THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBUHG, COLUMBIA COUNTY, PA.
FARMERS' DEPARTMENT.
Meadows ToF-DttLssiNG.OiiiiifVst
farms thcro nro portions of meadows of
which the produco Is -ery small comimr
cd with others. Thrso sections ran he
much Improved, without breaking the
sward by a liberal top-dresblug of llmo
and wilt. Theso will Invigorate tho
growth of tho aftermath, and if repeated
tho ensuing spring will render tho poor
spots equal in productiveness tothof-oby
which they nro surrounded. Tho ex
periment is worth trying, unlets It is
deemed desirnblo to breakup tho whole
meadow for tho purpose of rescedlng at
a future day. Nearly tho same results
can bo produced by tho application of
leeched wood ashes ns a top-drcsslng
whero tho material Is attainable for
that purp030.
Sheep. If troubled with ticks, lice
or scab, though at this season It will not
do ordinarily to dip them, tho spots
most ntrceted may bo wot with the
dipping solution (strong tobacco
water, mndo by boiling tobacco stems,
mixed with strong country soft-soap)
This is best applied by n bottlo having
a groovo cut in thesido of the cork with
which It stoppered. Give sheep access
to water dally. It is a great mistake to
force them to eat snow or go without
Feed roots ficely to nil, and especially
to fattening sheep. Very llttlo grain
will bo a great benefit, if equally ills-
tributed. Handle your sheep and knvw
their condition.
Insects can now bo successfully
headed off. Tho eggs of tho tent-cater'
pillar seem to bo especially arranged
with n view to their ready removal. If
n swelling Is seen near tho end of a twi;
It should bo looked to, as it is likely
that there Is n deposit of eggs glued In
a band aronnd It. These clusters nro
readily seen whilo tho trees arc leafless.
and may bo removed by tho aid of a
step-ladder, on trees of moderate size,
and on larger ones a pair of shears may
bo arranged at the end of a polo to work
by a string. Any time and labor mini
red to remove theso eggs will bo tirofltiv
bly expended.
Fowls usually roost as high as post
bio to avoid uncomfortablo draughts of
nlr. If indulged In this, they often
become asphixiatod and drop dead from
their perches, from breathing foul air
arising from tho fermentation of their
droppings, or being suffocated by tho
carbonic acid gas from tho breaths
of many fowls, all close to tho top of
tho houso or from both causes. In
warm quarters and well fed, they will
begin to lay before tho clo:o of tho
month.
Dahlia Hoots. Keep your Dahlia
roots just as they como out of tho groud
until spring, Do not pull tho roots from
the stem, unless you wish to destroy
them. They must bo kept attached
until tho buds aro started in the spring,
when they nro separated in n way to
give a root to each bud.
In poli-ihlngor washing door knobs or
other articles projecting from a painted
surface, protect tho paint by slipping
over tho nrticles a piece of stout pastc
boarod or cloth, having a holoor slit in
the center largo enough to slip it on.
Accounts. To begin tho now year
aright when it comes, the old year must
be finished rightly. Farmers aro apt to
run into careless habits about their ac
counts not so much in, money transac
tions as in their store bills, especially
whero tho farm products aro exchanged
for family groceries. Go over all uc
counts, and get ready to commence with
a clear balance-sheet January 1st, 1607.
A plain account-book has prevented'
many a law-suit, for It is tho very best
witness a man can take into court, pro
vided it lias been regularly and accu
rately kept.
Foddeii. It makes llttlo difference
how abundant fodder is ; its waste is
criminal. Those who throw out hay,
straw or stalks, to bo trampled upon,
nnd trod into the ground by cattle ami
fchcep, do a very foolish thing, for If
properly used as bedding even, It would
bo worth a good deal for ma'aure. Hacks
ought to bo provided for tho yard and
sheds, as well as for the stalls, and so
constructed that all tho cattlo refuse
may bo worked over as indicated.
Livestock of all kinds, require
tho farmer's especinl caroand daily per
sonal utteutlon. Tho cold weather is
apt to Induce carelessness on tho part
of tho hands, and animals aro not weli
watered or equally foddered, or syste
matically curded or cleaned, unless tho
master's presenco s.ecuro faithful work.
Feed and water regularly and well, and
keep salt before horses, cattloandsh, op.
"Wo llko tho Liverpool rock salt tho best.
This comesln solid, hard masses, weigh
ing several pounds, nnd lumps may bo
laid in tho mangers or in salt troughs In
tho yard. Give all kinds of eattio a
daily nirlng of two or treo hours. Young
cattle and shceji may havo much more
liberty. No class .of stock should bo
allowed to run down In flesh it is so
hard to bring them up again, nnd keep
the young stock growing.
