, Mr.Sands is ono of our working men. Tho present Post Master keeps a one- horse hotel. A few nominal lie. publicans who like strychnine whiskey aro petitioning to havo him retained, but I tell you that tho interests of the party require that ho be turned out. Yours etc. P. John." Tills concludes tho history of the Mop dansvlllo 1'oit Office, except that a year ago or upwards u Petition signed by a largo number of citizens of Mount Pleas ant was forwarded to tho Post Master General asking for the reestablishment of the offico at old Mordansvillo where it was kept beforo tho chango mado in 1601 Hut there Is a fact to bo mentioned in this connection concerning tho discon tinuance of tho Post Offico at Wclllvers ville. That office was established May 11, IMS, and was discontinued Aug. 22, 1SC0, when tho offico at Eyer's Grovo Ti'as created. As wo stated in our for uier article, the people at Eyer's Grovo did not ask nor deslru that tho Weill veravillu office should bo abolished. All they desired was an offico for them selves as the mall was carried by their doors at any rate, on its way to Mill vllle. Hut wo now ascertain that (hero was a paper on file at Washington which did tho business. It was an application for tho discontinuance of tho Welllvers- vlllo olllce from tho -Mall Contractor uml Post Ma-ter on route 23i8, from Uloomsburg to Sereno, and was signed by Albert Hunter, contractor; by F. P. Musters, P. M at Sereno; W. II. Hay man, P. M., at loin, and by Joneph 7,'. iS'i(, . if., at Mordaiufllc, (Hear ltun). Tho Department agreed to this application becau-o the Kuvcnuo from the otlko was small ; the compensation of tho Post Muster for 1601 being only four dollars. It appears, then, that tho chango of tho Mordansvillo offico to Hear ltun lu 1801 was mado at tho Instance mainly f P. John mid of Frank Stewart of Herwlck, (Republican Delegato to Chi cago;) that II. 11. Wright, M.C. (bogus Democrat) assented to it; that F, John backed tho petition, sent it on to Wash ington himself, wrote a letter urging tho chango for political reasons, and de nounced tho Republicans of Mount Pleasant who opposed tho change as ad dicted to strychnlno whisky. And yet Mr. Sands denies that P. John "had a hand" In tho transaction I In fact, he had not ono but both hands in it, and it foul pen besides. Tho Post Master thinks It Important to statu that Col, Freeze drew n petition for his Hear ltun offico nt ono time, though neither ho nor any ono elso ut Uloomsburg signed it. Hut that was away back In 18o5 uien there teat no tjA Jlce at Mordimiitlt, It hud been tllscou tlnued lu tho previous year uml thero tus no question about It pending. Tho writing a petition wo a small favor hardly worthy of remark, and certainly did not commit tho writer In after times to tho fortunes of Hear ltun. Every statement lu our former nrtlclo was substantially true ami fairly given, except tho one that Col, Hcrantoii was concerned lu tho removal of the- olllce. In that single particular (which was not underfill) wo were In error, running into puiir. iu concert wuu out of ofllc. and loaflujr on In Yunkoe ralwaoa John, tiro Post Matw luu Umj. compelled us to look up tho facts of tho case fully nml present them to tho pub lie. From them It Is now to bo under stood that Mr. Hands Is responsible In part, for tho discontinuance of the Welllversvlllo offico; that by thdactof Congress of 18ol the mall route Is fixed by old Mordansvillo and not by Hear Hun, (which Is two miles or more oh the route;) and that tho chango In tho location of thu olllco In 1801 was a party nieasuro engineered by P. John of tho Jlepublicun who now Impudently de nies his agency thrrtln. It Is thus plain that tho Post Master (who lsu ri'spectit hlc man) has damaged his caso by an Indiscreet defence. Wo suggost to hlni that tho nm-t Judicious and best thing ho can do Is to cut loose altogether from P. John and thus relievo Hear Hun from a great deal of odium and himself from a most unfortunate connection. Auditor Qcucral's Report. So far as tho intrinsic interest of tho facts is concerned upon which Mi-s Mtihlbach bases her story, this latest production of her pen may bo said to rival any of its predecessors. Nowhere In all history is thero a trag edy so sweet and sad as that of Jose phine woman, wife, empress, and widow. Tho skilful romancer has gathered tho facts from all known sources, nnd woven them Into a com- pact and gleaming web. Miss Mulil- bacli is accused of high coloring : but what tints can bo too bright or too dark by contrast for tho light nnd shade of euch a marvellously chequered career as Josephine's ? This lalo Is well trans- luted, and tho graceful, characteristic stylo of tho author duly preserved. In the nrt of gently beguiling tho reader from pago to page by thocharm of stylo Miss Muhlbach has no superior living ; though, In this Instance, tho dramatic arrangement of tho stirring incidents Is so ingenious and captivating that it moro barren stylo would still havo left the work highly interesting.
