Splendor*, and Crimes of the City of Parig.—By James D. MeCabe. ! J r ■ National Publishing Co.. Philadelphia. j —The unasuel facilities posse-ved by our J first-class Subscription Hook Publishers base j enabled them to furnish the public with many ! works of great interest and value ; bat the i most powerful and aitractive work of this kind is the bonk now before us. It is simply the City of Paris photngrathed by the au thor's pen and the artist's pencil. It is mag nificently illustrated, and is issued in the very best style. It not only abounds in solid and useful information, but faithfully repro duces the most startling sensations of the gayest City in the world. It el!s us how the beauty and splendor of the bright City have been purchased at a frightful cost ot misery and suffering; how virtue and vice go arm in arm, and how the latter is undermining all the sweet courtesies of social life; and how most fearful crimes are committed and con cealed. It tells us of high life and low life : of palaces and hovels; of the Emperor's fami the workman's household. We min gle freely in tbe most magnificent and dia sipated pleasures, and drop an involuntary tear into ihe "Common ditcbea" where the poor sewing girl is laid to rest. All that has made Paris the most beautiful and attractive as well as the gayest and wickedest City in the world, unite to make this book the most interisting we have seen for many a day. The author, writing of whut he hus seen and ex- i periec.ced. has evidently sought to make hi* ; volume not onlv tbe most powerful and fas j cinating sensational work of the day, but also j a book which shall hold a place in every I man's library as an authority upou the sub- j ject whereof it treats. The book is magni- j ficently illustrated with 100 fine engravings, hy the leading artists of France: Dure, The- ' rotid, and others whose names amply attest ' the character of the work. It is comprised in j one large volume of over 800 pages, and Sold ] only by subi-cription. Ox Thursday afternoon last a young man named Snowden, from Bedford county, came to this city soliciting money to ralieve the distress of his family, they having lately been hurned out. \\ bile in the Allegheny House, on Main street, be presented hjp subscription paper to a man named Cuampenour, a cripple, who immediately began to abuse him. calling him a "d—d fraud"' and using other very abusive language. Snowden, not know ing Champenour was crippled, knocked him down. Champenour then drew a revolver and fired twice at Snowden, missing him. Snowden then attempted to escape, but wa attacked by about a dozen of Champenour's friends and knocked down. He finally sue ceeded in gelt ing away and was pursued down street by a shower of stones. Taking refuge in a tavern at Ibe lower end of the street, he remained for some time, and on going out again bad not proceeded far until he was again attacked and compelled to take refuge in flight. Ilis pursuers ran him into a store on Virginia street w hen the doors were locked and the police sent for who gave him the necessarry protection until he left the city. So far neither Champenour nor any of bis friends have been arrested. Upon the whole, this is rather rough treatment to a stranger. — Blair County Radical. AMONG THS INDIANS.— Lieut. Herndon tells us that no tribes of aboriginees are found in the deepest forests of South America, from the Andes to the Atlantic coast, that do not have and use Doct. Ayer's medicines and Lowell cottons. "Tremont,"' "Suffolk," "Boott," are seen stamped in large red and blue letters upon their garments, while Ayer's Pills a-d Cherry Pectoral are among the treasures of their habitations. The native soil furnishes tbein all their food and most ol their remedies, but they suffer from some sflLctiona which must have the interposition of higher skill.— Sentinel, Liberty , Vet. 1m CI.EAX VP. Now is the time to clean up. whether in town or country. Clear away old rubbish and gather it into a compost heap for your garden or farm, or burn it. If left to decay around jour bouse it will breed malaria and pr< duce fevers and sickness in your fami ly. Cleanliness not only adds to your re specralnli'y and improves the appearance of your property, but it also promotes health. See to it at ot.ee that no decaying matter ol any kind is peimiited to remain either in or ntound your premises, and you will never have cause to regret the precaution. GARDENING AND TREE PIABTISG is receiv ing special attention just now. We see quite a number of our citizens planting shade a nd ornamental trees about their premises. We hope those who have not yet begun will profit by tbe good example of their neigh hors. The planting of a shade tree is but little labor or expense, and not only beauti firs, but also adds greatly to the value of property. FISH.