FAMIKKS' DEPARTS EXT.
j:ntl- Cut liny fur .Ullcll C'mvi.
Sir. II. II. W. S. sceius to wish for somo
opinions respecting what has been sttlil
about cutting hay In Juno. I willingly
state that my experienco of over thirty
years nil goes to prove the. wlsilom of
cutting garfj when It Is eominlng Into
bloom, tho folly of waiting till It is
going out of blossom, and tho ilownrlgh
ernzlness of letting It stand till tho s-eed
Is ripe. I am milto certain that when
grasps Is cut early It Is not only the gain
of making such a much better quality
of hay that will gratify tho fanner, but
tho land Is tcarsely weakened at all j
wheras thoso who follow tho suicidal
practice of mowing late, rob their land
and tho aftcrfecd, cheat every animal
that cats thu poor, dry, lealless stull', and
defraud themselves and their families
this Is tho reason why cornstllks are
rated ns highly as hay, and why so much
meal has to be given tokenpstoro cattle
In a healthy condition. So far I can
corroboruto the statements made, but
however good tho hay, I have always
found bcnellt from feeding other stim
ulating food, tho extra feed, of whatever
kind always helping to Increase milk,
butter, llesh or growth. I havogtven,
nt various times, to milking cows', with
ndvantagc to the Increase of milk and
tho improvement of tho butter, every
kind of meal, pumpkins mangolds,
carrots, cabbage and kohl rabl, and by
doingso, tho samcqtiantlty of hay would
do for three cows, with tho extra feed,
that would do for two without It ; and
when I havo fed freely with meal and
roots combined, it would make acorre.-
ponding difference in exact proportion
to the extent theso nourishing kinds of
food wero triven.
There, is llltlo argument can ho sus
tained against tho soling system
probably it-may bo most profita'ototo
modify tho regular plan of keeping tho
cattle in tho yards by putting them out
twelve hours out of tho twenty-four.
say In thu night, during tho heat of
summer, and giving them 'plenty of
mowed foragoat milking time. Vetches
nro tho great crop for horses In England.
and the winter variety, mixed with ryo
and sowed In August, will cut a heavy
weight per aero by tho middle of 3Iay
but the vetches would scarcely stand
the severe frostes of tho northern States
they might do so by spreading Ion;
horse dung over them, and In Maryland
and south of that State, they would do
well without any extra care. The old
spring vetch of England is called tho
"Goro" vetch by many, and Is larger in
tho seed aud much stronger and heavier
in tho stem and loaves thnn all other
kinds. Those introduced into this
country nro mostly German vetches
but tho American farmer will be a long
time before lie does much with any of
tho best forago corps for tho seeding is
very expensive for they will not suc
ceed unless tho seed is sown very thick,
and tho land should bo very highly
manured, too.
Should Fence Posts be Set In nil Inserted
I'o.lllou l
Notwithstanding this suject has re
ceived so much attention from tho agri
cultural papers of late, tho question is
apparently ns far from settlement as
over. Many statements of experience,
havo been given, but as they aro both
pro and con, wo aro as much in the dark
as ever in relation to tho right way.
Allow mo to trespass on your patience
long enough to make ono moro stale,
incut.
An old farmer, who has had much
experienco in the matter, informs me
that tho bull end of n log is much less
durable than the top, the timber be
ing better and moro durable tho
farther from tho roots that it grows.
If this bo so, it follows that tho
posts should always bo set in an
inverted position the top end having
grown farthest from tho roots, being,
according to this theory, tho most
durable Tlio theory looks plausible j
but, never having tried it myeself, I
cannot speak from experienco.
Terhaps some of your readers can ex
plain tho philosophy of this. L. F.
Jleailington, iV. J.
Rabbits nml Prill t Trees.
The following is tho best method of
protecting fruit trees from rabbits in
winter : Take u pleco of newspaper tho
slzo of two pages of tho Country
Gentlemen, and doublo it together,
and commence at tho cut edge, and
wrap it around tho body of tho fruit tree,
smoothly, aud ns tight as you can, and
tlo It at tho bottom, middlo ami top,
with small strips of bass bark, or paper
or hemp twine, letting oach string pass
nround twice. Tho paper should extend
from tho ground high enough, say
eighteen to twenty-two inches. Jn tho
spring this may bo cut off, or, oven if
left on, will not injuro tho tree, and may
help to protect It from winter's cold or
summer heat. I havo tried for tlireo
years, with perfect success. Tho rabbits
heroin Southern Ohio, whero the Iron
furnaces havo so much undergrowth
timber, nro very numerous, and when
they attack a young orshard, kill many
young trees of nil kinds, in winter.
when there is snow lying long on tho
ground.

How shall wo guard our children nnd

rewiliiff, nnd luduco them, chenrfully
