In Pennsylvania the Susquehanna
Hlver Is known nnd distinguished by
tho Xorth Ilranch and tho H'v llranch.
Tho North llranch, however, which
rises In Otsego county New York, Is
the principal stream, and originates tho
name; tho West llranch being but an
eflliient, rising In the mountains of
Clearfield county nnd the springs of
Cambria, and comes to bo known as
the West llranch of the Susquehanna,
after It has attained considerable size.
It receives several large streams before
it pours Its waters into the Susquehan
na proper, at Northumberland, among
which are Muncy Creek, Loyal Sock,
Lycoming, Pine Creek, and others of
les-er -Ize; whereby, Inn course of
something over two hundred miles
among the mountains of tho Interior,
its volume of waters havo heen swollen
so as to equal, utmost, those of tho
North Hranch. Of the North llrnnch
an eloquent writer observes :
"Oilier streams have their beautiful
points nnd Intervals, but the Susque
hanna has every form of beauty or .sub
limity that belongs to rivers. We hive
seen them all Connecticut, Hudson,
Delaware, Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri
there Is nothing like tho Susquelian
on this continent. Its peculiar charac
ter depends upon its origin in tho New
York meadows, Its passago through the
magnificent Pennsylvania mountains,
and tho richness of tho valleys that He
between those mountains. JO very where
its courso is deflected; It begins a wood
ed lake; It winds wlt'i the character of
a limped brook by meadows nnd over
sliver pebbles; it makes Its way through
mountains; it loiters restlngly by their
ba-e; it sweeps in broad curves by the
valleys. Its vast width In its mad
spring freshets, when swollen by the
nielten snows, It ruhes from the moun
tains with Irresistible force, sometimes
causing frightful inundations, leaves,
with Is fall, island after island in its
mid-channel, of the richest green and
most surpassing beauty ; while thoe
pa-ages through tho mountains afford
points of scenery far finer than any one
would believe them to be from any de
scription, If they have not seen them."
It is not generally admitted which
valley bears off tho palm of beauty.
The denizens of each are strenuous In
the praUe of their own locality and,
point with exultation to many an his
torical spot. Tlio counties properly In
clude within The Forks of the Susque
hanna should perhaps lie south of a
Hue, to lie drawn from the west lino of
llnton county at tho river, to the point
where the North Hranch strikes the
Pennsylvania lino ; and would include
Clinton, Lycoming, Hradford, Sullivan,
Wyoming, Luzerne, Columbia, Mon
tour, and Northumberland.
No region of Pennsylvania has been
written over wltli so much euro and
vim and zest. Tlio historian, tlio poet,
and tho rnmancist have labored to Illus
trate Its valleys, and to hoiguten, If
possible, the charms or Its scenery.
Comprising many rich anil populous
counties, to which, years ago, the
hardy settlers Uocked for cheap land-,
the pleasures of- tits cha-e, and the
fishing-rod, Its local history is pecu
liarly rich. A fierce warfare raged be
tween our own people for tlio posses
sion of its rich alluviiils; niiilat last the
Legislatures of the several States
wero obliged to Interfere to stop the
filed. Within its borders oceiired
some of tho most bloody battles in
which the white and red man con
tended for life and subsistence. Fierce
and protracted wero the struggle-;
and wo find marks of them not only on
their very site-, but so tenacious was
tlio hold of the Indian, that he has In
delibly stamped his nomenclature upon
almost every ono of tho streams, the
mountains, tho passes, and tho valleys.
Hero no cockney has built his Lou
dons, Liverpool, or Manchester:; no
matter-of-fact emigrant from "dor fa
derland" has be-Rhiiied or be-Rlioued
our most beautiful river; nor have the
creeks and valleys to play second flddlo
to soitiu I'.uropean locality. Their mu
sical, aboriginal names still cling to
them, and will cling to them for over.
Hark to tho music of a few of them ;
Wo 'have Wyaluslng, Tiinkhaiinock,
Lackawanna, Wyoming, Nautlcoke,
Catawlssa, Mahoning, Shaniokiii, Cltil
lisquaque, Muncy, Loyal Sock, Lycom
ing, Towauihi, Klttaniug, Shcshcquiii,
and many others.
Tlio Indians seem to have called what
is now Towauda, "Awaudioj" and per
haps what Is known as Pino Creek Is a
little easier of pronunciation lli.iu tliu
aboriginal "Tladaghton." So, also,
what Is known as Muncy Creek was, In
the native dialect, "Occohpocheny,"
and by some of the tribes was called
" Longeserango." The name Muncy
was doubtless given by the whites an
easier of pronunciation, or because tho
tribes Inhabiting tlio region were called
the " MoiiH'ys," or Wolf tribes.
Lycoming was an Indian, "Loco-
inlck ;" ami ".Stonchnugo" Is by somo
given as tho Indian name of Loyal Sock.
It, as well as Muncy, may havo been
known to different tribes by different
names ; for Loyal Sock Is undoubtedly
Indian, and signifies "Middle Fork"
the explanation being that It enters thn
Susquehanna about midway between
Muncy Creek and Lycoming Creek,
There Is rea-ou In this; mid the author

Naullcoko nod I.ackawuua aro most
certainly Indian, ami J am Informed by
a Welshman that tlio roots of both
words nro certainly Welsh, llo ex
plains them to havo reference to streams
of water, In his own language, anil their
peculiarities answer exactly to tho-o of
tho streams which they hero designate.
It Is Impossible to say If the meaning of
tho words In both languages Is the
same; but It Is a little rcmnrknble, that
In both, tho words should havo refer
erence to water, rather than woods,
fields, or mountains.
