In an an article published two weeks

Tin: following paragraph Immediate
ly follows another relating to a young
man In a deranged state Of mind, lie
evidently had his Inllitenco on tho Jun
ior, for witness the muddle he was in
when wilting tho following:
Tin: Difference. "While wpoppo-io
the negro-sull'iagelte, Meretir, at heart,
earnestly, and from principle, tho Col
i'Mhian is hired, or bought up, to do lis
blowing, and titter all has the Imperti
nence and mallco to charge the Jh-mo-wvt
and Star with Infidelity. " O,
shame, whero Is thy blush V"
Tin: plethora of words with which
tho Junior oT the Jvmovrat and Mar U
mulcted appears in an article about
"stubbing," in his last number. Tho
Coi.UMiitAK, according to this authori
ty, is stabbing tho Democracy, stabbing
the ItadlcaN, and, what Is worst of all,
stabbing the subscription list of the
Democrat and Star. As to that remark
able Journal Itself, ho says that the Co
li'Miiian alms at It "Its pol-onous
darts," which must bo regarded, of
course, as very naughty warfare. Hut
all this stabbing and shooting of darts
receives a huriiionlotH explanation from
tho.Iuuior. The cause Is founded in the
" real nature" of thoCoi.rMiiiAN, which
resembles that of a crouching and
blood-thirsty tiger," In its being "like
Satan," and Its determination " to steal
the livery of Heaven to do tho work of
Hell." Desides, to clinch the matter,
we are told that, " like tho Father ofall
Evil," it quotes "sacred doctrines f not
Shake.sp"iireJ to accomplish its wicked
purposes." This explanation must be
considered satisfactory !
"Wi:i:ks before our advent both tho
Ili'iniblican and tho J)einocrut and Star
(from motives well understood and gen
erally appreciated by the public) com
menced their warfare upon us, and how
persistently they have continued it their
rospectivo journals will show. o made
up our mind at the outset to withstand
this combined and preconcerted attack
with becoming patience, repulsing our
enemy when occasion might require.
To this position we have adhered. After
this singular combination of forces to
oppose us is conidered, tho most amus
ing feature in this little drama is their
cool effrontery in complaining that this
papornbtisosthoni. They must boallow
ed to exhaust the vocabulary of denunci
ation when they speak of us (and in this
respect there has been a generous riv
alry between them), while our right to
reply is denied, no matter how justly
that reply may be made. Wo state the
case between us and our two contempo
raries fairly. Formerly the 'endticrm
was the most virulent and malicious,
but latterly tho Dcinot rat and Slur car
ries oil' the palm.
Wii i:i!i:.s, we, as members of the
Hloontsbttrg Lodge o. ;!!, of the I.
(). of (!. T., beholding tho poisonous: in
fluence of the wine cup, imbedding its
deadly venom within the bo-oni of the
community around us indcllanee ofour
miuhticst efforts nut forth to banish it
from (Mir midst, destroying the lives of
tlio aged, and lastening its grasp upon
many of our youth, causing premature
decay and untimely death, are re.-olved
that an attempt be made to make an
impression upon the public mind by
means of the public lecture.
Accordingly llev. M. Hhodes.of Sun
bury, a firm and able advocate of the
Temperance cause, with tho glorious
emblem of our noble order unfurled
about him, willingly responded to
the call. To him we return our mot
.sincere thanks for the laudable manner
in which lie has served us. Although
tho words to which he gave utterance
have ceased to vibrate within those sa
cred walls, may the sentiments that he
advanced have awakened tho drowsy
powers of the people that have slum
bered during the long lap-o of years.
Let their influence bo as noiseless as the
dew, and after our honored brother has
left this unfriendly world, may tho seed
that ho has sown continue to bear fruit,
until time shall ceuso to bear upon its
wings the influence of words.
