NO. XXVI.
Tin: foundling.
Not very many years ago, a vessel
set pall from a certain port In tho King
dom of Great Rrltlaln, bound for Now
York. Tho usual number of passengers
were on board, nil Intending to niako
tho United States their future homo.
They belonged to the several classes of
Lngllsh society ; and although at home
and after their arrival here, they would
not all perhaps mingle In tho same so
cial circle, yet on ship board for tho
most part all conventional distinctions
were disregarded.
Among them was a woman of good
birth, but in reduced circumstances,
who was coming to New York to meet
her husband who had preceded her n
few months, and having obtained a
situation, had written for his wife to
come on nnd rejoin him. She had with
her a Ilttlo daughter named Kllzubcth,
their only child, and less than a year
old. During the voyage the mother
sickened and died. Her little means
were only enough to bring herself mid
child to port, and the child thus thrown
upon the charity of the pa-sengers, was
"1
. ....
once adopted ny a man and liis
wlfo
named West, and cared for by them un
til the vessel reached Now York. The
father never came to claim his child,
nor was all Inquiry or search of any
avail to trace him.
Little Lizzie, therefore remained up
on tho hands of her father by adoption,
and was treated as one of his own chil
dren. The pas-cngers di-embarked,
each taking ids separate way In tho
wide world, and Mr. Wot hltu.-elf com
ing to Pennsylvania, settled in tho in
terior of the State, following the occu
pation of a day laborer for Ills support.
His family grow in size and expense,
and ids labors, burdens and cares also
increased. Lizzie happened one day to
attract the attention of an elegant and
wealthy lady, and ilnding upon Inquiry
that she was a foundling, offered to take
and rear her as her own child ; among
such associations as seemed more suited
to the delicate and ladylike perceptions
or the little girl, than thoso amidst
which her life theretofore had been
spent.
Mr. West was not anxious to part
with his little charge. Ho felt that her
influence was for good, and that there
was a superiority about her mind and
manners, born witli her, and pervading
all her thoughts and actions. Hut tlio
offer was a tempting relief to him, and
It offered superior chances to tho little
girl, which he thought ho had no right
lor her sake, to disregard. Ho too made
inquiries. lie found that Mrs. Milner
was wealthy, that she moved in the
best society of the town wherein she
resided, that sho was a lady of refine
ment and culture, and above all, she
was a Christian. After consultation
with his wife therefore, he determined
to leave the littlo orphan Liz.lo in her
care. Proper papers were prepared,
wherein a statement of her parentage
was Inserted, and certain stipulation
and requirements as to treatment and
education were provided. And so lit
tlo Lizzio passed from the humble roof
of her foster father into tlio companion
ship of tho gay and tho wealthy.
We need not follow her through tho
years of her education and mental and
iiiimal training, to the full physical de
velopment of womanhood. Sho grew
up to be beautiful, accomplished and
virtuous a companion to her benefac
tors, u useful, prudent, Indispensablo
fixture in the household. Rut neither
wealth, nor virtue, nor position could
bar the door against death. Tho lady
lied, leaving t" her sorrowing husband
i tiny daughter, the care of whom de
volved ou the same Lizzio whoso ten
dcr babvhood had been cared for by a
stranger. She appreciated her position
and filled it nobly; and the father,
charmed with tlio impromptu mother
of Ids baby, with whom he was thus
brought more closely m contact, alter a
uitahlo time offered her his hand In
itmrriiitro.
The disparity in their years was not
such as to render the oiler improper, or
the acceptance of it Injudicious, and
they were married.
A few vears inoro ol siiccessmi uusi
ncss disposed -Mr. .miner io rcuru imiu
activo life, and ho purchased an estate
on tho bunks of tho beautiful Susque
hanna, and bringing his young brido
inil her clmi-L'o w th him. took posses
sion of their new home.
A small tenant house which had not
attracted any attention, seemed to ob
struct the laying out of the grounds ac
cording to tho fancy of tho new propri
etor; and calling one of Ids workmen
to him be inquired who was the tenant.
Ho was Informed that it was a .Mrs.
West, an Knglisliwomaii, who.-o hus
band was but lately dead, and who was
living there alone. "West!" "West!"
the name was surely familiar, and call
ing to his wlfo, they proceeded at oneo
to call upon the widow. Sho was, as
ho suspected, tho fo-ter mother oftho
rich Mrs. Milner. The meeting was
exceedingly tender on both sides. The
Ilttlo tenant hou-o was not disturbed,
nor was Mrs. West required to pay any
more rent ; and tho happiest hours of
Lizzio. now no longer little, are spent
at tho cottage of her early friend, whom
her step daughter calls "Grandma."
Tho best part oftho foregoing siory is
Us truth. Tho tenant housostlll stands,
the widow still occupies it, tho Ilttlo
daughter is a married woman, and littw
Lizzio is a happy wiro and uioommg
mother of a littlo darling of her own.
