Ox Thursday afternoon last a young man
named Snowden, from Bedford county, came
to this city soliciting money to ralieve the
distress of his family, they having lately been
hurned out. \\ bile in the Allegheny House,
on Main street, be presented hjp subscription
paper to a man named Cuampenour, a
cripple, who immediately began to abuse him.
calling him a "d—d fraud"' and using other
very abusive language. Snowden, not know
ing Champenour was crippled, knocked him
down. Champenour then drew a revolver
and fired twice at Snowden, missing him.
Snowden then attempted to escape, but wa
attacked by about a dozen of Champenour's
friends and knocked down. He finally sue
ceeded in gelt ing away and was pursued down
street by a shower of stones. Taking refuge
in a tavern at Ibe lower end of the street, he
remained for some time, and on going out
again bad not proceeded far until he was
again attacked and compelled to take refuge
in flight. Ilis pursuers ran him into a store
on Virginia street w hen the doors were locked
and the police sent for who gave him the
necessarry protection until he left the city.
So far neither Champenour nor any of bis
friends have been arrested. Upon the
whole, this is rather rough treatment to a
stranger. — Blair County Radical.
AMONG THS INDIANS.— Lieut. Herndon tells
us that no tribes of aboriginees are found in
the deepest forests of South America, from
the Andes to the Atlantic coast, that do not
have and use Doct. Ayer's medicines and
Lowell cottons. "Tremont,"' "Suffolk,"
"Boott," are seen stamped in large red and
blue letters upon their garments, while Ayer's
Pills a-d Cherry Pectoral are among the
treasures of their habitations. The native

GARDENING AND TREE PIABTISG is receiv
ing special attention just now. We see quite
a number of our citizens planting shade
a nd ornamental trees about their premises.
We hope those who have not yet begun will
profit by tbe good example of their neigh
hors. The planting of a shade tree is but
little labor or expense, and not only beauti
firs, but also adds greatly to the value of
property.
FISH.—An al-jndance of fine fish have
been caught in the river within the past
week. Parties have gone out in the evening
nd returned after a few hours dipping with
40, 50 or 60 fine suckers, averaging from 10
to 15 inches in length. It is fine sport for
the initiated, provided they don't fear wet feet
and loss of sleep. We used to enjoy it our
selves. but dou't relish the exposure now.

cese of Missouri, has received a call from the
Vestry of St. James Episcopal Church, Bed
ford. to become Rector of the Parish, and ha*
signified his acceptance of the same. Mr.
Pedelupe bas been preaching to the congre
gation for several week 3 with great accep
tance, and the call was unanimous.

in trade circles to day were rcutricied by the
i unfavorable condition of the weather.
No. 1 quercitron bark is steady at $27 par
i ton. but without sales.
There is a little more activity in clover
seed, bu' no change from Saturday s quota I
tions; sales ol 800 bags at s9a'J 87$. We
quote timothy at s6*6 25, and flax seed at
$2 20*2 25 per bushel.
There is a firm feeling in the flour market,
but the demand is not so active as at the
close of the week; sales of 700 barrels in lots,
including superfine, at $4 4(a4 76; extras at
$4 75a0; northwevtern extra fami y at $5 25 i
ao 74; Pennsylvania do. do. at $5
Indiana do. do. and Ohio do. do. at $0 25a
6 25; and fancy lots at $6 60a7 60. No
change in rye flour and corn meal; sales of
100 barrels of the former at $4 75.
The wheal market is dull, but the receipts :
and offerings are small. Prices are drooping. ;
