EiieonrnRfmMit o Plnnt Vines. " Let us plant vines," says Horace Greeley, nnd to enforce his rulvlco he of fers, us will bo seen helow, two very liberal prizes to enconrago farmers and tvorklnginen to supply themselves with grapes. Mr. G. well says : " Thogrape, under skilful culture, Is n surer crop to-day than almost any other delicate fruit, tho strawberry only excepted. Experienced growers say that grapes jnay bo crown, wherever they thrive at nil, for tho prlco of wheat, pound for pound ; yet, while wheat scarcely aver afes four cents per pound to growers, grapes can almost nlways bo sold at double that price. "Wo can stnrt tho vino and enjoy its fruit within three years; whereas at least thrico that time is required to bring an orchard from in fancy to maturity. Our farmers and mechanics, their wives and children, but especially our farm-laborers nnd day-laborers, generally ought to cat far moro good fruit and far less salt meat ; mid they cannot until fruit becomes far cheaper nnd moro abundant. I would suggest to our Agricultural Societies, Stato and local, the expediency of con certing systematic efforts to extend the cultivation of tlio vino. Let, us organ ize county nnd town societies which shall have the diffusion of the vino cul ture for ono of its prominent objects. It would be easy to have n fow vines planted on every farm, and then theft n sad discouragement to fruit growers would bo obviated. Only let us make grapes as abundant as potatoes, and they will no moro bo stolen. A little Well-directed effort" by a few public Hplritcd men mid women will secure to their township an abundanco of grapes. If tho vino is planted on every farm therein, it will bo seldom that tho crop Will utterly fail. Thero will at first bo many dlverso species or varieties, and cxperienco will show which is best adiipted to the climate and soli of that locality. Time will teach many valua ble lessons, and n fow years will give us thousands of skilful vlnc-dressers. "Wo shall livo longer and better, havo moro comfort nnd less disease, when every dwelling shall bo surrounded by its vines. I hopo our Agricultural Socle ties and Fanners' Clubs will deviso and adopt fit measures tostimuiato tho plant ing of tho vino ; meantime, I, as a mere beginning, will pay a premium of two hundred dollars to the first, nnd one hun dred dollars to tho second township of not less than ono hundred houses, whoso threo principal officers shall certify to mo that every dwelling in that town ship has not less than two wcll-plauted, thrifty vines. Clean Pigs nnd Dirty Pigs. Pigs enjoy tho reputation of having a real liking for dirt; and, certainly, tho ivwy in which thoy nro kept on somo farms would show that their owners nro determined to glvo them nmplo oppor tunities for carrying out this liking, Ko motion can, however, bo moro or roncous than this, as none is certainly so productivo of loss to tho keeper. Let any ono not convinced of this try the two modes of plg-kecplng tho dirty and tlio clean the food in both cont'd. nnd other general treatment being tho pnmo; and tho result will show hini which of tho two is tho beat in tho end. A great deal depends upon tho modo in which they nro housed. Mr. Itaiues, ol Mills, adopts tho following: "A largo liouso is enclosed at tho shies, so ns to bo warm nnd dry. Tlio floor Is paved, nnd sprinkled over with burnt clny, nnd nmca obtained by burning weeds. In this tho pigs nro fed; whllo for resting nnd sleeping they havo n compartment railed olfnt tho other .end, nnd which is mriply provided with clean straw. In nnothor enso tho principle of box-food- Jug has been applied, tho pigs being kept in it pit, into which tho manure from tho ox or cow stables and thohorso htables is put. Tho pigs tread this down, and enjoy themselves amazingly. In ono caso where this has been adopt til tho farmer states tlmt his pigs havo civen him a profit of their meat and loft tlio dung for uoihlng. Mar: Lane Jirpreu. JlInvCKble Failures. Oxn morning, during her mother's absence, Kutla, daughter of tho widow of a great Icelandic chlcr, feeling tired and heavy, went to bed, not very long after sho had rNen from It, and fell into a deep sleep. At noon, her mother's'.it- tendants went to her, but, try as they would, could not wake horj so, fearing that she was dead, they called her foster-mother, nnd told her of Iter daugh ter's stato. Sho went to tho side of her bed and endeavored to rouso her, but qulto in vain. Then, looking attentive ly nt her, sho said : " Hho is not dead : the flame of life is 'still illckerlng In her bosom, but I am no more able to wnko her than you were." And with these words, sho sat down beside her couch, nnd kept close watch over her for four wholo days nnd nights. On tho fifth day ICatla awoke, and seemed to be overcome with sorrow; but no ono dared to ask her what was tho cause of it. Soon aflcr this, her mother returned from her Journey, but her daughter was no longer the same that sho had left be hind her. Sho was changed. Wondering and grieved at her strange manner, tho mother asked her attend ants apart what had befallen her, and why she had behaved thus: but they could only tell her that she had slept unceasingly for four days and four nighti, and on awaking had mIiowii this sorrow without over telling anybody tho reaon of It, or what ailed her. On hearing this, sho took Katla hcrelf apart, and urged her to tell her what