Philology Is derived from two (Ireek
words nnd Its primary .signification Is
"it lovo of words, or n deslro to know
tho origin und construction of lan
guage." What wo havo to say upon It,
will Ho within fills' moro restricted
meaning. Of tho hypotheses of philol
ogists, as to whether our first parents
conversed only In nouns and verbs, or
whether gifted by Heaven with a full
and complete language, wu shall not
speak. Their subjects of conversation
could not huvo been extensive, and wo
aro inclined to the opinion, that the
same Power which enabled Adam to
name tho nnlmals, miraculously sup
plied him with whatever word was nec
essary to express an Idea. lltil as ideas,
objects and relations multiplied, words
were needed, and thus language grew ;
anil wo see to this day, new words
brought Info use by thu necessities of
art, tr.vlu or science.
The basis of our language Is thu Sax
on, from which It is sometimes called
by that name, furnishing, as it docs,
about one-half of mir vocabulary,
whlle'thu other half is liiadu up from
six or eight different stocks, among
which we find tho Welsh, Norman, Lat
in, French and CJreck, Interspersed
with constant accessions from modem
languages. It is owing to tills fact, that
tho Kngllsh Is so rich and copious, mak
ing nil tho world Its tributaries, adopt
ing incorporating and anglicising
whatever seems to -bo useful, necessary
or ornamental, In law, conierco or liter
ature. It is doubtless owing very much
to this fact also, that wo commonly set
at defiance all general rules for spelling
and pronouncing, as tho foreign peculi
arity will contlnuoto.stlck to tho adopt
ed word.
I'hls very dllllculty, or objection, If
you please, Is however, an advantage,
as It inevitably betrays tho.parentagoof
the word ; and from that'polnt, opens a
ast forest of philological walks In
which n student can amuso himself for
days, tracing out the signification, tho
derivation, and tho root of tho hidden
meanings, correcting old usages und
constructions, and learning new combi
nations nnd applications.
Tho pronunciation of a word will of
ten Indicate Its origin, but tho origin
will more frequently detcrmino tho pro
nunciation, as well as tho signification.
Take, as an example, tho word if o u n d.
It is pure Saxon, and brother to mich
Words as ground, hound, nounil, ete-,and
Is ofcoursopronounceil similarly. Tho
rule being, that the o, u, In words de
rived from theSaxon, retalnsltsorlglnul
sound of o, w, while In tho same way,
words In o, u, derived from the French,
retain tho sound of o, o, as In sou),
group, etc.
Again, a knowledgo of the root of
words Is almost indlspcnsablo to an
even tolerable conception of their pow
er. How many words nro used, daily,
hourly, that convey no definite idea
to tho mind? Few pcoplo know, or
euro to know, that tho word Jhsl means
primarily, "to hoist, to raise," so J:aat
cr, coming tlio third day from good Fri
day, commemorates tho resurrection,
and means "rising." Wct does not
signify merely, that place In thehorlson
where the sun disappears, but It brings
tho idea of "n decrease, n falling, a set
ting." -It is also pure Saxon, and Is
a much used affix, meaning "pluco;"
from this wo huvo Western, Northern,
Fastern and Southern.
In this view, therefore, the study of
science of words Is of tho utmost Impor
tance, ami ns no man can work to ad
vantage without being master of tho
tools ho uses, so neither can onu become
a powerful writer or speaker unless ho
makes himself thoroughly acquainted
with the language ho employs. Tho
study of Philology, therefore, not only
gives weapons to thoscliolar, tho states
man or tlio poet, hut It also sharpens
them, and nt tlio same time teaches how
to use them. I fa moro philological use
wero made of tho ancient authors read
in our academies and colleges, It would
bo to tho vast advantage of tho youn
men who leave them annually.
In connection with this part of tlio
object, and In Illustration of the vluw
we havojtist taken, a few observations
upon thesubject of "phonography" will
lmontirely appropriate. Tho word Is
of Greek derivation, signifying "to
write byfiound." l)y this system it is
attempted to do away with, what these
self styled reformers nro pleased to call,
our present absurd method of spelling
words, and to Introduce one, by which
every word shall bo spelled according
to tho sound. Let us examine this
modern Improvement.
We have said that tho proper com
prehension of the Anglo-Saxon depends
upon an acquaintance with tho lan
guages from which it Is derived ; and so
tho moro certainly wo can truce a word
to its original, tho clearer must bo our
conception of its meaning. There aro
no words really synonymous; there is
u shado of distinction between tlio elos.
est so-called synonyms, and a knowl
edge of tho root enables us to iiso them
with correctness nnd effect. Of course,
thu phonographic method changes the
spelling, and thereby removes tho hum
marks, If wo may lie allowed tho ex
presslon, by which wo nro guided In
our philological explorations.
