CARRIER'S ADDRESS
TO THE PATRONS OF THE
BEDFORD INQUIRER.
KIXB PATRONS:
How often in the flight of time.
Have I attuned my harp to sing—
At least attempted to make rhyme,
And to your hearthstones comfort bring.
You know how in my simple way,
I, the poor Carrier Boy,
Have gotten up my homespun lay
To wish you, one and all, "much joy."
And here once more I shivering stand.
To meet and greet you as of yore.
Give each to me a friendly hand,
And thorough welcome to your door.
To cater in the year just passed
Unto your wishes I have tried,
And all unfaltering—ne'er downcast.
Have still my humble efforts plied.
You ask if I'm not growing old,
Why, bless you! not a whit,
Though I have journeyed years untold,
I'm young as ever yet.
This seems a funny thing indeed
But yet 'tis very true—
I'm like that famous traveler,
They call the Wandering Jew.
This ancient man has walked the earth.
At least some people say,
Since sun and moon were given birth,
And treads it yet to-day.
I've done the same each New-year's day,
Through chagrin and through joy—
Though age on age has rolled away
I'm still the "Carrier Boy.''
But many a dismal day, 1 ween,
Has passed beneath the sun-
Yea! years of horrid gloom I've seen
Since my journey I begun.
And many a grief has crossed my path—
Their fury on me spent,
Which like the tempest's awful wrath
Uprooted as they went.
The last four year's terrific strife,
When treason stalked the land,
When traitors sought the nation's life.
With ruthless—bloody hand,
I>id cause my soul to stand appalled,
My heart to freeze within—
Mind and spirit chafing—galled.
I wept at Manhood's sin.
But now sweet Peace has come again,
How sweetly she unfolds
Her burnished wings, exempt from stain,
To bless what she beholds.
Oh! how benign ! how beauteous she!
Look close and you'll descry,
Her sadness when you, lingering, see
The tear-drops in her eye.
The sword is sheathed—the Nation's free.
And ceased has clash of arms,
No more we marshalled forces see;
Nor hear war's "dread alarms"
O'er every foot of that behest
Our fathers to us gave,
From North to South, from East to West,
Doth Freedom's banner wave.
6 And now that God, by His decree,
Hath made the Right prevail,
That bondmen are unshackled—free,
And foes in terror quail
Let's bless His name—and not forget,
Our gratitude to show,
For mercies everywhere are met,—
Aye! wherever we do go.
With plenty has the year been crowned,l
Your garners are well stored
Where'er we turn doth thrift abound,
And dimes untold are poured
Into your laps—Oh ! sweetest joy!—
Alas! I stand aloof—
Oh! show your interest in the "Roy l '
And make the dimes the proof.
THE CARRIES.
A BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATION.
If one should give me a dish of sand and
tell me there were particles of iron in it, I
might look for them with my eyes, and
search for them with my clumsy fingers,
And be unable to detect them; hut let me
take a magnet and swdep through it, and
how would it draw to itself the most invisi
ble particles, by the mere power of attrac
tion. The unthankful heart, like my fingers
in the sand, discovers no mercies; but let
the thankful heart sweep through the day,
and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will
find, in everyjhour, some heavenly blessings;
only the iron in Cod's sand is gold.—

BRITISH PERIODICALS

London Quarterly Review (Conservative,)

Westminster Review (Radical).
North British Review (Free-Church).
AND
Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine (Tory)
The American Publishers continue to reprint the
above-named periodicals, but as the cost of printing
has doubled and the price of paper nearly trebled,
they are compelled to advance their terms as fol
lows :
per unuuui.
For any one of the Reviews $4.00
For any two of the Reviews 7.00 "
For any three of the Reviewß 10.00 "
For all four of the Reviews 12.00 "
For Blackwood's Magazine 4.00 "
For Blackwood and any one Review... 7.00 "
For Blackwood and two of the Reviews 10.00 "
For Blackwood and three of the Reviews 13.00 "
For Blackwood and the four Reviews.... 15.00 "
These works will be printed on a greatly un
proved quality of paper, and while nearly all A
merican Periodicals are either advanced in price or
reduced in size—and very generally both, we shall
continue to give faithful copies of all the matter
contained in the original editions.llcnce, our pres
ent prices will be found as cheap, for the amount
of matter furnished, as those of any of the com
peting periodicals in the country.
Compared with the cost of the original editions,
which at the present premium on gold would be
about $l6O a year, our prices ($l5) areexceeding
ly low. Add to this the fact that wo make onr an
nual payments to the British Publishers for early
sheets and copyright in Gold—sleosting ua at
this time nearly $2.50 in currency—and wo trust
that in the scale we have adopted we shall be enti
rely justified by our subscribers and the reading
pnblie.
The interest of these Periodicals to American
readers is rather increased than diminished by the
articles they contain on ourgreat Civil War, and
though sometimes tinged with prejudice they may
still, considering their great ability and the differ
ent stand-points from which they arewritten, he
read and studied with advantage by the people of
this country of every creed and party.