—An al-jndance of fine fish have been caught in the river within the past week. Parties have gone out in the evening nd returned after a few hours dipping with 40, 50 or 60 fine suckers, averaging from 10 to 15 inches in length. It is fine sport for the initiated, provided they don't fear wet feet and loss of sleep. We used to enjoy it our selves. but dou't relish the exposure now. SORE THROAT, Cnngh. Cold, and similar troubles, if suffered to progress, result in rerious pulmonary affections, oftentimes in curable. "Br men's Bronchial Troches" reach directly the seat of the disease, and give almost instant relief. They have been thoroughly tested, and maintain the good reputation they have justly acquired. As there are imitations, be sure to OBTAIN the genuine. TBE Rev. J. B. Pedelupe, iate of the Dio cese of Missouri, has received a call from the Vestry of St. James Episcopal Church, Bed ford. to become Rector of the Parish, and ha* signified his acceptance of the same. Mr. Pedelupe bas been preaching to the congre gation for several week 3 with great accep tance, and the call was unanimous. WHO WANTS A SEWING MACHINE?—We have a new $55,00 Grover and Baker sewing ruachine which we will dispose of on easy terms to any one who wants a eood machine: and who does not want a good sewing ma chine? ALSO a new Singer Sewing Machine for •'ale as eheap as can be sold in the com munity and on the het of terms. DULL.— Our old town bas been quite du!| the pa<t week. The fair weather has kept the farmers generally at home busied with their Spring work, which is quite backward on account of the lateness of the Spring. But little plowing has jet. been done and very lit tle if any oatt. sown, though much of our oata is ordinarily sown in March. To DAY .is Good Friday. The anniver sary of the crucifixion of Christ. It is kept as a fast day by a large portion of the Chris- Han world: more especially, hy the E iscopal. Church, Germ an Lutheran, parts of the German Reformed and particularly by tbe Roman Catholic. Fresb. pure air is a vitalizing elixir. Who ever is debarred hy circumstances fom un restricted access to this invisible, but power ful stimulant, needs a medicinal invigorantof some !• ind. The great object should be to choose the best. Popularity is a pretty good guarantee of merit in this scrutinizing and in telligent age, and tried by this criterion. Hos. teller's Stomach Bitters stands first among the invigorating and regulating medicines of the present day. To tne wants of persons en gaged in indoor employments, especially in crowded factories where even with the best possible ventilation the atmosphere is always in some degree polluted, this salubrious vegetable tonic is peculiarly adapted. Tbe nature of tbe ingredients is no mystery. It consists of an absolutely pure diffusive stimu lant, tinctured—or rather surcharged—with the fluid extracts of sauatous roots and barks and herbs. Tbe pharmucopneia has its tinctures, but what ate they? Tbe juice of otny a single root or bark or plant is present in each. Net one of them combines thetbree properties of a tonic, an alterative, and an aperient. All these elements are blended in the Bitters; nor are these the sum of its medicinal recommendations. It is also a blood depurent and an antispasmodic. The baleful effect which air that has been partially exhausted of its oxygen by frequent breathing produces on the vital organization, is notorious, and when this devitalized at mosphere is superadded the mephitie vapor of hot air furnaces, it becomes deleterious and depressing in the extreme. To enable the system to bear up. even tor a few hours each day against the debilitating influence of a vitiated atmosphere, a wholesome tonic and alterative is urgently required. This grand desideratum is supplied in Hosteller's Bitters, which as a strength-sustaining, health-pro tecting agent has no rival either among offic inal or advertised medicines. laprlm MAKKKTI. F DR - SCHENCK'B GREAT MEDICINES.— \Vill people neverleiira to know that a diseM?d liver and stomach neeee terlly disease the entire ejnern? The plainest rrioeiple of common sense teach this, and yet i there are hundred* ho ridicule the idea, and continue in the course which almost inevitably I blinds tbero prematurely t- the grave. Living as_ 'he majority of people do at complete variance with the laws of oatuie, it must be apparent to all, that sooner or later, nature will revenge her self. Hence we God that persons who indulge to e::cess in the use of very rich or indigestible food or intoxicating drinks, invariably pay a heavy penalty in (be end. The stomach becomes disor dered and refuses to act; the liver fails to perforin : its functions, dyspepsia and its attendant evils fdlow, and still the suffering individuals persist in cliogmg to the thoroughly exploded ideas of i the past. X)r. hCll ENCK'S medicines are recom I mended to all such. They bring snc and certain I relief wherever tbey are used as directed, end all ■ 'ha' is necessary to establish their reputation , with every ail.ng man or woman in the land is a j fair and impartial trial of thorn. Let those who j are skeptical on this point, and who have permit j ted 'nterested persons to prejudice them against j these n*w celebrated remedies fur Consumption, 1 discard their prejudices, and be governed by the principles of reason and common sense, if the system is disord*red depend upon it, in nine cases out of ten the seat uf the disorder will be fuuud in the ston ach and liver. To cleanse and invig orate the stomach and to stimulate the liver to j healthy aeon. use I t-CHBUCK'S MANIiRAKE PILLS.