A MmtDUtt of the mo'st hoi rlhlo and revolting character Is suppoed tohnvo been perpetrated In Mnhonlng Town- ship, about one in lit; from Kdtnhurg, on tho road to Mount Jackson, on Friday lat. The clrcumslances nnd facts con nected with It, as wo havo them from good authority, nro ns follows : Our readers will remember that In November last a man was found in Pol lock Township lying out, near a hay stack, In n terrible state of destitution nnd buffering, nnd taken charge of by tho overseers of the poor of tho town ship. Ills nnnio is John Drown, nnd ho stated at that time Hint ho hnd n wlfo when lie went Into thearmy, and on his return from tho army found her murrled to another man named Frederick Car penter. On nsccrtnlnlng this fact, mid that they were determined to llvo to gether, ho loft, and having no place to go, and no money, came to town, and had laid around the haystacks for three or four days, so that when found ho was much emaciated, nnd ids feet badly froz en, lie wns attended by Dr. Darker, and after about six mouths so far recov ered that he could leave. 1 to then went to where his wife nnd Carpenter lived, In a shanty lu tho place mentioned above, and since that time ho and Ida son, and tho women and Carpontur, havo lived together. On Mtiudny last Carpenter died, and on Monday Coroner Darker held an in quest, when tho following facts were elicited, Drown and Ills son being two of tho witnesses. Mrs. Drown was mar ried to Carpenter in Pulaski, according to tlio toitlniony of her sou, about two ears ago. They lived pleasantly to gether till his father came back, nnd havo since had fromient tiiiarrcls, because Urown threatened them with prosecu tion. In t hose piarivl- she al .uysabus- cd, lieal, and kicked him, nnd on the riday before his death Drown had again threatened to prosecute, wln-n she kicked Carpenter, and told him not to it there like a damned fool, and let Brown strike him." Slio kicked him frequently, nnd nlways aimed to kick him in tho moit sensitivo part of his body. Tho old man Drown stated that Carpenter complained of severe pain in tlio lower part of his bowels on Saturdav, nnd on Sunday morning asked for a doctor, and said ho could not got well without nn injection, lit own went for Dr. Mltclieltree, but Carpenter only breathed twice lifter the doctor arrived. Other testimony was taken proving that the woman was in the habit of kick ing and beating Carpenter in tho most' unmerciful manner, and at various places, and always when kicking him aimed at the lower part of his bowel-:. Carpenter, although a powerful man, never re.-isted, but in tho language of ono of tho witnesses, "just stood and took it." After hearing tlio testimony, Dr. Dar ker, assisted by Dr. Micliletree, made a post mortem examination of the body, I and found sufficient iullamation in the parts indicated, in their opinion, to pro duce death. Tlio jury returned tho folowing ver dict: That Frederick Carpenter eamo to his death, in Mahoning Township, on tliothirtiethdayof September, ISCfi, and that it was tlio result of kicks and blows inflicted by Catherine Carpenter, his re puted wife. The Coroner thereupon Issued his warrant for tho arrest of Catherine, and she was arrested and brought to Newcas tle and lodged in Jail to await her trial. Newcastle Uuzeltc. GREAT FIRE AT TIDIOUT. On Friday tho twelfth Instant, at half-past ono o'clock in the afternoon, an explosion took place at the Thomp son well, cau.-pd by the bursting of a six hundred barrel oil-tank which was full of oil. This oil immediately came in contact witii tho flro of tho engine, and almost Instantly connected with another largo tank holding live hundred barrels of oil, when the conflagration became general. In its mad march tho lire consumed ono corner only of a der rick, which allowed It to fall upon tho afety-valvo of nn engine near by and In operation, and which cut oil" the es cape of steam. In a few moments after tho boiler blew up with a terrific noi-e, arrying a largo part of tho "crown hoot" of tho boiler half way up the adjacent hill. At the Instant of the explo-lou a vast hhect of oil on lire was carried a great di.-tanco up tho hill, burning anil singe ing everything in its course. Teaniters who had left their wagons while getting their dinner returned to find them u charred wreck. Several horses were badly ulnged, especially an old white hor.o, that loit one of his eyes by tlio lire and tho half of hi coal, one entire side of him being scorched to u snull' color. Tins causo of tho flro is attributed to the defective hooping of tho six hundred barrel tank at tho Thompson well. This tiro was right in tiio heart of thoTidiouto oil region, and would naturally bo sup pose 1 to havo mado quite a vacuum ; but wo are informed by an eyo-witness that while tlio fire was almost nt its height contracts woro being matlo for now en- gino-housesnnd derrick.), anil that some building material was brought on tho ground, and that tho whole burnt dis trict is by tills time (our timo of going to pro-!) till allvo with carpenters and mechanics removing tlio debris and erecting now machinery. A DAY or two slnco wo had the brief details of tho murder of Jcs.jo lloso, by his sou, James Ito.-o, agod about nine teen, and the further fact that tho young man had confessed tlio parricide, and implicated his mother in tho crlmo. Tho following nro tho particulars: It appears that tho father, Je.-'so Dose, has been in the habit of drawing tho money his sons had earned by their labor In tlio neighborhood, and said he was go ing to draw some Ibrty-flvo dollars duo tlio eldest son, who Is nineteen years old, on Friday last. His son told him if ho did ho would kill him. Tlio father went to a spelling-school on that day, but it appears did not get tho money. The sou, hovvovor, siippo-dng ho had got It, by his mother's instigation, and ac companied by his younger brother, hid behind a stump, near some bushes, by which tho father would return. Deforo his father arrived, tho younger became frightened at tho deed they con templated, and fled. As Ho-o pa.-wed the stump tho oldest sou struck him with tho axe he had with him, knock ing his brains out, and then cut his throat with u butcher knife, leaving the body lying till morning, when he gave the alarm to tlio neighbors, who found tlio body on Saturday morning some threo hundred yards from tho 1ioum. Upon (parching tho house, bloody clothes wore found with some of the brains on tliom ; nl.-o the nxo with which tlio deed wns done. They arrest ed tho mother and both sons, when tho eldest immediately confessed tlio deed. Ito-o was a lazy, sliiftlesi sort of fellow, and tho mother has not borno a good name for tome tiuio.
