By way of contrast to the lato tame
hunt at tho Xorth mountain, I propo-o
to glvou few incidents concerning an
excursion to tho forests of Xniiegnl, du
ring a residence In South America.
Our party numbered fifteen; seven
wero Indlnncargeros.twoof whom were
women, and each carried about seventy
live pounds. Mr. Fruiter, an Engll-ii-nian,
wu3 chief of tho expedition, the
main object of which was to make n
collection of plants, stull'ed birds, and
other animals for an English Seientlllo
Society. Juan Jameson, another of tho
party, was tho son of a Scotch phy.-I-clan
who had resided in the country
from tho days of Bolivar. Juan's spec
iality was tho collection and preserva
tion of rare plants, an art he had learned
from his father. The others of tho par
ty were Vicente, a native hunter or re
pute ; I,uca, servant; Vlllota, hunter
with tho volcara, and Cabc.a, the black
cook who boasted that ho could stew a
parrot or ron-t a monkey to a turn. Wo
were armed with guns, iiuictcluf, and
cokaras. The inachcta U tx sort of -hurt
sword, and Is used alike for cutting
meat, hewing a tree, or attacking mi
enemy. In traveling through the 'for
ests it Is Indispensable. The volcara Is
a hollow stick about nine feet long,
through which clay balls nro blown with
surprising force. Tho hunter puts a
chunk of clay in his mouth, and with
his tongue rounds the pellet to the prop
er size and shupo. It kills tho bird as
effectually asshot, and has the advan
tage of not injuring tho plumage nor
tearing tho skin, which is unite n con
sideration in preparing a collection.
I attended the party as a sort of su
pernumerary, having no object save ad
venture. When dressed in my .water
proof pnuchu, deer-skin overalls,
armed with a double-barrelled shot-gun
and mat,'icta, mounted on my tnwty
pony "Frank" with an Indian saddle
and spurs with rowels three inches in
diameter, I fancied myself as formida
ble n looking guerrilla asoverki ed f.tlr

throat.
Our Hrst day's Journey took us to Cal
acali, distant from Quito about twenty
si' miles. The people there, however,
mea-uro di-t.inces by leagues, and it
takes four or live miles to make one.
Our miiinals wore fed their proper pro-

animals usually travel without shoes,
though before starting on a Journey
their feet are generally trimmed, a pie
caution which, unfortunately, 1 neg
lected. We staid for tlio night in a
misorablo Itimlto, or inn : and the bray
ing of donkeys, tho singing of mosqui
toes, the biting of fleas, tlio novelty of
my situation, anil tho verjUard ground,
effectually prevented me from sleeping.
Early next morning wo left (.'alae.ili,
and found the path for roads there are
none very good until wo reached I'alo
galla. This place is a mere collection
of miserable hut", but is remarkable
for being placed on the highest point of
tho route as you ero.-s the Andes from
tho valley of Quito, to the Esmeralda
region on tho Pacific eoa-t. Our ascent
out of tho valley had been gradual, and
human habitations became scarcer as
we advanced to this out-post of civiliza
tion, If civilization it can bo called.
The day was well advanced when we
reached l'alogall.i, but rather than stay
all night in such a cold place, Mr. Era
iter mid I resjlvod to push on to Caehl
Llacta, an lariemla, or plantation at the
foot of the mountains, leaving the bal
ance of liie party to proceed more leis
urely. The descent was very steep and
dangerous, especially fur those niuiuited
on horses and mules. Travelers -eldoui
if ever travel this route, and the natives
go on foot, carrying with them long
sticks sharpened at the end, to aid their
descent. 1 was advised to leave my
hoi'soand hire a silcro, or Indian carri
er, but preferred my horse to a .-eat on
an Indian's luck, though the latter Is a
eomiujii mode of conveyance.
To add to our di-comfort and danger,

Near tho base of tho mountain we

the steepness of tlio declivity and tlio

roared like a cataract as It rtihed
through tho narrow gorge, The path
was so narrow that 1 could not dis

which swayed mid shook ns though it