-Tbedai ly increasing demand for these oills is the be.-t : evidence of their value. Thousands upon thou I sands of boxes are sold daily. Why? Simply because tbey act prompt y and effi iently. In valids who may not find it convenient to call on Dr. SCHENCK in person are informed that full and complete directions for use eecompany each package of the MANDRAKE PILLS. PULMONIC SYRUP AND SEA-WEED TUNlC—These medicines wi;l cure consumption unless the lungs are sr far gone that the patient is entirely beyoud the reach of uiedical relief. It may be asked by those who are not familiar with the virtues of toese great remedies. '-How do lie oCJI BNUK'S medicines effect their wonder ful cures of consumption?" The answer is a simple one. Th'y begin their work of restoration by bringing tha stomach, liver < and bowels into an active healthy coudnion. it is food that cures this foimidabie disease. SCHENCK'S MANDRAKE PILLS act ou the liver and stomach, promoting healthy secretion, and removing the bile and slime which have re sulted from the inactive or torpid condition of these organs, and of the system generally. This sluggish slate ot the body, and the consequent ac cumulation of the unhealthy substances named prevent the proper digestion ot food, and, as a natural consequence creates disease, which results in prostration and finally in death. 8' HENCK s HLMONIC SYRUP A SEA IV KED TONIC, when taken regularly, mingle with the food, aid the dige.tire organs, make good rich blood, and as a natural consequence, give flesh and strength to the patient. Let the faculty I say what it may, this is the only true cure for j consumption. Experience has proved it beyond ! the shadow of a doubt, and thousands are to-day | alive and well who a few years since were regar ded as hopeless cases, but who were induced to j try Dr. SCBENCK'S remedies, and were restor- \ ed to permanent heaith by their use. One of the firs, steps the physician should take j with a consumptive patient is to invigorate the system. New how is this to be done? Certainly j not by giv ing medicines that exhaust and encr- j vate—medicines that impair instead uf imnrove j the functions of the digestive organs. Doctor i hCHE.V JK'S medicines cleanse the stomach and bowels (|| all subs'anc.s which are calculated to I irritate or weaken tl.cin. They ere tte an appe j tite—promote bealitful digestion—make good | blood, and. as a consequence, '.hey invigorate and strengthen the entire system, and more especially ; those parts which are disea.ed. It this ci nnot be d<. tie, then the case must be regarded as a hope- - less one. If the physician finds it impolitic to make a rATi KM FEEL ut.vcßY, if the diseased person cannot partake of good nouriz-hing food and prop erly digest it, it is uapowiblo that be can gain io flesh and strength: and it is equally impot-ttbie to bring a patient to this condi<ion so long a# the liver is burdened with diseased bile, and the fitoin:<ch laden with unhealthy slime. Almost tbe first request made to the physician by a consumptive patient is that he wilJ prescribe medicines that will remove or allay the euugb, night sweats a*d chills, which arc tbe sure atten dants on consumption. But this should not be done, as the Cough is only an effort of nature to relieve itself, and the night sweats and chills are caused by the diseaseu lungs. The remedies or dinarily prescribed do more harm than go d. They impair tbe functions of tbe stomach, im pede healthy digestion, and aggrrvate rather than cure tbe disease. There i, after all, nothing like facts with which to substantiate a position and it is upon facts that Dr. SCHKNCK relics. Nearly all who have ta ken bis medicine* in acco'dance with bis direction, have not on'V been cured of con.-umption, but from the fact that these medicines act with won derful power upon the digestive organs, patients thus cured speedily gaio flesh. Cleansing the *yitein of al. impurities, they lay the foundation for a solid, substantial structure. Restoring these organs to health, tbey create an appetite. The food is properly assimilated; the quantity of blood is not only increased, but is made rich and strong and in tbe face of such a condition o! the system all diseases must be banished. Full directions accompany each of the medi cii e, so that it is not absolutely necessary that patient# should ?ee Dr. Sc'HFNCK personally, unless tbey desire to bare their lungs examined. For'this purpose he is at his principal office. No. 15 North Sixth Sr., corner of Commerce, Phila delphia, every Saturday, from 9 a. m. until 1 p. m. Advice is given without charge, but for a thor ough examination with the Kespirometer the charge is SJ. Price of the Pulmonic Syrup and Seaweed Ton ic each, $1 JO per bottle, or $7-V0 a half don-n.