ailed her whether aught had befallen her in her long sleep, assuring her that sho would lighten her load ol sorrow In thus giving her the half of it. At last, vielding to her mother's prayers, sho spoke ns follows : " I had not slept long, when there canio to my bedside a beautiful lady, richly 'dressed, who spoke sweetly to me, nnd telling mo that she lived nt the farm Thvora, not far hence, begged mo to go back with her sonic part of the way thither. As soon its I roso to com ply with her wish, she placed her gloves in my bed, saying, 'These shall take your placo while you are away.' Then wo went out, and camo soon to a largo lake, as clear and smooth as glass, upon which, near the shore, a gnyly-palntcd boat was moored. Hero I would part from tho lady, and wished her God speed ; but she, thanking me for having come so far with her, hold out her hand, ns if to bid mo farewell, crying, ' Will you not say farewell to Alvor'." " No sooner had I stretched forth mine in return, than sho grasped it tightly, and leaping from the shore into the skiff with me, rowed it swiftly to a small island which stood in the mld.it of tho lake. Now, indeed, I felt only too well that she had all power over me, nnd that T was unablo to resist her. Sho saw that I was filled with dread, and tried to calm my fears, showing me every kindness and courtesy, and assur ing mo that It was Fate alone which had compelled her to treat mo thus. ' J will,' sho said, 'soon take you safely home again. " When wo had come to tho island, I saw that there stood upon it a ensile moro beautiful than anything I had over seen or heard of before. 'This is mine,' said Alvor; and leading me into it by tho hand, she took mo to her own room, where many ladies wore sitting. Thero sho made mo enter tt bath of sweet water, and when I had bathed, sho took mo to tv beautiful bed which stood in the room, covered with curtains of tho richest stuff, anil filled with soft down. In this 1 fell mleep after I had drunk n cup of rare wine which was handed me. When 1 awoke, I found on a couch near mo a mantlo worked richly in gold, which the lady who sat by my sido hade mo put on, together with an embroidered dro which sliu gave me. When I was dressed, sho threw also over me her own mantle, which was daintily wrought in' gold and lined with fur. Uasideall this, sho gave mo five riug3 of red gold, a golden band for my hair, and a costly belt, begging me to keep them all as his gifts. After I had thus attired myself, sho bade mo follow her to tho dlnlng-hall, and wo went there with her, eight la dles in all. "All tho walls of tho room were hung with cloth of woven gold, nnd the tables were crowded with silver vessels nnd llagons, and with gold Inlaid horns ; nnd round tho table sat many hamRimo men, splendidly attired. At the high table stood n throne, aiid near tills 1 nv n man, dressed In rich silk, lying aaleop on a couch. Alvor went uu4u him ami 1.1... .....1 I 1., 1 il'. "As soon us ho bttw that I was in the (mil, ho came to mo, nnd taking mo by tho hand, led mo to the throne, where ho made mo sit, anil sat beside me, Then tho Lady Alvor pointed to us, and cried out to tho guests, 'Heo the brhlo and bridegroom !' Whereupon they shouted as with ono voice, and drank and made merry till nightfall. And u priest entered, and wo were married be fore I well knew what 1 was doing. For two days nnd nights 1 lived In Joy nnd pleasure. No ono could bo beautiful, moro devoted, moro noble t; 'n Karl. " (j.i tho third day, Karl said: Dear Katln, wo must soon part ; call tho son whom you shall bear to mo by my imme, and glvo him from his f tther, whom he shall jicvc-r we, thlo but of wrought, gold, nnd this knifo with tho haft of cunning workmanship, nnd let them bo heirlooms lit his family.' And ho bade mo place the belt and kulfo, to f, ither with tho embroidered garments and costly ornaments which 1 had worn while with him, In n sack, nnd take them homo with inc. " 'Show them,' he said, ' to your mother, nud tell her the wholo truth; for.lt Is but Just, nnd your duty. Let her uld you in building tt farm nt Thvcrn, whero you shall seo two small hillocks, which shall bo your money niounds. In that place you shall found a great and noblo family. Now I must leave you, nud you will never seo mo ngaln ; for,' said ho, sadly, ' tho hours of my 11 fo nro numbered.' " When ho had finished speaking, Al vor, tho Ltttly, took my hand nnd led mo out ; nnd ns 1 left tho hall 1 heard n loud nnd echoing sound, and turning my head to see whence it came, behold, Kari lay dead, for his heartstrings had broken with exceeding love and sorrow. So tho lady rowed mo again in tho boat across tho lako and brought mo homo, and took tho gloves out of my bed. "As she left me, sho said, 'Mny it faro well with you, though you have caused but sorrow to mo lu breaking my sou's heart with lovo nnd anguish. Knjoy nil tho wealth you have, and be hnppv.' So saying, she was no moro with me." So she showed her mother all the beautiful nud costly things that sho had brought with her from Alvor's castle. lu tlio Summer sho gave birth to a son, a lovely child, and exceeding nil other children in mind and form, whom sho called, as sho had promised his father, Karl. Soon after, sho built a new farm at Thvora, where sho found tho two money-mound, as Knri had promNcd, and dwelt thero happy and prosperous to a ripe old age. J"0,S. 11 1 EG F.L A 11. S.
