Hut Spitz grew old, and nis master no

often let htm sttlVer from hunger. At
last ho could bear It no longer, so ho
took to his heels and ran olf. On tho
mad he met n sparrow, thatsuld to him,
Whv are you so sod.my Menu V" "iio-

and have nothing to eat." "If that bo

a butcher's shop thu sparrow said to lite
diiL'. "Stand theru a Uttlo while, Trend
Spitz, till 1 peck you down it plccu of
meat." So tho sparrow percneu upon
tho shelf, and having first looked cuii
nlngly round and round about her, to
see If any one was there watching her,
she pocked amlscntchednt a beef-steak
that was lying upon the edge oi the
shelf, till at last down It fell. Then
Master Spitz snapped It up and scram
bled awav with It Into a corner, where
ho soon nto Hall up. "Well," said the
sparrow, "you shall have somo moro If
you will ; so come on to tho next sliop,
and I will get you tt mutton-chop."
When the dog had eaten this, too, tho
sparrow said to him, "Well, my good
friend, havuyott had enough now"."' "i
havu lmil plenty of meat," said he, "hut
1 should llko to have ti pleco of bread
to eat after It." "Como with me, then,"
aid tho sparrow, "and you shall soon
luivo 1 hat too." So she took him to a
baker's shop, and pecked at two rolls
that lay In thu window till they fell
down.
When those wero eaten, the sparrow
asked Spitz whether ho had enough
now. "Yes," said ho; "and now let
us tako n walk ulittluway out of the
town." So they both went out upon
tho high road; but as tho weather was
warm, they had not gone far before tho
dog said, "I am very much tired, I
should llko to tako n nap." "Very
well," said tho sparrow, "do.so, and In
the meantime I will perch upon that
bush." So Spitz lay down In tho road,
and fell fast asleep.
Whilst he slept, thero eatne by a cart

and loaded with two casks of wine.
Tho sparrow, seeing that tho carter did
not turn out of tho way, but would go

his whip, nnd drove his cart over tho
poor dog, so that tho wheels crushed
him to death. "There," cried tho spar

killed my friend Spitz I Now mind
what I say. This deed of thine shall
cost thee all thou art worth." "Do
your worst and welcome," said tho
brute.
Hut the sparrow crept under thu tilt
of tho cart and pocked nt tho bung of one
of tho casks till sho loosened it; and
then nil tho wlno ran out without tho
carter seeing It. At last ho looked
round, and saw that tho cart was drlp-

an unlucky wretch I am I" cried he
"Not wretch enough yet!" bald tho
sparrow, as she alighted upon tho head
of ono of tho horses, and pecked at him

tho carter saw this ho drew out his hat

meaning to kill her ; but sho now away

all tho wlno ran out.
When tho carter saw this, ho again
cried out, "MIserablo wretch that I ami"
Hutthosparrow answered, "Not wretch

"unlucky wretch that I am!" said he
"Not wretch enough yet I" said the

carter was mad with fury; and with
out looking about him, or caring what
ho was about, struck again at tho spar

miserable wretch that I am !" cried he
"Not wretch enough yet!" answered
the sparrow, as she Hew away; "now
will 1 plaguo and punish thee nt thy
own house." The carter was forced to
leave his cart behind him, anil to go
home overllowlng with rage and sor

"Alas," said ho to his wife, "what ill

Tho carter seeing that ho had thus
lost all that ho had, went down Into thu
