Oun readers must not forget tiiat tho
delegate election will take place on
Saturday, the i!7th of July. All of (air
voters should attend, and see that dele
gates of good standing and 1 citable char-
.ictcr are chosen. The State Convention
has set tho example of giving us a good
candidate, and we should follow suit.
Because we have a large majority in
the county, it will not answer to place
men in nomination of doubtful charac
ter or ability. Tho people need, and
the times demand our best men, men
who are true nnd tried, who have til
way been faithful to the party and Its
interests, nnd whose characters are un
sullied. As this is tho season usually adopted
for repairing our roads we commend the
following extract to our readers :
" In road making, ono great requisite
is the ready and total removal of the
water. There cannot bo a good road
where water stands by the side of it or
011 it. If tilts ditches have 110 ready out
let, the road bed will soak up the mois

and thus remain rutted and muddy. It
is vain to think of having a good road

On Thursday night the lflth ln-t., a lit
tle before midnight a tire broke out in
tho .-table of Morris ('.Sloan, directly

in a few minutes it was entirely envel

we hurried to the scene. It was clearly
impo-lblo to snvo the burning building

Two line.-, were formed to the nearest I

ten feet, the adloliiing building- were
all saved, and only the one originally

large and nearly new, and had attached
a large hog pen. In the stablo was a

H ADM AX TO HIS HOl'Ji.
Tun Homaii Emperor Hadrian, or
Adrian, was born in Home. a. d. TO.
and died lu a. D. HIS. Ilo succeeded
Trajan. August 11, 117, and showed great
aaitunisirativo ability. Ills learning
was considerable for the ago In which
ho lived, and his love of It induced him
to gather at his court the most celebra
ted authors nnd artists of his lime. Ho
Is recorded to have been a iluent speaker
nnd 11 polished writer. Ho Is reported,
when on his death-bed, to have made
the following "address to his soul:"
Aiilmuln vimula, lilniiilula,
1 Inspes, eiiincstiuc corporis,
i)un nunc nhlhis lu hs-ii?
I'nlllilntn, rlalila. uuiliila,
Nee 'tit soles, ilalilsjocoil
Of which Mr. Alexander Pope, tho
poet, gives us the following proo trans
lation :
"Alas, my soul I thou plcaIng com
panion of tfiiii body, thou fleeting thing
that art now deserting it I Whither art
thou flying? Towhat unknown region?
Thou art all trembling, fearful and pen
sive. Xow what lias become of thy for
mer wit and humor? Thou slialt Jest
and bo gay 110 more."
' The Emperor's reading had doubtless
urougnt mm acquainted with that new
philosophy which was taught by tho
Fisherman of Galilee, for it was during
tho reign or ills predecessor, that the
famous letter of I'lliiv. tinon tho doc
trine nnd character and conduct of the
christians, was written. Paul and Peter
Paul most certainly had preached
the gospel in Home, nnd this sect, which
had been everywhere spoken against,
had taught this heathen Emperor that
the soul was Immortal. For the
llrst time, perhaps, hud he given tho
matter a serious thought, but this ad
dress must have somewhat startled tho
waiting courtiers, and tho query which
the Emperor puts to his soul, must-have
been repeated from mouth to mouth,
and how many may have been awaken
ed from spiritual sleep by the question
(Jute mine ubibls In lnea?
to ask that still more important one
"what must I do to bo saved?"
Itut my object in this paper was to uf-
ford my readers an opportunity of com
paring tills celebrated "address" with
several translations of It, made by poets
of ability and renown. Tho Hist is by
-Matthew Prior, a poet and diplomatist
of con-iderehlo reputation, born about
the year um. ,
Poor little pretty, llutteiiuir thinir. I

And dost thou prune thy tremtilinir wine

'lhv humorous vein, thv pli-iislng roilv,
l.lcs nil neglected all forgot ;
And, pensive, waverins:, melancholy,
Thou ilread'st nnd hop'si limit know'st not
what.
Urior himself calls this mi imitation,
11111T perhaps all of tho versions are rather
imitations than translations, for in fact,
a literal poetical rendering Is next to
impossible, as any one will Hud upon
examination.
-Mr. Pope's remlcringnf it in supposed
to have been made some time after the
prose translation of It already given.
Ah licetim; spirit t wiinderlntf lire,
That loon hast warmed mv tender breast,
Must thou no morn this Inline inspire?