Cows. Keep their stables clean, sprln
klo gypsum to prevent tho oder of am
monia. Give abundant ventilation, but
not cold drafts. Mako them exercise
dally, when it Is not very icy. If kept
In a yard, see that tho shed h dry, well
roofed, and, If possible, board up tho
front in part, and put up feed racks,
Put balls or boards on tho horns of tho
"bullies," and of quarrelsomo ones. It
Is said that corn nubbins fed to cows on
tho ground Is n preventative of abor
tion. If thero bo any vlrtuo It, It prob
ably lies In tho cow's picking up soino
earth with tho corn. It Is well to give
occasionally a handful of wood ashes,
and If a cow's breath Is not quite sweet
glvo pulverized charcoal and a tablo
spoonful of nitre (saltpetre) In her food

SEWING-MACHINES
ARE THE REST IN THE WORLD.
Salesrooms, GM Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pn.
Whllonlarito number of Machines havo been
offered to tho public, soino of whluli possess points
of excellence and acknowledged merit, wo havo
long felt what others havo experienced, the ne
cessity of n Machine more petfect Inlts mechani
cal structure, combining lu the
HIGHEST DEGREE
SIMPLICITY WITH DURABILITY,
nnd whllo carablo of doing a
GREATER RANGE OP WORK,
ono that could bo easily understood and compre
hended by nil.
To supply n Hewlng-Machlne free from the oh-
lections attached In others has been nocasy task;
for wc not only had to surpass other laeiuncs, as
they appeared jcars ago, but also ns Improved
from llmo to time by more recent experience.
This wo boldly claim has been accomplished by
the liberal expenditure of capital, and the pa
tient, untiring labor of years; and in presenting
r Machine to lhe public, we shall innl: stion:
assertions respecting Its merits, which mo nro
prepared to substantiate III every pa'tlcular.
Discarding tho Chain ana Loop.orKnusmcnes,
wo adopted tho
LOCK STITCH
ialllto on both sldfs of the fabric), which is rc.
gamed by the masses as besj sultrd to all kinds
of worlt, Hut to meet obJoctlonssomctlmosiU'Rod
against this favorite stitch, wo lime added the
Knot, Double Loci!, and Double Knot, cither of
which is
STRONGER AND MORE ELASTIC
than tho Locks thus enabling the operator to
select a stitch
PERFECTLY SUITED
to every grade of fabric, and whero necessary, sew
seams much sttonger than it is possible to do by
hand.
THE FLORENCE
POUR DIFFERENT STITCHES
with ns much ease as ordinary Machines mako
one, and with as little n nchinery.
The result of lepcated tests has been nil wo
could desire, and from Its first Introduction the
riorenco lias gained hosts of friends, and been
regarded ns a
HOUSEHOLD NECESSITY;
proving that the public fully appreciate the many
ndvnntagcs combined In the 1-lorenco Machine,
Over all others, tho Florence must bo seen to bo
fully appreciated.
We claim lor tho
FLORENCE
the following
ADVANTAGES
over any and r.U
SEWING-MACHINES IN THE WORLD:
T3- It makes four illircrent stitches, the lock,
knot, doubWoek, and double-Un)t, oi. one and
tho name maciilne. Iiich stitch being alike on
botll sides of tho fabric.
Every Machine lias the reveislble feed mo
Hon, which enables lhe operator, by simply turn
ing n tliumb-screw, to have tlie work run either
to tho right or left, to stay any part of the seam,
or fasten tho ends of scams, without turning the
fabric.
CJ-Changing tho lenath of stitch, nnd fiom
ono kind of stitch to nnothcr, can icadlly bo done
whilo the Muchlno is In motion,
5- The needle Is easily adjusted, and does not
skip stitches.
5-It is nlmost noiseless, and can be used
whero rpilet Is necessary.
fiZ Its motions nro all posltlse; there are no
springs to get out of order, and Its simplicity en
able any ono to operate It.
3- It does not require finer thread on the under
than for tho upper side, an.1 will slw across the
heaviest seam, or from ono to mote thicknesses
of cloth, without change of needle, tension, brail;
lug llucad, or skipping stitches.
WThe ItcRimer Is easily adjusted, and will
turn any width of hem desired.
2- No other Machlno will do so or at a rango
of work as the Florence.
3It will hem, fell, bind, gather, braid, quilt
nnd gather and sew on a rulllo at the same time
1 1 has no springs to get out of order, nnd will hi.l
a lifetime.
i-It Is fully protected nnd licensed by Ellas
Howe, Jr., and our own Lellcis Patent.
The taking up of the slick-thread Is not per
formed by the ii regular contraction of a wire coll
or uncertain operation of springs. The precision
and accuracy with which tho Florence draws the
thread into the cloth is unappioae-l.ed oy any
sew lug-.Macliluc hitherto oifcrud in the world.
o furnish each Machlno with "B.irnum's Self.
Sewer," which guides the work itsclf.and Is of In
cal ,-ulablo value, especially to Inexperie nce oper
ators.
Whllo possessing tho above, nnd many other
advantages, mo r lorcnco Is sold nt eorii-siKindin;
prices with other Ilrst-class Machine's, nnd a care
ful examination will fully substantiate all that
wu have claimed for It, nnd Justify thn ussertlon
we now make, that it Is tho best Sewlng-Maehluo
