acts under the Lincoln administration.
On account of tlio storm of the prece-

tho gathering was a smaller ono than It
would havo boon under dltl'erent cir

ptrlt exhibited was most harmonious.
Mr. P. C. Wright, of New York city,
was appointed Chairman of tho meet lug,
and Mr. Samuel Pike, of Kouthiiort,

The Chairman read a letter from lion.

expressed his approval of the objects of
thu proposed convention, and recom
mended, in order to inakoltaslargeand
succe-sful as possible, that it should lie
postponed until spring, when the facili
ties for travel would be much increased.
Similar letters wero read from a mini
her of gentlemen In various parts of the
country, all of whom were unwillingly
detained from tho meeting.
A conversational dlcu-lon then took
place between those pre-ent. It was
reed to by all that the Intended con
volition was very nccOs-ary, and thai
the time for holding it had arrived. It
was felt Hint an ellort should bo made
to liubll-h to the world the true facts lit
connection witli the Impri-oniiienl and
confiscation of property of many 'iti-
zens of the Union, anil to reiuos'o from
their shoulders the unju-t obloniiy
which now rested upon them. The gen
eral sentiment was in favor of postpon
ing tlio convention till about the mouth
of May.
It was finally agreed that a commit
tee of gentlemen from various State.

other necessary arrangements for it.

It is said that an entcrpri-itig Yan

black cats, Intending to go into tlio fur
trade. Tills reminds n of a similar
experiment, which was made many

returning to tlio mainland, report the
alarming stnto of iilliiirs. During the

Tho writer of tho "Pen and Ink
Sketches," of which we have already
mado mention, lu tho West Florida
Commercial, mentions an Interesting
little incident connected with tlio ro
treat southward of Mr. Davis and ills
Cabinet, after tho capitulation of Gen.
Johnston,
Tho party had stopped for rest nt tho
roidoucoof n gentleman near tho Cataw
ba niver. Tho writer proceeds :
His dwelling, beautifully situated
ond surrounded by ornato and cultiva
ted grounds, was readied about four
o'clock p.m., and tlio charming lady of
tho mansion, witli that earnest sympa
thy and genorous kindnoss which Mr.
Davis In misfortune never failed to ro-
celvo from Southern women, soon made
every man of tlio party forget his cares
and fool, for a time at least, "o'er all
tho Ills of life victorious."
After such slight renovations and
changes of their travel-soiled toilets as
circumstances permitted, and nn hour
of refreshing rest, it was a novel sight
to seo Mr. D.ivls and Mr. lleg.ni, with
a little son of their kind hast as their
ally, playing an animated and well con
tested game of marbles against his sec
ond son, a boy of somo ten yean, sup
ported by Gen. Ureeklnridgu nud an
other Cabinet officer. Tho game lasted
nearly nn hour ; and notwithstanding
tho skill of hlsoppoiicuts, Ilrecklnrldge,
who plays tho best game of marbles of
any leading public man sinco Judge
Marshall, and who had his usual good
luck, came off victorious.
The youngsters, two bright, intelli
gent Southern boys, will never forgot
that ardently disputed game of mnrhlci
with .Mr. Davis, who, to their Intliilto
delight, seemed as much nt homo with
all the words of caution ami command,
from "knuckle down nt taw" tu "rum
dings," a tlieiusclvis.
