NOVEMBER.
There is a northern army marching south
ward with power. The winds" are its scouts,
and Jack Frost is on the picket line. Its
skirmishers are in the forests of Maine : they
fill the Adirondack, and skirt the chain, of
great lakes. Some daring companies have
pushed far in advance of their reserves into
the praries and valleys of the West. Behind
them comes the grand army in its march to
the sea, leaving no green thing behind it.
save the cedars and piues with which it seems
to fraternize. But we have weapons and re
sources, which will enable us to sustain the
siege. Then, too, we Save one great ally
but for whose partial withdrawal, to at*eud to
business farther South, we should not expe
rience the present attack. This ally is the
Sun, who fights for us by day, but leaves us tc
take care of ourselves by night. Our resour
ces are wood and coal, and peat, good shelter
and the abundant corn. The first nippings of
the frost should have set us to finishing up
farm work, and making ready lor winter.
When we cast our eyes over the hints for No
vember given in previous years, we feel the |
need of ten times the space we have to make
suggestions upon every important subject, but
with so little space as we have we must be
somewhat general in our bints, hirst, how
ever a word about
Permanent Improvements. —'Multitudes of
farmers and their families are satisfied with
their present homes, but many others want to
move. They are looking West or Sorttb, aud
are ready to take a good offer and clear out.
The result of this is that they doinot half
take care of the farms they arc on, and if
they sell at all, they will not get half the price
they might: We say then, wherever you are,
make the surroundings as attractive as possi
ble. Make permanent improvements, good
buildings, good fences, walls, etc., lay under
drains, reclaim swamps, and in short, work
as if yon were going to live in one place all
your life, and your children after you. So
you will have the comfort, as you go along, of
seeiug everything improving, and such invest
ments are safe and usually pay a good inter
est, if not annually, they certainly increase
the value of the farm. But do not let any
work upon the farm nor the material welfare
of yourself and family lead to the neglect of
the moral and intellectual.
The Common School should have the solic
itous care and attention of every citizen, no
matter what his profession, or how light his
family responsibilities. Statistics bear us out
in saying that the poorest schools and the
least attention to education exist among the
most purely agricultural districts : and it is
also true that in more populous sections farm
ers, as a class are not the ones to forward
efforts for better and more thorough schools.
The great safe-guard cf our liberties is uni
versal intelligence. A good public school is
a security to any community against petty
thieving, stack burning, orchard robbing, and
a thousand other annoyances from bad boys
and bad men, which can hardly be overesti
mated. The contamination of one's children
by ignorance, which is almost always vicious
and the cause of poverty, should be provided
against by securing the very best school
houses and the best teachers for all the chil
dren of the community. This is every man's
and every woman's business, and a duty for
which an account mu3t be rendered as much
as for the heartless neglect of the hungry
gry and naked. It is not necessary at this
season to direct attention to
The Poor, for we Lave them always wtth us.
It is much pleasanter of a winter night to
think of those who have been and are warm
ed and fed by our unostentatious charities,
than of those to whom it may have been said
'"depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled (by
somebody else)." This month occurs the
usual season of Thanksgiving, which, former
ly observed by only a few of the older States,
has no w become a National festival. —May
this be among the many causes for thankful
ness of our readers and of ourselves, that as
God has prospered us, God'.- poor have sha
red his bounty at our hands. — American Ag
riculturist.
LET US MAKE GOOD WALKS.
The season is upon us when good hard
walks about our dwellings, barns and out;
houses generally, are very desirable on many
accounts—health, convenience and comfort
being among them. How many of our agrij
cultural readers neglect thishome duty ? How
m any allow the paths even to their houses to
be almost impassible in moist weather ? And
so with the paths to the barn, or different
stable doors, to the hog pens, cattle-yards,
&c. We have known persons to wade
through water mud and soft manure for eight
m onths in the year, to get at these several
places, at the expense of damp feet and nasty
boots, instead ofproviding a footway of stones
coal ashes or boards, either of which could
be made nt. small prnrnse and a few hours of
time in labor.
Especially is this neglect to be condemned
where the females of the family arethesuffi r
ers. We have many times seen the way to the
wood-pile coal-bin, spring-bouse, cbicKen
yard and other indispensable points, totally
unfit to be used by them. If any one thinks
there is any economy in this, he is greviously
mistaken. To say nothing as to the loss of
time in wading through the mud, the wcar
and-tear of shoe-leatlier and injnry to gar
ments would pay the entire expense of pro
viding good, dry walks , but when the ques
tion of health, of suffering and of doctors'
bills are taken into account, they ought to be
sufficient to drive every negligent, unsympa
thizing proprietor, whether in town or coun
try, to follow the suggestions herein made. A
man who will not look after the reasonable
need and comforts of his family, does not de
serve to have a family.— Cermantoxrn Tele
